West Ham player ratings vs Manchester City: Guido Rodriguez a shrewd signing but Michail Antonio struggles
West Ham suffered defeat to Manchester City at the London Stadium as they were beaten 3-1 by the visitors.
City led inside 10 minutes when Bernardo Silva slipped Erling Haaland in to roll home.
But West Ham were back level soon after when Jarrod Bowen forced an own goal from Ruben Dias.
However, further excellent finishes by Haaland either side of the break made sure of a 3-1 victory that left West Ham on three points after three league games of the season.
Dom Smith was at the London Stadium to rate the West Ham players’ performances…
Alphonse Areola 6
Sprang off his feet to claw away Kevin De Bruyne’s goal-bound effort in the first half. Replaced at half-time, possibly due to an injury.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6
Struggled a little to keep De Bruyne and Jack Grealish quiet down his flank, but put in a few important tackles and made a decent fist of his first league start for the Hammers.
Konstantinos Mavropanos 6
Marshalled the defence well, mostly, but still allowed Haaland to leave with a brace.
Max Kilman 5
Turned too easily by Rico Lewis in the first half but distributed the ball well from the back. Book for a needless trip on Jeremy Doku.
Emerson 6
Like Kilman, given a yellow for fouling Doku. Other than that, was successful in limiting the Belgian winger to very little. But his poor pass led to City’s opener.
Controlled and composed on the ball. Looks sure to prove a shrewd signing. Booked for a trip where he knew exactly what he was doing.
Edson Alvarez 6
Brought into the line-up as Tomas Soucek was dropped. A steady performance without ever setting the world alight. Subbed with 15 minutes to play.
Mohammed Kudus 7
So good in tight spaces. Came so close to scoring a glorious goal when he tapped past De Bruyne, held off Doku, and played a one-two with Bowen on the break before slamming against the post.
Lucas Paqueta 6
Offered himself as a passing option at every opportunity but has enjoyed more impactful games than this, against the side who explored signing him last summer. Failing to control the ball proved costly as City nipped in and netted the opener.
Jarrod Bowen 6
Plenty of chances to run at City - and did - but the closest the skipper came to scoring proved his parried effort from distance inside the first 10 minutes.
Often exposed up front, as was always likely. Didn’t have any chances to score.
Subs: Lukasz Fabianski (Coufal, 46’) 5
Could do nothing about the third goal and did make one smart stop to deny Haaland a fourth.
Vladimir Coufal (Emerson, 71’) 5
Barely in the game after coming on.
Niclas Fullkrug (Antonio, 71’) 5
Tried to assist Tomas Soucek with a nice lay-off.
Tomas Soucek (Alvarez, 77’) N/A
Crysencio Summerville (Bowen, 86’) N/A
Not used: Guilherme, Todibo, Irving, Casey
