Cardiff have stepped up their search for a new signing after suffering another injury blow in their backline.

The Blue and Blacks are hopeful of bringing in some short-term cover after losing Harri Millard. The in-form wing, who can also play in the centre, suffered an MCL injury against Lyon in the Challenge Cup last weekend, leaving Matt Sherratt's resources out wide depleted.

The Arms Park side are already without wings Iwan Stephens, Mason Grady and Theo Cabango - with Millard's injury only serving to intensify the club's pursuit of a short-term option.

While Cabango is slowly nearing a return, Stephens is out for the season after suffering an ACL injury in training, while Grady is also looking at a couple of months on the sidelines - facing a race to be fit for the Six Nations.

Josh Adams recently returned from a lengthy spell out of the game while Tom Bowen impressed on his senior debut against the Cheetahs, but the Blue and Blacks are still on the lookout for another option to provide cover.

Finding that cover could prove tricky, though. Dewi Cross has been in fine form for Cardiff RFC in Super Rygbi Cymru, topping the try-scoring charts with nine touchdowns.

But Cardiff are likely to be in the market for someone training on a regular basis as opposed to just a couple of days a week, which could rule Cross out.

The injury comes as a blow for Millard, who has endured a tough time with his fitness over the years. The former Wales Sevens and U20s star only recently clocked up 50 appearances for the Arms Park side, having made his debut for the club in 2016.

He was released at the end of the 2022/23 season, but was brought back and has showed his talent when fit. The 28-year-old had been earmarked by Sherratt as a breakthrough player during his first stint at the club, only for injuries to hamper that.

This season however, he has showed what he can do - crossing for four tries in his six appearances.

"We're pretty bashed up in a couple of positions," said Sherratt after their Challenge Cup victory over the Cheetahs. "It always seems the way, that you get two or three in a couple of positions.

"Theo is long-term, Iwan is long-term. Harri Millard has done his MCL. We don't have an exact date on that.

"It's probably going to be a couple of months. We probably need a bit of cover around wing.

"We've got Gabe (Hamer-Webb), Josh Adams, Tom Bowen. We've got enough to get by. But we could do with strengthening that area."

18-year-old debutant Bowen has added to Cardiff's depth, with his try against the Cheetahs almost a carbon copy of Millard's last touchdown against the Dragons a couple of weeks ago.

But, having spoken to some players last week, Cardiff are hopeful they'll be able to bring in some reinforcements in the coming days.

"We're looking everywhere really," added Sherratt. "But you can easily panic and get someone in.

"But you need to get the right type of people and right type of player as well. Hopefully, over the next couple of days, we'll see if we can get someone in short term."
