A new dawn is on the horizon for Gaelic football this weekend with the new playing rules set to come into force as the Allianz Leagues resume. Of course, there is also a full schedule of hurling fixtures, but they might well be overshadowed by the curiosity surrounding the football rules.

To add another level of intrigue, the fixture-makers have served up a plethora of mouth-watering top-flight fixtures to kickstart the new campaign.

First up is the meeting of Galway and Armagh on Saturday evening in what is a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland final.

Kieran McGeeney’s All-Ireland champions were promoted last term along with Ulster champions Donegal and will be keen to make a strong start to the new year.

Ulster rivals Tyrone, under new manager Malachy O’Rourke, will also be keen to make a strong start on Saturday when they host defending League champions Derry in Omagh.

The Oak Leafers are also under new management after Tyrone native Paddy Tally was confirmed as Mickey Harte’s successor back in November.

Donegal, meanwhile, get their campaign under way with a trip to Killarney to face Kerry on Sunday buoyed by the return of their 2012 All-Ireland winning captain Michael Murphy.

In Division Two, Tailteann Cup winners Down also have a tough opening fixture as they travel to Dr Hyde Park to face Roscommon on Sunday while neighbours Cavan and Monaghan clash at Kingspan Breffni on Saturday evening.

In Division Three, Fermanagh are also on the road as they face Kildare in Newbridge while Antrim begin their campaign with a home clash against Clare on Sunday.

The Saffrons will be hoping for a bright start in both codes as the Davy Fitzgerald era begins on Saturday night when they face Dublin in Croke Park in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League.
