West Ham: Kalvin Phillips can replicate Jesse Lingard's huge impact on loan, says David Moyes
David Moyes has backed Kalvin Phillips to replicate Jesse Lingard’s impact as he starts his loan spell at West Ham with “something to prove”.
Phillips joined the Hammers on loan from Manchester City earlier this month and could make his debut when Bournemouth visit the London Stadium in the Premier League on Thursday night.
The England international is looking to get his career back on track after a troubled 18-month period at the Etihad, where he started only three Premier League games under Pep Guardiola and was dogged by a number of injuries.
Three years ago, Lingard arrived in east London in similar circumstances having fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United and enjoyed a superb six-month stint in which he scored nine goals in 16 League matches to help fire the Irons into Europe.
“[Phillips’] pedigree over the years has made me feel he's a player I'd like to have at the club,” said Moyes, who failed with a £50million bid for the then Leeds midfielder in January 2022.
“For five or six years, he's been a mainstay of the England national team. He's someone who has been a really good player. His time at City hasn't worked as well as he would have liked.
“This time a couple of years ago we got Jesse Lingard, he really helped us. I'm hoping Kalvin can have a similar impact as what Jesse had.”
West Ham monitored Phillips’s situation last summer but the player decided to stay at City in order to fight for his place under Pep Guardiola.
However, he has again struggled for game time this term and was left with little choice but to find a new club this month or else risk losing his place in Gareth Southgate’s plans for Euro 2024.
“We're talking about a boy with really good character,” Moyes added. "I heard Pep Guardiola's comments about him and I would agree with those, having had him here for a week now.
"We want to see his footballing ability now. I think he's got a chance now to get himself back on track. We've brought in another England international to our squad and that's a big plus.
“Everybody has something to prove. Jesse had something to prove and Kalvin has as well. There is a big European competition at the end of the season where he'll be hoping to be in good form.”
