West Ham vs Southampton LIVE!

West Ham secured a precious three points in their battle to stay up as they beat Southampton to ease the pressure on David Moyes. Nayef Aguerd’s first-half header settled a nervy game that was low on quality at the London Stadium. The win moves West Ham up to 14th in the Premier League and a point above the bottom three.

After a nervy start, West Ham went ahead on 25 minutes with their first effort on goal when Aguerd met a Thilo Kehrer free-kick to head home a huge goal. There was a long VAR check for offside but the goal stood in what felt like a huge moment in the season.

The returning Lukasz Fabianski made a brilliant save to deny Romain Perraud an immediate response. Said Benrahma went close with a free-kick in the second half, Southampton substitute Paul Onuachu hit the bar with a header late on but West Ham held on for a crucial win.

87 mins: Double change for West Ham. Cresswell for Emerson. Fornals for Paqueta.

15:48 , Giuseppe Muro

86 mins: Off the bar! Southampton so close to an equaliser. Onuachu meets a cross and thunders a header off the bar with Fabianski beaten! Walker-Peters then shoots over. Huge let-off for West Ham.

15:46 , Giuseppe Muro

84 mins: Southampton scored two late goals against Tottenham two weeks ago but West Ham look fairly comfortable here.

15:44 , Giuseppe Muro

82 mins: And from the resulting corner, Paqueta finds space at the far post but he is off balance and shoots over.

15:43 , Giuseppe Muro

81 mins: Almost game over! Bazunu has to tip over to prevent a Caleta-Car own goal after a cross from Bowen.

15:43 , Giuseppe Muro

80 mins: Into the final 10 minutes. A clever pass looks for Onuachu but Fabianski is quick off his line to collect.

15:36 , Giuseppe Muro

74 mins: Benrahma stings the palms of Bazunu with a free-kick! Great effort from the West Ham man. Zouma heads over from the resulting corner.

15:34 , Giuseppe Muro

73 mins:The game has settled down again now, which will suit West Ham.

15:33 , Giuseppe Muro

71 mins: Two changes for Southampton. Maitland-Niles and the 6ft 7ins Onuachu are on.

15:31 , Giuseppe Muro

70 mins: West Ham win a corner, Southampton fail to clear properly and Bowen has goal bound shot blocked.

15:29 , Giuseppe Muro

68 mins: Another change for West Ham as Downes replaces Soucek.

15:28 , Giuseppe Muro

65 mins: Finally a bit of pressure from West Ham. Bowen with a chance as his low shot is blocked, and then the Hammers come forward again but no-one is there to connect with a good Bowen cross into the box.

15:25 , Giuseppe Muro

64 mins: Here’s that West Ham change. Antonio on for Ings.

15:25 , Giuseppe Muro

63 mins: More pressure from Southampton. The changes have made a difference. Alcaraz shoots from distance and Fabianski is forced into another save.

15:24 , Giuseppe Muro

62 mins: Southampton have won a couple of corners in the last few minutes. The second on which turns into a chance for Lavia and his shot is saved down low by Fabianski. That came through a few bodies so was a smart stop.

15:22 , Giuseppe Muro

61 mins: Into the final half-hour. A big 30 minutes coming up in West Ham’s season, you sense.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

15:22 , Giuseppe Muro

Looks like Michail Antonio is going to be on shortly. Danny Ings has been pretty peripheral so far.

15:21 , Giuseppe Muro

60 mins: Southampton are enjoying a decent spell here. Sulemana is looking lively.

15:18 , Giuseppe Muro

56 mins: It’s been a bright start from Sulemana, who shoots wide from the edge of the area.

15:18 , Giuseppe Muro

55 mins: West Ham come forward through Ings, he hasn’t got the pace to get away from his defender but Bowen latches onto it and shoots wide.

15:15 , Giuseppe Muro

53 mins: The onus is on Southampton here and they make an early double change at the start of the second half, with Alcaraz and Sulemana coming on.

