West Ham complete Kalvin Phillips loan deal after Man City nightmare

Kalvin Phillips has joined West Ham on loan until the end of the season, bringing an end to the midfielder’s Manchester City nightmare.

The agreement will see the Hammers cover Phillips’s wages, believed to be around £140,000-per-week, for the remainder of the campaign.

It was initially expected that an option-to-buy in the summer would be included in the deal but that has been shelved after the clubs failed to agree terms, though a permanent transfer at the end of the loan has not been ruled out.

Phillips has been a long-term target for David Moyes, who failed with a £50million bid for the player in January 2022, six months before he left boyhood club Leeds to join City.

The 28-year-old struggled to make a significant breakthrough under Pep Guardiola, however, with his first season in Manchester dogged by injury.

Phillips was heavily linked with a move away last summer, but decided to stay at the Etihad Stadium in order to fight for his place.

The situation had not improved, though, with the England international yet to start a Premier League match this season and he was left with little choice but to leave on loan this month as he looks to secure his place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.

Phillips completed his medical at Rush Green on Thursday and will be eligible to face Bournemouth when the Hammers return to Premier League action next week.

He will wear the No11 shirt vacated last summer, when Lucas Paqueta switched to No10.

“I’m really pleased to be here,” the Yorkshireman told the club website.

“There’s always been a lot of speculation about me moving to West Ham, so I’m really excited to get going now.

“There’s so much to look forward to in the second half of the season for the Club and I can’t wait to be part of it.

“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season."
