West Ham vs Manchester City LIVE!

Man City battled back from two goals down and missed a late penalty to keep the title race alive after a rip-roaring 2-2 draw at West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen’s first-half double threatened to hand the initiative to second-placed Liverpool, who would have relished the challenge of drawing level on points and gnawing away at the goal difference at Southampton on Tuesday night.

But Jack Grealish pulled one back after the break and an own goal by Vladimir Coufal hauled City level to at least keep their title destiny in their hands.

Pep Guardiola’s side were then awarded a spot-kick which, had they scored it, would have left them needing just a point against Aston Villa next weekend to retain the Premier League crown.

But Lukasz Fabianski saved Riyad Mahrez’s effort to ensure City likely still have work to do if they are to lift the title.

Another memorable afternoon to see Noble off

18:17 , Matt Verri

Little sums up the evolution of English football across the course of Mark Noble’s 18-year career like the rise of Manchester City, but on his final home appearance, West Ham used the visit of the champions to not only offer a fitting send-off but once again display how far they have come themselves of late.

Jarrod Bowen’s first-half double was ultimately cancelled out by second-half efforts from the boot of Jack Grealish and the head of the unlucky Vladimir Coufal, but Lukasz Fabianski’s penalty save from Riyad Mahrez has delayed City’s coronation and means that the Premier League’s current top four have all dropped points at the London Stadium this term.

City are the first to have left with any and while European commitments and a thin squad mean West Ham’s hopes of breaking into the top four themselves faded long ago, in one-off matches, this is a team that has consistently risen to David Moyes’ pre-season challenge to compete with the best.

West Ham would have moved up to sixth with victory this afternoon.

As it is, they remain in seventh - two points behind Manchester United, though Moyes’ side have a much better goal difference.

The Hammers need to beat Brighton on the final day and hope United don’t pick up three points against Crystal Palace.

Player ratings

16:31 , Matt Verri

Manuel Lanzini 6

Relatively quiet afternoon for the Argentine before being replaced for Noble’s farewell.

Jarrod Bowen 9

Took his 11th Premier League goal of the season brilliantly from a tight angle after rounding Ederson, then scored 12th with another smart finish. Booked for cynical foul on Jack Grealish, who will surely soon be an England teammate.

Michail Antonio 7

Gave Fernandinho major problems whenever given the chance to run into space and set up Bowen’s second but wasted brilliant chance to score third himself.

Emotional goodbye

Message to the England boss...

16:12 , Matt Verri

16:06 , Matt Verri

So then, Man City have a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

They’ve played a game more than Liverpool, who can close the gap to just a single point heading into the final day of the season if they beat Southampton on Tuesday.

If the Reds draw, they’ll need a seven-goal swing on the final day. If Southampton win, Man City win the title.

Got it? Good.

What could have been for City...

15:59 , Matt Verri

FT: West Ham 2-2 Man City

15:53 , Matt Verri

It finishes level at the London Stadium!

City will feel it should have been three points, after that late Mahrez penalty, but they will reflect on that being a crucial point.

If Liverpool lose against Southampton in midweek, the Premier League will be City’s.

15:50 , Matt Verri

90+3 mins: Antonio down again, Antonio told to get up again.

It’s fair to see he and Anthony Taylor have not got on very well at all this afternoon.

15:47 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Four minutes added on.

Who knows what happens from here! City will be happy with the point you feel.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

15:43 , Matt Verri

Well, then. How big a moment could that prove in the Premier League title race? Lukasz Fabianski may never buy a pint on Merseyside again in his life (granted, he probably isn’t there often).

SAVED!

15:43 , Matt Verri

FABIANSKI SAVES IT!

Mahrez strolled up to the spot, went to Fabianski’s left and the goalkeeper read it. Superb.

PENALTY MAN CITY!

15:42 , Matt Verri

IT’S GIVEN!

Dawson penalised and City have a massive chance to complete the comeback. It will be Mahrez to take.