15:12 , Giuseppe Muro

51 mins: All the time it stays 1-0 it’s going to remain nervy inside the London Stadium. The ball falls to Armstrong at the back post but his lofted cross is cleared.

15:11 , Giuseppe Muro

50 mins: Quiet start to the second half. West Ham won’t mind that.

15:08 , Giuseppe Muro

47 mins: With no Che Adams, what have Southampton got to try and change this? West Ham looked comfortable in the first half after their goal.

15:06 , Giuseppe Muro

46 mins: Back underway at the London Stadium.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

15:02 , Giuseppe Muro

The goal has completely changed this game. West Ham were grimly hesitant in possession until that point and the crowd seemed in danger of turning on them but the last 15 minutes they’ve been well on top.

15:02 , Giuseppe Muro

Some breaking news from elsewhere in the Premier League during the first half. Leicester have sacked manager Brendan Rodgers after their defeat at Crystal Palace yesterday. That result at Selhurst Park leaves the Foxes in the relegation zone.

14:58 , Giuseppe Muro

Here’s the goal that separates the two sides…

Half-time: West Ham 1-0 Southampton

14:52 , Giuseppe Muro

Nayef Aguerd’s first West Ham goal is the difference at the break.

It’s not been a classic but the Hammers won’t mind, as it stands they are are up to 14th.

14:48 , Giuseppe Muro

45+1 mins: Off the crossbar from Bowen! A brilliant effort and almost a huge moment right at the end of the first half. Bazunu was well beaten.

14:44 , Giuseppe Muro

43 mins: First yellow card of the afternoon as Caleta-Car is booked for a wild challenge on Bowen.

14:44 , Giuseppe Muro

42 mins: Some sloppy defending from WestHam and Elyounoussi gets to the byline and Fabianski has to punch away a cross.

14:41 , Giuseppe Muro

40 mins: West Ham sense a second goal here and there’s only one team in this right now. What can Southampton do to change that?

14:39 , Giuseppe Muro

38 mins: Kehrer ventures forward again, this time teeing up Benrahma on the edge of the area and he curls an effort over the bar.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:38 , Giuseppe Muro

I reckon you'd have wanted literally any other player on the pitch running onto that before Kehrer, possibly including Fabianski.

14:38 , Giuseppe Muro

35 mins: Big chance for West Ham to double their lead! Kehrer finds himself the furthest man forward and he latches on to a ball from Benrahma and looks to be away. But his first touch his heavy and he gets it all wrong.

14:36 , Giuseppe Muro

34 mins: As it stands, West Ham are climbing up to 14th in the table...

14:35 , Giuseppe Muro

32 mins: West Ham attack down the left, Emerson stands up a cross to the back post and a Southampton defence is forced to turn the ball behind for a corner, which is cleared.

14:33 , Giuseppe Muro

30 mins: Almost an immediate response from Southampton... and what a save from Fabianski! A low shot from Perraud and it is heading for the bottom corner but the West Ham goalkeeper gets down low to turn it behind.

GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Southampton | Nayef Aguerd 25’

14:29 , Giuseppe Muro

Aguerd heads the Hammers ahead with their first effort on goal! How big could that goal be for West Ham in their battle to stay up?

The Moroccan rises highest from a free-kick into the box and loops a header over Bazunu.

VAR looked at that from more than three minutes but the goal stands.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:24 , Giuseppe Muro

Loud boos again as Kehrer’s first touch takes him back towards his own goal when there were positive options on up the line.

14:24 , Giuseppe Muro

21 mins: Southampton have played a lot of football in West Ham's third and the home fans are losing patience. A few boos as the Hammers pass the ball around inside their own half. They want to see more urgency from their team.

14:21 , Giuseppe Muro

18 mins: Southampton come forward again, it comes to nothing but Rice screams for more urgency from West Ham. And more groans from around the stadium.

