Chris Brunt says the plan is for him to continue as interim West Brom manager until told otherwise after what he predicted to have been a “big week” in the search for Carlos Corberan’s successor.

Brunt has overseen first team affairs since the Spaniard’s departure on Christmas Eve.

During that time they have beaten Preston at home, lost at Derby and drawn away to Sheffield United and Swansea albeit the latter was a cruel late leveller.

Asked the latest on the new manager search, he said: “I’d imagine this week has been a big week for them with no games so obviously there has been a few days to hold meetings or Zooms or whatever way they do it. I am not sure on the whole process of it.

“They’ve been able to take a couple of weeks. They haven’t had to go straight off the bat and make a decision which has probably helped them. They’ve been able to take their time and do things properly which I am sure they’ll do. Until I am told otherwise I’ll be here but based on the media stuff I would imagine there’s a possibility.”

If it his last game this weekend against Bournemouth, he reflected: “It’s been different. Obviously a lot different to the job I have been doing. I have been doing a bit of coaching with the 21s in the past but it’s a lot more full on. There’s a lot of stuff going on. Under 21s is development football and you are trying to get players developed. It’s back into the real world of trying to win games as well. Once the lads (first team) go across the line on a Saturday you are hoping they bring back some sort of a result. You can affect it as a player. You can say stuff on the touch line and before the game but when people are out there you have just got to trust them to do their jobs.

“To be fair to them the lads have been great. They have been good with me as well. I am pretty inexperienced with all this. I still know some of them from playing with them. You have got that natural respect and you can have a craic with them. I think that’s probably helped as well. It can be a difficult time for players.

"I think we have made it as enjoyable as we could. We got a couple of decent results so I think on the whole it has been ok. I think it’s probably worked quite well for everybody. Hopefully we have set up a good platform for the new man to come in. It is what it is. We have tried to cope with it as best we can and I think the lads have appreciated that.”