15:41 , Matt Verri

This is an absolutely huge moment.

Referee over to look at the pitchside monitor. This could well be given.

15:40 , Matt Verri

83 mins: City screaming for a penalty... not given.

Jesus had the beating of Dawson, pokes it past him in the box and then went down. Referee waves away the appeals but that will certainly be checked.

15:37 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Noble playing quite far forward for the Hammers, ahead of Soucek and Rice.

Grealish continues to look really dangerous for City - got to feel that if there’s a winner for them, it comes down the left.

15:34 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Here we go - Noble coming on for West Ham!

Huge ovation as he replaces Lanzini, and Rice hands over the armband.

15:32 , Matt Verri

75 mins: NEARLY A HAT-TRICK!

This match has been absolutely crazy. Cross into the box, Soucek nods it down for Bowen and it’s perfectly into his own path.

Smashes it at goal, blocked though and flies behind for a corner. Nothing comes of that.

15:29 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Fabianski parries Cancelo’s cross away, but it’s coming straight back. West Ham pinned right back.

Long, long 20 minutes ahead for them now.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

15:27 , Matt Verri

West Ham have had chances to get that two-goal cushion back, with Bowen and Antonio both shooting when they should have squared. Now they’ve been punished - or rather punished themselves.

GOAL! West Ham 2-2 Man City | Vladimír Coufal OG 69'

15:26 , Matt Verri

CITY ARE LEVEL!

West Ham made to regret those missed chances on the break.

Mahrez curls the free-kick in, Coufal dives at it and just flicks it on into the far corner. Fabianski no chance.

15:25 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Optimistic! Zinchenko goes for goal from absolutely miles out. Gets all the way through to Fabianski and the West Ham goalkeeper pushes it away to safety.

Midway through the second-half and it’s right in the balance. Laporte wins a free-kick for City in a dangerous position.

15:23 , Matt Verri

66 mins: It’s going to become increasingly end-to-end as City throw everything at West Ham.

Hosts have to be more clinical on the break though - the space is there for them.

15:22 , Matt Verri

64 mins: City regaining control after that brief bit of excitement.

Here we go though - Rice trying his best to drag West Ham up the pitch when they win it back and he does so.

Fernandinho back pass under pressure from Rice is straight to Antonio. Clean through, lobs Ederson but it’s well over! Massive moment.

15:18 , Matt Verri

61 mins: HUGE CHANCE FOR WEST HAM!

Wow. Ball through the middle, Ederson comes flying out but Laporte plays it wide instead under pressure.

Zinchenko refuses to just clear it and instead passes it straight to Bowen. He gets to the byline, has plenty up in support but goes for goal from a really tight angle. Into the side netting.

15:17 , Matt Verri

60 mins: De Bruyne will step up and take the free-kick himself.

Over the wall... over the bar. Fairly comfortably too. Not the Belgian’s best effort, that is for sure.

Fabianski now into the book for time-wasting - he’s gone very early!

15:16 , Matt Verri

59 mins: City want a red card for Coufal, as he pulls down De Bruyne who had made a dangerous run.

It will just be a yellow for the full-back though. Fact the pass had plenty of pace on probably saved him, wasn’t certain that De Bruyne was through on goal.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

15:15 , Matt Verri

I think many West Ham fans will have seen this as a bit of a free-hit ahead of kick-off but now they’ve seen their team go ahead and then have the deficit halved, there’s a bit of tension creeping in.

15:13 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Antonio gets a knock and needs some treatment, which gives West Ham the chance to regroup.

Back underway again and the pressure is just relentless. Hosts cannot get out at all. Deep cross swung in, Grealish keeps it in at the back post and plays the ball back to Bernardo... another save from Fabianski! Zouma finishes the job by hacking it away.

15:10 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Big save! West Ham hanging on for dear life.

Jesus played in behind, Rice forces him wide into the box but he still goes for goal from a tight angle. Fabianski uses his feet to turn it behind for a corner.

