Cardiff City, Swansea, Wrexham and Newport on brink of European football route in historic move
Plans to offer Wales' four English Football League clubs a route to European football via the Welsh League Cup are on the brink of being approved.
Under the proposals, known as Project Cymru, Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham and Newport County would all compete in a revamped competition alongside the 12 JD Cymru Premier clubs.
The winner would then go on to compete in the qualifying rounds of a UEFA competition, widely believed at this stage to be the Conference League.

The FAW says the quartet of clubs have agreed to a proposed revenue sharing model that it claims will benefit the whole of the game in Wales, and will help to bridge the disparity in funding for the grassroots game between Wales and England.
It's hoped the revamped Welsh League Cup could generate an additional £3million per season for the game across Wales, with the four clubs also agreeing to exclude any profit derived from representing Wales in Europe from financial regulations in the EFL or English Premier League.
The qualification of an EFL team could well help to improve Wales' co-efficient for European competitions, which is currently among the lowest in Europe.

The plan has been discussed with UEFA as well as the Secretary of State for Wales and the Welsh Government. It is now subject to a final decision by the Football Association.
Should it receive final approval, the FAW hopes to implement the new format from the start of next season.
FAW chief executive Noel Mooney said: “This will be a gamechanger for the development of the game as we work to unlock the full potential of Welsh football.
“It will unite Welsh football, improve the game at all levels, and deliver meaningful societal benefits across Wales making our clubs and communities more sustainable.
“It will generate significant additional revenue through a revamped Welsh League Cup competition with expanded participation of the four highest ranked Welsh clubs that participate in the English football pyramid.
“This will be distributed throughout the JD Cymru Premier, Genero Adran Premier (Wales’ top women’s league) and grassroots facilities across the country.

“It also represents the spirit of collaboration and cooperation among football associations across the United Kingdom ahead of the home nations’ joint co-hosting Euro 2028.”
Wrexham were the last Welsh EFL club to qualify for Europe through the domestic pathway – playing in the 1995-96 Cup Winners’ Cup, while Swansea played in the Europa League through the English system after winning the EFL Cup in 2013.
There's not yet been official confirmation, but it's believed that in agreeing to these plans, the four clubs will forego the right to qualify through the English pyramid again.
