Wellington AFC beaten by early goal and missed penalty against Barnstaple
Wellington AFC fell to a narrow defeat against Barnstaple in an eventful match.
Despite missing a penalty, the team put up a spirited fight against the promotion hopefuls at the Playing Field on Wednesday, January 22.
Manager Richard Cherry faced challenges as his squad was without injured goalkeeper Jake Viney and midfielder Sam Towler.
New goalkeeper Jack McAndrews made his debut, but an early goal was the difference between the two sides.
The Tangerines were caught out by a ball over the top just seven minutes into the game, allowing Barnstaple striker Tommy Rogers to score.
Wellington, who were otherwise strong defensively, maintained their resolve and dominated the rest of the first half.
Sully McKenna was denied by Barnstaple's goalkeeper Kane Gregory after being set up by Miles Quick, who also almost chipped Gregory just before the break.
At half-time, Cherry made two changes, with Glen Wright and debutant James De Selincourt replacing the injured Mark Cornish and McKenna.
The second half remained evenly matched until Wellington were given a lifeline with 15 minutes to go when striker Jake Quick was fouled, resulting in a penalty.
But the penalty by Quick’s brother, Miles, was saved by Gregory, who also blocked Jack Winsor's attempt with his legs.
This sparked a late rally by Wellington, but they couldn't secure the point their efforts deserved.
The Wellington squad included Jack McAndrews, Jordan Hayman, Tom Stone, Kieran Bailey, Mark Cornish, Sully McKenna, Sam Pashen, Jack Winsor, Josh Lukins, Miles Quick and Jake Quick
The aforementioned Glen Wright and James De Selincourt featured as substitutes, while Tom Hawkings and Wes Poulsom were not used.