Hammers deal with it well again.

15:09 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Feels like much of Guardiola’s team talk may have been aimed at Grealish - he’s started this half brilliantly.

De Bruyne clips a dangerous cross into the back post, Grealish can’t quite get up enough though and he flicks the header wide. This is so much better from City.

15:07 , Matt Verri

50 mins: City flying now.

They get in behind, cross cut back into the box... rolls across the face of goal. All the way through to Grealish who sees his fierce strike blocked.

GOAL! West Ham 2-1 Man City | Jack Grealish 49'

15:06 , Matt Verri

THERE’S ONE BACK!

Game. On. Corner swung in, cleared out to the edge of the box. Again the cross is cleared, comes out to Grealish and he hammers a volley into the ground and it flicks off Dawson into the back of the net.

15:04 , Matt Verri

47 mins: The pattern of this half is already set. City having all of the ball, West Ham sitting in deep.

Up to the visitors to break them down. It won’t be easy, that’s for sure.

Back underway!

15:02 , Matt Verri

Here we go - huge 45 minutes ahead.

14:59 , Matt Verri

City had 13 shots in that first-half... just two on target.

They were shooting from distance, sending hopeful crosses into the box - not at all like them.

Big team talk needed from Guardiola to get his side going again.

Make it a double

14:57 , Matt Verri

How it started...

14:51 , Matt Verri

HT: West Ham 2-0 Manchester City

14:48 , Matt Verri

WOW.

For the first 20 minutes or so, West Ham barely had a kick.

But two brilliant runs from Bowen in behind and two composes finishes see the Hammers 2-0 up at the break!

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:47 , Matt Verri

Rinse and repeat. Bowen’s run perfectly timed and a makeshift City backline are out-of-sync - Zinchenko keeping him onside this time. The Hammers are in dreamland - and so are Liverpool.

GOAL! West Ham 2-0 Man City | Jarrod Bowen 45'

14:46 , Matt Verri

INCREDIBLE!

Two chances for Bowen, two goals! Sensational from the West Ham winger and City have massive problems.

Soucek flicks a long ball on for Antonio, he lifts it over the top and Bowen is in again. Takes his time and then drills it low past Ederson.

14:45 , Matt Verri

45 mins: Grealish skips away from Coufal, gets tripped and it’s a free-kick in a great position for City.

De Bruyne fires it in, there’s no touch at the near post and Fabianski is grateful to see it fly into his arms.

14:43 , Matt Verri

43 mins: Antonio’s record of winning free-kicks when throwing himself to the ground this afternoon moves to 1/8. Again the referee waves away his appeals.

West Ham striker had done well to skip away from a couple of challenges, before putting a poor cross into the box. Came back to him, tried to win the free-kick. Not happening.

14:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Zinchenko has probably been one of City’s best players - he fizzes a brilliant pass forward. West Ham get back well though.

Lanzini then gets a nudge in the back and wins a cheap free-kick. Just what the Hammers want.

14:37 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Defending is become increasingly desperate from West Ham.

Jesus with lovely footwork in the box, onto his right foot this time... wonderful block from Zouma. Mahrez goes for goal from the rebound, deflected and comfortably rolls through to Fabianski.

14:36 , Matt Verri

36 mins: JUST WIDE!

Fabianski barely moved a muscle. Zinchenko drives into space and finds Jesus. The Brazilian works it onto his left foot and fires at goal... inches wide of the far post. Really decent chance.

14:34 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Better from City, as Cancelo pokes the ball through to De Bruyne.

He cuts it back perfectly into the path of Rodri... heavy touch though and West Ham can clear it behind for a corner.

That’s flicked away too - Hammers dealing with set-pieces very well.

14:32 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Antonio knocks it past Fernandinho, gets brought down and that will be a free-kick.

