Wellington AFC suffer heavy defeat at home to Clevedon Town
Wellington AFC suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Clevedon Town.
The match on Saturday, March 1, marked the Tangerines' return to the pitch after four consecutive weather-related postponements since Saturday, January 25.
Despite the break, Wellington's performance did not meet expectations, with the final score favouring Clevedon, who were awarded three penalties during the match.
The first penalty came just 11 minutes in, when Alex Cherry was penalised for a push, allowing Alex Camm to score from the spot.
The second penalty, awarded at 33 minutes, was more controversial.
Jordan Hayman challenged for a ball in the box, and referee Matthew Uren deemed it a foul, leading to another penalty.
Camm scored again, doubling his tally and putting Wellington in a difficult position.
Early in the second half, Camm had the chance to complete his hat-trick from another penalty.
However, Wellington's goalkeeper, Jack McAndrews, made a brilliant save, denying Camm and keeping Wellington in the game.
Wellington's manager, Richard Cherry, made several substitutions, including the returns of defender Harry Scott and striker Phil Mendonca, in an effort to change the game's course.
However, despite a valiant effort, Wellington struggled to regain control.
Clevedon increased their lead after 65 minutes with another goal from Camm, this time from open play.
Wellington then felt they had a strong case for a penalty when Jack Winsor was fouled in the box, but the referee dismissed the appeal and sent off Sam Pashen instead.
Despite being down to ten men, Wellington fought hard but could not prevent Clevedon from scoring a fourth goal in stoppage time, courtesy of substitute Harrison Kyte.
Wellington's Jack Winsor was named man-of-the-match for his efforts, receiving the award from supporter Phil Conn, who sponsored the game.
Looking ahead, Wellington face another challenging match on Wednesday, March 5, when they host league leaders Portishead Town at the Playing Field at 7.45pm.
Portishead are aiming for back-to-back promotions and currently sit four points ahead of Clevedon, who are ten points clear of third-placed Brixham.
