Phil Foden insists Manchester City still have plenty to play for this season despite admitting their chances of claiming a fifth successive Premier League title had gone up in smoke.

Just a day after Liverpool head coach Arne Slot had said the Blues were still a threat in the title race, Foden said it was "done for sure" after his double at Brentford was cancelled out by two late Bees goals.

City could have taken two points out of Liverpool's lead if they had won at the Gtech Community Stadium, but leading 2-0 after 82 minutes, they shipped two late goals to extend their run to just four wins in their last 17 games in all competitions.

It felt like a missed opportunity to show Slot was correct in that the serial champions can go on winning runs and the manner of the collapse, with Yoanne Wissa and Christian Norgaard scoring the goals as Brentford slung balls into the box, exposed frailties within the City side.

After seeing two points slip away, Foden admitted the title had now gone, but said the challenge to get in the top four - City are currently sixth - and compete for the Champions League gave them plenty to play for still.

City's chances of qualifying for the last-16 of the Champions League automatically look to be over, and they need results against Paris St-Germain and Club Brugge to be sure of a play-off spot, but it's still giving Foden something to aim for.

"The title? Yeah, yeah, it's done for sure, it's done. We know. We’re not stupid," he said. "So we’ve got to aim for top four, that’s the next target now and then obviously Champions League as well. So it's not as if the season has gone.

"But we’ve got to be realistic, haven’t we? The performances have not been good enough to get up there. The top four is our aim now and then see where we can be in the other trophies."

City looked good going forward in west London, but in an entertaining and open game they struggled to control the match and Brentford threatened throughout.

Pep Guardiola's squad is stretched by injuries and players are playing more minutes than he would usually give them, with City operating a small squad, and Foden believes those problems have led to the issues they are facing this season, although he is reluctant to use it as an excuse.

"Possibly it’s both of them. We’ve not got the biggest squad but we can't really make excuses. We've been used to it now playing most competitions every year and we've not struggled in the past," he said.

"For whatever reason, we can't seem to control games and see games out at the moment and yeah, it's really frustrating when you're in a good position and you don't come out with the three points and having a lot of chances as well.

"It's something to work on. At least the performances are picking up. I believe we’re getting a little bit better now, so that's a positive to take from the game."
