Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been touted as a candidate to become part of Ruben Amorim’s backroom staff in a role that would see him help out with United’s current forward options such as Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund.

Danish international Hojlund has struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League this season, having only found the back of the net twice in 15 league matches so far this campaign.

All-time United record goalscorer Rooney would surely be able to offer some of his deadly striking-knowhow to the 21-year-old who could benefit from some advice from a former player who has scored over 200 goals in the Premier League.

Rooney, who recently left his role as head coach at Plymouth Argyle, has received the backing to provide the current crop of United forwards with the help that they need in front of goal by another United legend.

Treble-winning hero, Teddy Sheringham, has supported that notion that Rooney could help support Ruben Amorim’s quest to help his forwards score more goals.

When asked about Rooney’s potential ability as a striking coach, speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds, Sheringham said: “I think it is a very important role nowadays (striking coaches). There are set-piece coaches, back four coaches, striker coaches and Wayne's been one of the top players in the country.”

Sheringham also reckons that Rooney’s pedigree as a player could play an important role in the matter of helping out the current United number nine.

He added: “He's an experienced player that's played for his country a hundred times and scored goals at the top level. So any advice from him you would have to listen to.”

Hojlund has shown his ability in Europe on a consistent basis for United, currently finding himself joint-top of the Europa League scoring table for this season, as well as starting his time at Old Trafford strongly in last year’s Champions League campaign.

However, his goal scoring has been inconsistent in the league during his first two seasons in England and he may find his form domestically under the potential guidance of Rooney, who sits third on the list of all-time scorers in Premier League history.

It remains to be seen what Rooney’s next career move will be after leaving Plymouth but a coaching role at his former side, may be a way in which the 39-year-old can find his feet again after a turbulent period as a head coach.