Nothing comes of it though, City can counter. That is until Bowen hacks him down very cynically. Yellow card.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:30 , Matt Verri

Suddenly, City look a bit ragged. Neither Fernandinho nor Laporte look comfortable running back towards their own goal and their City teammates can see it too - you could sense the urgency in Cancelo’s recovery run to provide back-up there.

14:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: And the Hammers are getting more joy going forward too. Rice drives into the box, it’s eventually worked out to Coufal and he wins a corner for his side. Up come the centre-backs.

Dawson again gets up well, but he can’t direct the header. Hammers do very well to slow down the City break.

14:27 , Matt Verri

27 mins: London Stadium in fine voice now, that Bowen goal has completely changed the mood.

Every clearance and header being cheered massively. City will certainly feel the pressure on them the longer this goes on.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:26 , Matt Verri

And you can file that goal right at the top of the “against the run of play” category, too. Terrific, instinctive stuff from Fornals and Bowen finished brilliantly after looking like he might’ve been forced too wide.

GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Man City | Jarrod Bowen 24'

14:24 , Matt Verri

OUT OF NOWHERE!

West Ham take the lead! So, so simple. Fornals just knocks a ball over the top, Bowen times his run and gets in behind.

Clean through on goal, goes round Ederson and finishes from a tight angle. Lovely finish.

14:23 , Matt Verri

23 mins: CLOSE!

The pressure continues to build on the Hammers. Corner falls for City and Bernardo has an effort blocked from 20 yards out.

Fernandinho then tries his luck from further out, catches it so sweetly. Just over.

14:22 , Matt Verri

22 mins: City win it back deep in West Ham territory, Rodri brings it forward and drills an effort at goal from the edge of the box.

Dawson sticks a leg out, the ball flicks up off it and over the bar. Just as well, it had completely wrong-footed Fabianski.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

14:19 , Matt Verri

Encouragement for West Ham in Michail Antonio’s first chance to run at a centre-back pairing that is both makeshift and carrying injury concerns.

He looked to have breezed past Fernandinho but the Brazilian’s slide tackle, which started about half-an-hour before he actually nicked the ball, does enough.

14:19 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Antonio has a chance to run and he does it all by himself, holding off a couple and then he beats Fernandinho for pace.

Opts not to go for goal, and gets crowded out as Cancelo arrives on the scene. City man is then fouled by Antonio - it would be fair to say the striker then absolutely erupts at Anthony Taylor.

14:17 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Nervy moments for West Ham.

Early cross swung into the box, Fabianski off his line to claim but he drops it. A couple more fumbles follow as Grealish puts pressure on him, with the goalkeeper fortunate to get a free-kick.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:16 , Matt Verri

City are just so good at taking the atmosphere and sting out of the occasion. All that emotion before kick-off around Mark Noble, the home crowd in great voice and it’s just gone because their side have hardly had a kick since that Dawson chance.

14:15 , Matt Verri

15 mins: Jesus puts a cross into the box, bit of a mix-up at the back from West Ham. They just about get it clear.

Only to Laporte though and the City wave swarms forward once again.

14:13 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Quiet start from West Ham, they haven’t really got going at all. Crowd not really engaged either.

Suits City, who continue to knock the ball around comfortably. Nothing really to show for it yet though.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:11 , Matt Verri

Shocker from Laporte on the lino. Get him off.

14:11 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Play stopped as the linesman goes down with a knock - Laporte stood on his foot.

Made the most of it though, he was a couple of seconds away from rolling around on the floor.

14:09 , Matt Verri

9 mins: Antonio will fancy his chances up against Fernandinho, West Ham just need to provide the service.

Long ball forward from Rodri looks for the run of Mahrez in behind Cresswell, too much on it and the ball skips out of play.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:07 , Matt Verri

A huge roar greets Declan Rice’s first tackle on Kevin de Bruyne and then Tomas Soucek is just about out fast enough to get half-a-block on the Belgian’s strike.

Those two have a heck of a job on their hands this afternoon.

14:06 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Plenty of crosses from both sides, which you’d imagine would very much suit West Ham.

