West Ham vs Olympiacos LIVE! Europa League result, match stream and latest updates today

Lucas Paqueta's second-half goal earned West Ham United a 1-0 home win over Olympiakos on Thursday and kept them top of Europa League Group A.

Following their 2-1 loss to the Greeks a fortnight ago, West Ham retained top spot on nine points, level with Freiburg who crushed bottom side Backa Topola 5-0. Olympiakos are third with four points.

Paqueta broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 73rd minute following a fine James Ward-Prowse pass with a left-foot shot for his third goal in European competition this season which was confirmed after a VAR review for offside. On an off-night for the Brazilian, he still managed to score a brilliant winner.

Fans at the London Stadium held their breath as the visitors nearly equalised late in the game when Mady Camara's close-range header struck the post. David Moyes's side managed to hold on and get back to winning ways in Europe, keeping their first clean sheet in eight games in the process.

Moyes 'really pleased' as West Ham get back on track

23:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

David Moyes was pleased to see West Ham get back on track in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Lucas Paqueta’s fine volley 17 minutes from time proved enough for the Hammers to enact revenge on Olympiacos in what had been billed as something of a grudge match.

Angelo Ogbonna was among those to have been critical of the opposition for their celebrations following last month’s 2-1 victory in Piraeus, a result that ended Moyes’s 17-match unbeaten streak on the continent.

Paqueta provides much-needed spark for West Ham in vital win

22:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

West Ham’s players had talked this up as something of an unexpected grudge match, somewhat put out by the extent of Olympiacos’s celebrations following their victory in the reverse fixture in Piraeus a fortnight ago.

Even so, the statement posted to travelling fans on the Greek club’s website ahead of kick-off seemed a little excessive: among the listed items fans were politely advised not bring into the ground were weapons, ammunition, fireworks and explosives.

West Ham player ratings: Aguerd gets back to basics; Paqueta decisive

22:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

Lucas Paqueta scored the winner as West Ham got revenge on Olympiacos in the Europa League.

In what had been billed as something of a grudge match ahead of the game after a fiery away leg last month, David Moyes and his side sealed a crucial three points and confirmed they will be playing European football in some capacity after Christmas.

Here's how David Moyes's side rated at the London Stadium...

FT: West Ham 1-0 Olympiacos

21:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

Paqueta's goal the difference as Hammers get revenge on Greek giants.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Five added minutes!

21:53 , Jonathan Gorrie

90 mins: Greek side still pushing here.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

21:51 , Jonathan Gorrie

Interesting that Moyes is sending on Divin Mubama ahead of Michail Antonio here. West Ham are trying desperately to get the young forward to sign a new contract at the moment...

West Ham vs Olympiacos: CHANCE FOR AWAY SIDE!

21:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

85 mins: Camara misses a great chance at the back post following a flick on from a corner.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Fabianski lucky

21:45 , Jonathan Gorrie

82 mins: The West Ham 'keeper fumbles at a cross and almost lets a header slip in past him.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: GOAL! Lucas Paqueta '73

21:39 , Jonathan Gorrie

73 mins: Paqueta latches onto a lovely ball over the top from Ward-Prowse.

Initially flagged for offside, VAR has given the goal!

Superb work from James Ward-Prowse. People often question what exactly he does in open play but he was so alert to spot the danger there.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

21:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

Telling that David Moyes hasn't turned to his bench yet. He feels he's got all his best attacking players on the pitch already and the evidence of the season so far would suggest he's right.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

21:27 , Jonathan Gorrie

Just feels like a slight sense of urgency has come to West Ham in the last few minutes and a little more desperation in the visiting side's defending.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: CHANCE FOR WEST HAM!

21:26 , Jonathan Gorrie

63 mins: Bowen pulls one back for Ward-Prowse but he can't make a good enough connection to trouble the 'keeper.

He'll be disappointed but West Ham are at least upping the tempo.

West Ham vs Olympiakos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

21:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

He's missed a couple of chances but defensively, Nayef Aguerd is having his most solid game for a while.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

21:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

This is a game getting worse by the minute and it's not been helped by some very gullible refereeing. The Olympiacos physios are earning their keep, mind.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Back underway!

21:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

Away we go!

Paqueta does come back out, despite limping towards the end of the first half.

HT: West Ham 0-0 Olympiacos

20:53 , Jonathan Gorrie

Aguerd has missed the best chance on a half that went a little flat.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Paqueta injury worry

20:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

45 mins: The Brazilian appears to be limping.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

I think West Ham have just been on the wrong end of a rule quirk Jose Mourinho once famously told his Chelsea defenders to exploit. Olympiacos had two players down injured and needing treatment - and as a result, neither of them had to go off afterwards.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: CHANCE FOR AWAY SIDE!

20:39 , Jonathan Gorrie

36 mins: Podence blazes a volley over after a quick counter.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

We spoke to Nayef Aguerd in the mixed zone a few weeks back and he was talking about how the arrival of James Ward-Prowse and his wicked corners had all West Ham's defenders thinking they could get amongst the goals more often. The Moroccan could have had a hat-trick here.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: CHANCE FOR WEST HAM!

20:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

32 mins: Patient play from the hosts finds Benrahma out on the left and he tries to beat the 'keeper at his near post.

That is saved but results in a corner, which is followed in another.

Aguerd then misses a header when he really could have done better.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Visitors growing in belief

20:30 , Jonathan Gorrie

27 mins: Moyes calling for urgency from his team...

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:27 , Jonathan Gorrie

Now 15 yellow cards in his last 26 games for club and country for Edson Alvarez. Seven in 14 since joining West Ham. Was suspended at Brentford at the weekend and is going to miss plenty more at the rate he's going

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:21 , Jonathan Gorrie

Predictably, given the contrast in environment, but this has been a very different game to a fortnight ago. In Athens, West Ham looked skittish from the outset and never really recovered but they've settled nicely here.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

Mohammed Kudus's acceleration over a few yards is just something else. Time and again it looks like he's overrun the ball but gets there first in duels that you'd have 70-30 in the defender's favour.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: CHANCE FOR WEST HAM!

20:16 , Jonathan Gorrie

13 mins: Paqueta finds Benrahma on the edge of the box but he can't quite dig the ball out of his feet.

The 'keeper saves his shot and Aguerd's header from the corner is saved.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Penalty call

20:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

07 mins: Alexandropoulos wants a penalty after believing his header hit Paqueta on the arm.

Nothing given.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Paqueta thriving

20:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

04 mins: The Brazilian wins the ball back high up the pitch before finding Benrahma, who puts too much on the cross.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

20:06 , Jonathan Gorrie

You sense David Moyes isn't Said Benrahma's biggest fan at the best of times and I'm not sure shooting from 35 yards when he might've slipped Jarrod Bowen in will improve things.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Early chance for the Hammers

20:05 , Jonathan Gorrie

02 mins: Benrahma attempts an ambitious strike from outside the box when he could well have slid Kudus in.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: KICK-OFF!

20:02 , Jonathan Gorrie

Away we go!

The atmosphere in Greece a fortnight ago was absolutely rocking and a packed away end are bouncing around making a right old racket here.

The West Ham fans in the sections near the travellers are doing their best to give a bit back but even David Moyes yesterday agreed it was pointless thinking any Premier League atmosphere could match what we saw at Olympiacos.

West Ham sound out investors as Vanessa Gold puts large portion of family’s shares up for sale

18:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

Daniel Kretinsky is not expected to increase his stake in West Ham despite Vanessa Gold putting a significant portion of her family’s share in the club up for sale.

The Czech billionaire is the second-largest shareholder, having purchased a 27 per cent stake in 2021, while the Gold family trust owns 25%.

Gold, daughter of former joint-chairman David Gold, announced yesterday she would be willing to sell part of that stake — up to 10% of the club — “to the right partner”.

Kretinsky and David Sullivan, who owns the largest share at just shy of 39%, were consulted over the decision, as was American financier Tripp Smith, who has an 8% stake.

Were Kretinsky to buy the full 10% on offer from the Golds, his stake would grow to only just shy of joint-chair Sullivan’s, while a slightly larger purchase could even make him the club’s largest shareholder. However, it is understood that the 48-year-old is not interested in a deal at this stage.

Instead, Gold has enlisted the Rothschild & Co. bank to sound out external investors as global interest in owning Premier League clubs continues to surge.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Hammers ready to raise temperature ahead of grudge match

17:53 , Jonathan Gorrie

West Ham’s players are eyeing Thursday night’s Europa League clash with Olympiacos as a grudge match as they seek revenge for a hostile welcome in Greece a fortnight ago.

The Hammers saw their 17-match unbeaten run ended by a 2-1 defeat in Piraeus but remain top of Group A and victory in east London would take them to brink of the knockout stages.

Speaking ahead of the game, centre-back Angelo Ogbonna accused Olympiacos fans of a lack of respect after visiting players were targeted by lasers during the defeat in Greece, with West Ham also unimpressed by the manner of the home side’s celebrations at full-time.

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Kurt Zouma injury latest

17:46 , Jonathan Gorrie

Zouma was missing from West Ham's main training session at Rush Green on Wednesday but did train separately, including some ball work on grass with the club's coaching staff.

"We’re still waiting on Kurt," West Ham boss David Moyes confirmed at his pre-match press conference. "He didn’t train [with the main group] this morning. He’s done a bit inside and we'll have a look tomorrow and see how he is."

West Ham vs Olympiacos: Hammers hould relish cup pedigree with Europe to define Moyes legacy

17:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

David Moyes appeared to be paying his West Ham team a backhanded compliment when he posited last week that they may well have become simply a good cup team.

The context was a comprehensive win over Arsenal that sent the Hammers into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. Heading into Thursday's meeting with Olympiacos, they are top of their Europa League group, too, well on course to play knockout football on the continent for a third season in a row.
