West Ham player ratings vs Crystal Palace: Konstantinos Mavropanos sees red but Lucas Paqueta unfortunate
West Ham lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace at the London Stadium in a match that saw Konstantinos Mavropanos sent off.
The Eagles took the lead after the break when Jean-Philippe Mateta fired in.
Mavropanos earned a second yellow card on 80 minutes for a high-foot offence against the goalscorer, before Eddie Nketiah won a penalty late on which Mateta scored.
It leaves Graham Potter with one win and two defeats from his first three matches as the Hammers’ new manager.
Dom Smith was at the London Stadium to rate the West Ham players’ performances...
Lukasz Fabianski 4
Saved from Mateta in the first half but couldn’t get near to his thunderous strike after the break. Smothered Eddie Nketiah when the striker tried to go round the Pole. Gave away a penalty by bringing Nketiah down. Mateta scored (just).
Konstantinos Mavropanos 3
Got himself booked for fouling Mateta. Then a high boot on Mateta saw the Greek sent off. Potter needs Jean-Clair Todibo back sooner rather than later.
Max Kilman 4
Backed off Mateta so much that it allowed the Frenchman to hammer home the opener. Gave the ball away in the lead-up to Palace winning their late penalty.
Aaron Cresswell 5
Fumbled a shot in the first half on a rare outing from the start. Hooked as part of a triple substitution on 56 minutes.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6
Ran the right wing well, tracking back to defend and combining with Mohammed Kudus further forward.
Edson Alvarez 5
Booked for tripping Will Hughes to stop a Palace counter-attack. Missed a chance from range late on.
Guido Rodriguez 4
Played some sloppy passes which didn’t find their man. Not as effective as against Fulham on Tuesday.
Emerson 5
Did okay at left wing-back for the 56 minutes he was on before being replaced by Lewis Orford.
Tomas Soucek 5
Lively and energetic, always trying to put his toe in. But far from his best display.
Mohammed Kudus 6
Sought to make things happen, dropping his shoulder and going past people. Never had the chance to show off any end product.
Unfortunate to be substituted when he was (after just 56 minutes), because he worked very hard off the ball.
Subs:
Danny Ings (Paqueta, 56’) 4
Played the ball into traffic and could have held onto it better.
Ollie Scarles (Cresswell, 56’) 5
Played as a left-back, with Graham Potter switching systems for the final 34 minutes.
Lewis Orford (Emerson, 56’) 6
Acquitted himself well in central midfield on his first-team debut.
Luis Guilherme (Alvarez, 83’) N/A
Not used: Areola, Soler, Coufal, Irving, Casey