Silva swings a ball in towards Fernandinho, headed out. De Bruyne then hammers an effort at goal, flicks off Soucek and Laporte can’t direct the header as the ball flew at him.

Malik Ouzia at London Stadium

14:04 , Matt Verri

Terrific stuff from Jarrod Bowen down the right, who is one of three players on the pitch nominated for the Premier League’s player of the season gong.

West Ham have started well and should probably be ahead - complete mis-match between Dawson and Zinchenko at the back post.

14:04 , Matt Verri

4 mins: First West Ham corner of the match as Bowen swings a cross in and Ederson tips it away. Hammers will be looking to make the most of these.

City make a bit of a mess of it, before Laporte hacks it away. Played back in, Dawson gets up at the back post and it’s pretty much a free header. Over the bar! Big chance.

14:02 , Matt Verri

2 mins: City seeing all of the ball in the early stages, as you’d expect.

Nice run in behind from Zinchenko, Bernardo plays it over the top to him... pokes it towards goal but not enough power on the effort.

KICK-OFF!

14:00 , Matt Verri

We are underway at the London Stadium!

13:59 , Matt Verri

Players out onto the pitch - kick-off just a couple of minutes away!

There should... should... be goals. We shall see.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

13:56 , Matt Verri

Mark Noble is out ahead of kick-off on his own to the first of what I’m sure will be several standing ovations this afternoon. He blows a kiss to the crowd after being introduced by a Danny Dyer-voiced tribute video. Obviously.

13:55 , Matt Verri

Four goals against Wolves last time out - and he hit the post!

West Ham will have to be giving Kevin De Bruyne their full attention this afternoon, he’s in incredible form.

Might want to keep an eye on Bernardo, Mahrez, Jesus and Grealish too though.

Declan Rice on Mark Noble’s impact...

13:52 , Matt Verri

“I told him the other day I was thankful that he came into my life, everything he’s done for me on and off the pitch - advice, helping me as a player through good times and bad times.

“Couldn’t have had anyone better to put his arm round me and help me into the person and player I am today.”

Thoughts from the managers...

13:45 , Matt Verri

Mark Noble interview

13:41 , Matt Verri

Mark James Noble has never been one of those captains who just tosses the coin and does little else.

He is the type who helped calm the storm which followed the club’s difficult move from Upton Park to Stratford in 2016; the type who, with other Premier League club captains, tried to minimise the severe financial consequences of Covid for clubs’ staff; and the type who helped David Moyes with information and advice when the Scot returned for his second spell as manager.

“Mark helped me a lot when I came back to the club in terms of making things better more quickly,” said Moyes. “He has an eye on a different role at the club, maybe not so much on the coaching side.

“He is certainly someone who deals well with the players, a problem-solver for us if we have difficulties behind the scenes.”

Victory for West Ham today would take them up into sixth, above Manchester United on goal difference going into the final game of the season. They’re still very much in the hunt for a Europa League place.

For Man City, three points would pretty much wrap up the Premier League title. Would leave Liverpool needing to make up a big goal difference deficit.

Plenty on the line!

Get the abacus ready

13:27 , Matt Verri

Noble happy to avoid Haaland...

13:22 , Matt Verri

Some players have second thoughts about retirement, the nearer it gets to them hanging up their boots.

Has Mark Noble reconsidered his decision?

He said: “I was saying to Craig Dawson earlier, I’ll be laying on a beach next year when he’s playing against Erling Haaland!”

That would be a no.

Guardiola defends side’s character

13:15 , Matt Verri

Pep Guardiola has fired back at former Manchester United stars Dimitar Berbatov and Patrice Evra.

Evra claimed Guardiola “doesn’t want leaders” in his team while Bebratov labeled City as acting like a “small club” during the dying embers of their dramatic Champions League loss at the Bernabeu.

Guardiola said: “When I play against them I didn’t see this kind of personality when we [Barcelona] destroyed them in the Champions League final against United. It’s the same character and personality.”

