Another feature in an occasional new series in which we catch up with the happenings of professional footballers from Warrington, focusing on David Brooks again...

DAVID Brooks gave Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola another reminder of his quality in the 5-1 FA Cup win over West Brom at the weekend.

The midfielder from Warrington, back in the side due to a host of injuries in the Cherries squad, set up three goals in a superb display.

The 27-year-old Welsh international, in his seventh season with Bournemouth, was named captain for the third-round clash.

“That was an easy decision,” said Iraola.

“It happened last season, also in a cup game, Swansea away. I’m very pleased with his performance, with the assists, but especially second half.

“We made him play a little bit deeper in the midfield to help us in the build-up and I think we improved on the ball because his decisions on the ball normally are very good.”

The former Birchwood Community High School student sent in an inviting cross for Justin Kluivert to cancel out Caleb Taylor’s opener for Albion, and also created Dango Ouattara’s second goal and Antoine Semenyo’s strike early in the second half.

The previous weekend, Brooks scored the winning goal for Bournemouth in their 1-0 success against Everton in the Premier League at the Vitality Stadium.

It helped The Cherries achieve a club-record eight games unbeaten in the top flight, placing them within three points of the Champions League places.

It is almost two years since Brooks made his return to football after receiving the all-clear from a cancer diagnosis.

He missed almost 18 months suffering from Hodgkin lymphoma, making his comeback in March 2023, but has failed to hold down a regular place in the team under successive managers.

Brooks spent a large chunk of last season on loan at Southampton, helping them to achieve promotion via the play-offs.

Head coach Andoni Iraola turned to Brooks over the Christmas period as injuries forced his hand and has stuck with him since.
