West Ham have confirmed the appointment of David Moyes as the club’s new manager.

The Hammers have acted swiftly to replace the outgoing Slaven Bilic after the Croatian was sacked by the east Londoners yesterday.

Former Manchester United boss Moyes is a free agent having resigned from his post at Sunderland in May following their relegation to the Championship.

West Ham are hoping the experienced Scot doesn’t suffer the same fate this term and have tasked the 54-year-old with hauling them out of the Premier League drop zone.

He has signed a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The club’s joint-chairman, David Sullivan, said: “I would like to welcome David to West Ham United.

“This is a unique position for David Gold and myself – it is the first time in almost eight years at West Ham United that we have appointed a new manager during the season.

“We need somebody with experience, knowledge of the Premier League and the players in it, and we believe David is the right man to turn things around and get the best out of the players at the Club. He is highly regarded and respected within the game, and will bring fresh ideas, organisation and enthusiasm.

“He proved with Everton that he has great qualities and we feel that West Ham United is a Club that will give David the platform to display those qualities again.”

Moyes’ first game in charge will be at Watford’s Vicarage Road in the Premier League on 19 November following the conclusion of the international break.

West Ham are currently down in 18th position in the Premier League table after a dreadful start that saw them lose their opening three matches while only recording two wins so far in 2017-18.

Moyes added: “I’m really looking forward to meeting the supporters, being in the stadium with them. I’m looking forward to them getting right behind the team and my team also.

“We need their support, we need everybody with us.”