Ouch.

Benrahma misses out on the squad entirely for West Ham, who name Noble on the bench as expected.

Surely Moyes will bring him on in the second-half...

For Man City, Fernandinho and Laporte are both fit and start at centre-back, with Ake on the bench. As for the attack, it looks as strong as ever. Tough afternoon ahead for Dawson and his defensive partners.

Man City lineup

13:03 , Matt Verri

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Cancelo, Fernandinho, Laporte, Zinchenko; Rodri, De Bruyne, Bernardo; Mahrez, Jesus, Grealish.

Subs: Steffen, Ake, Sterling, Gundogan, Foden, Egan-Riley, Mbete, Palmer, Lavia.

West Ham lineup

13:00 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Fabianski, Coufal, Dawson, Zouma, Cresswell, Soucek, Rice, Fornals, Lanzini, Bowen, Antonio

Subs: Areola, Masuaku, Johnson, Fredericks, Kral, Noble, Vlasic, Yarmolenko, Okoflex

12:54 , Matt Verri

Team news coming up in just over five minutes.

Both sides have their full focus on the Premier League now, and still have plenty to play for. No reason for any resting of players today!

Injury woes for City...

12:48 , Matt Verri

Man City are set to head to the London Stadium with just one fit centre-back, in what could prove a major boost to West Ham’s Europa League hopes.

City pair John Stones and Ruben Dias had already been ruled out for the season with hamstring problems before Pep Guardiola watched both Aymeric Laporte and club captain Fernandinho - who had been deputising in the backline - limp off against Wolves in midweek.

“Apparently it doesn’t look good,” Guardiola said after full-time in the 5-1 rout at Molineux. “It is some muscular problems for Fernandinho, so it will be difficult for Sunday. Aymeric had a tough knock in his knee and it will be difficult for Sunday.”

It leaves Nathan Ake as City’s only fit senior centre-half, and the Dutchman has himself only just returned from an ankle problem,

Noble: Not bothered if I get on the pitch

12:39 , Matt Verri

Mark Noble insists he is “not bothered at all” if he doesn’t get onto the pitch during his West Ham farewell this afternoon.

Manchester City’s visit to the London Stadium is the Hammers’ final home game before Noble hangs up his boots after well over 500 appearances for the club at the end of the season.

“I’m not bothered at all if I play,” Noble said. “I’ve spoken about it with the manager.

“For me the club getting into Europe again, into the Europa League, outweighs a sentimental send off for me. Obviously, I’m going to get a great reception, I know that and if I get some minutes great but I have played enough minutes in my life.

“We need to worry about getting the points rather than worrying about me.”

Prediction

12:24 , Matt Verri

City are certainly weakened by their injury problems but given the manner of their performances since going out of the Champions League, it’s difficult to bet against them.

West Ham may well be able to cause the much-changed defence problems, but City have been in superb goalscoring form themselves.

Manchester City to win 2-1.

How they could line up...

12:18 , Matt Verri

Predicted West Ham XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski, Coufal, Dawson, Zouma, Cresswell, Soucek, Rice, Fornals, Lanzini, Bowen, Antonio

Predicted Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Cancelo, Rodri, Ake, Zinchenko; Silva, Gundogan, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling.

Early team news

12:11 , Matt Verri

David Moyes confirmed Michail Antonio, Craig Dawson and Said Benrahma all suffered slight knocks during last week’s win at Norwich.

Only Benrahma is of concern for this game however, with the manager saying on Friday: “Said’s a little bit of a question mark, he’s been back out doing some light jogging. Not quite as bad as we thought but he’s not quite as good as being fit.”

City, meanwhile, are suffering a defensive crisis. Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte were forced off at Wolves, potentially joining Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias and John Stones on the sidelines.

Nathan Ake did come on and, pending any setback, looks most likely to partner Rodri in central defence if neither doubts recover in time.
