Jurgen Klopp's long Liverpool farewell is in danger of turning sour after a touchline row with Mohamed Salah during a 2-2 draw at West Ham which hammered another dent into their fading title hopes.

Salah, surprisingly left out of the starting line-up, was summoned from the bench by Klopp in the 79th minute after Michail Antonio equalised for West Ham. The Egypt striker had a heated exchange with his manager with fellow substitute Darwin Nunez eventually stepping in to placate his team-mate.

It was an ugly end to another poor display from Liverpool, who could have at least temporarily moved level with leaders Arsenal with a victory. They had come from a goal down, - a Jarrod Bowen header - to lead 2-1 thanks to Andy Robertson's snap-shot and a comical West Ham own goal. But Antonio's header meant two more dropped points and Klopp's final season in charge still fizzling out.

The Liverpool boss said: “David is one of the best colleagues. We don't have time really to spend together but we spoke actually over the years a lot before games or whatever. I like him a lot, respect him a lot.

“I think he is doing an incredible job, to be honest. I like the team they have, offensively really talented, good transfers.

David Moyes has been keen to emphasise the success his second tenure at West Ham has been in the build-up to this match.

Van Dijk backs Slot appointment

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has approved the club's push to appoint Arne Slot as manager.

Slot led Feyenoord to victory in the Dutch Cup on Sunday and won the Eredivisie title last season. He also reached the 2022 Europa Conference League Final.

With a compensation deal now agreed, Slot is in talks with Liverpool over finalising a contract, and he is expected to take charge at the end of the season.

Speaking earlier this week, Van Dijk said: "I think Slot is one of the better Dutch coaches at the moment. With the way he plays and the philosophy he has, he can be a Liverpool coach.”

Klopp: Slot sounds good to me

Jurgen Klopp would be “more than happy” if Arne Slot was confirmed as his successor at Liverpool.

The Feyenoord boss has confirmed that he wants to take charge at Anfield, and it is believed that the two clubs have now agreed a compensation package.

Asked about Slot’s expected arrival in the summer, Klopp offered a positive assessment of the Dutchman’s credentials.

“What I like a lot about him, if he is the one, is that he wants to take the job,” Klopp said. “He’s desperate, let’s go for it, excited.

“I like the way his team plays football. All the things I hear about him as a guy, good guy. Some people I know know him, I don’t know him yet. Some people tell me he is a really good guy. I like that a lot.

“Good coach, good guy... if he is the solution or the man, I am more than happy. It’s not up to me, but that all sounds really good to me.”

Moyes not thinking about West Ham future

David Moyes has no interest in who might be replacing him as West Ham manager - as he confirmed talks over his future are on hold.

Moyes’s contract as West Ham manager expires this summer, and he is expected to depart after four and a half years in charge.

The club are understood to be considering successors, having held meetings this week with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, as well as former Wolves and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui.

Moyes maintains his future will not be decided until the summer and said: “I've not had any communication at all. That is because we've already decided amongst ourselves that we would talk at the end of the season.

“There is a lot of speculation around, I understand that. But we need to get things right.”

Quizzed on his thoughts on the names linked with replacing him, Moyes said: “I have to be honest, I haven't looked. I'm only getting told by people like you, or maybe people have phoned me up.

“But I haven't gone out looking. As far as I'm concerned, we had an agreement we would speak at the end of the season.”

Gakpo missed the defeat to Everton due to birth of his first child, but Klopp confirmed at his press conference on Friday that the Dutchman is now back in training.

With Nunez and Salah both wasteful in front of goal once against against Everton, Gakpo could come back into the starting lineup.

Jota is injured but should return before the end of the season, while Conor Bradley remains on the sidelines.

Nayef Aguerd will miss the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side due to a foot injury, however, while Konstantinos Mavropanos faces a race to be fit.

“Jarrod Bowen is back training, so there’s a good chance that Jarrod will be available,” David Moyes said on Friday.

“We’ll still need to monitor him right up [to the game] just to see how he is, but hopefully Jarrod is back and fit.
