How West Brom could line up under Tony Mowbray after Bilkul seal four transfers

West Bromwich Albion rather unconventionally wrapped up their transfer dealings a whole 14 and a half hours after the Sky Sports transfer deadline clock ticked past 11pm. There haven't been many scenarios previously when Albion supporters have been told to go to bed on deadline night on tenterhooks and been left to wait for clarity on the club's unresolved business while consuming their breakfast - and then their lunch.

Adam Armstrong is an eye catching addition; a player who knows what the Championship demands of a goalscoring centre forward, a player who knows all about the workings of manager Tony Mowbray and a player who in comparison to the other three exciting additions to the Baggies squad in this winter window, who turns 28 this month and appears to be very much in his prime.

Armstrong doesn't need much of an introduction. He has produced 110 goal contributions in 232 Championship appearances, which is a pretty lethal return by anyone's measurement and is a highly exciting addition to what the existing attacking department which already dwells at Albion's Walsall training ground but is in need of more conviction when it matters.

Albion have also added Isaac Price and Tammer Bany, both 21 and both from abroad. Like many well run clubs, they have taken a prudent stance when approaching recruitment, thinking as much of the future as they are of the present. In the cases of Price, Bany, Armstrong and Will Lankshear, they've ticked the boxes of both.

The remaining piece of the jigsaw - it was made clear that Albion were satisfied with their centre half options after sanctioning Caleb Taylor's return to Wycombe without feeling compelled to replace him - was unforeseen. It came in goal. News broke on Monday afternoon that Albion had struck an agreement with Ipswich for Alex Palmer. That spelled bad news for the unassuming Bristol Rovers, who'd lose Josh Griffiths upon his recall.

Suddenly, Albion's squad under Bilkul - who are approaching their one-year anniversary after bringing to an end the dark period under predecessor Guochuan Lai, during which time they've reintroduced the concept of hope in what might be achievable - has rather dramatically reduced in collective age and, with the process in its infancy, is likely to continue doing so.

As for the here and now, Albion have matches to win and players to integrate. It's a squad full of good characters which Bilkul have helped to assemble and which Mowbray has inherited, each of whom will be boosted with each new face which has passed through the doors - and for some they'll know the pressure is now very much on if they're to retain their existing supply of first-team minutes.

Sheffield Wednesday arrive on Saturday. It's an intriguing thought that Albion could make three or four changes to the side which lost at Plymouth - indeed for many supporters that would've been a necessity even without the new signings - and promisingly, the likes of Armstrong needn't require too much time when attempting to make an immediate impact. Just as well, as Albion wait for Josh Maja and Daryl Dike to return.

In the back-line, Mason Holgate has turned in a couple of decent performances more recently after a series of struggling displays and, especially with the less experienced Griffiths returning, Mowbray could be tempted to return to vice captain and fit again Kyle Bartley. Further afield, one of Jason Molumby or Ousmane Diakite - perhaps likelier the former - should be returning to the starting XI.

The front-line is fascinating. Bany may require some time to get up to speed with English football but Armstrong looks to be a shoo-in to be granted a first start in Albion's first match after the transfer window, during which they'll be eager to consign the grim afternoon at Plymouth firmly to recent history.