14:18 , Giuseppe Muro

16 mins: First effort on goal and it comes from Southampton. Walcott turns inside the area and his left-footed half-volley goes just wide. Fabianski always had it covered.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:16 , Giuseppe Muro

The crowd are already very angsty here. Frustrated at the hesitancy in West Ham's play. All a bit backwards and sideways at the moment.

14:15 , Giuseppe Muro

13 mins: This is a better spell for Southampton now and there’s the first sign of a bit of frustration from the home fans as they try to urge their team forward. There needs to be more urgency from West Ham.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:13 , Giuseppe Muro

This’ll be news to no one but I think this is my first time watching him in the flesh and already Romeo Lavia looks a proper player. Breaking up the game nicely early on.

14:12 , Giuseppe Muro

10 mins: Southampton come forward and space suddenly opens up for Walker-Peters inside the area, but he stumbles and West Ham clear.

14:10 , Giuseppe Muro

8 mins: Rice is seeing a lot of the ball for West Ham. The Hammers will be looking to the England man to unlock the Southampton defence from a deep position. It is all into the feet of Ings and Benrahma so far, West Ham need to make some runs in behind.

14:09 , Giuseppe Muro

7 mins: Walcott runs the channel down the right but his cross finds Fabianski.

14:08 , Giuseppe Muro

5 mins: Southampton are looking to slow this down as much as possible when in possession. The home fans are waiting for their team to lift them. All very cagey early on.

Malik Ouzia at the London Stadium

14:05 , Giuseppe Muro

A few vintage bits of Theo Walcott in the first few minutes here. Twice already he’s tried to scamper away and left the ball behind as it clips off his heel.

14:05 , Giuseppe Muro

3 mins: Positive start from West Ham. They come forward down the left but Benrahma overhits a cross and it goes behind.

14:03 , Giuseppe Muro

1 mins: You can sense a nervous energy around the London Stadium. The first goal today feels vital.

Kick-off!

A huge 90 minutes coming up for West Ham and David Moyes.

Here come the two teams.

‘I’m forever blowing bubbles’ rings out from the West Ham fans. This feels like a huge afternoon in the battle against relegation!

Almost time in east London.

It’s a biggie today.

David Moyes has been speaking to Sky Sports.

On form: "We finished in really good form before the international break with a really good 4-0 win here in the Europa Conference League. Unfortunately our game with Manchester City was off [due to the FA Cup] but it's given us a bit of time to get refreshed and ready to go again for what looks like a really busy couple of months.

"Our form at home has been pretty good so we have to try and keep that going.

On team news: "It was a big decision between Lukasz [Fabianski] and Alphonse [Areola] because Alphonse has done really well but we felt Lukasz hasn't done that much wrong. He got a nasty injury which has had a chance to heal. He feels fine.

On today: "I know Southampton are at the bottom and we're just above them. James Ward-Prowse is a big threat at set-pieces so you're trying not to give away too many free-kicks but overall we have to show the form we have shown at home over the last month or so."

13:26 , Alex Young

West Ham will be relying on Ings today to pull them out of trouble against one of his former teams.

He has scored just twice since arriving in January, and the Hammers have just 24 goals from 26 games in total - and four of them can in the same game.

With Scamacca out, Antonio on the bench and struggling with a knock, it’s down to Ings to provide the firepower.

West Ham have today been boosted by the return of both Nayef Aguerd and Emerson Palmieri for the visit of Southampton, but Gianluca Scamaccamisses out.

Aguerd was carrying a hip issue, while Scamacca has a knee problem and Emerson had been suffering with illness.

Vladimir Coufal is also back, making the bench.

The right-back missed the Irons’ last two league games prior to the international break with a persistent heel problem but was fit enough to start both matches for Czech Republic over the last fortnight.

Moyes also returns Lukasz Fabianski in goal with the Pole having recovered from a fractured cheekbone suffered in the 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest last month.

Team news is imminent.

Southampton manager Ruben Selles feels everyone at the club must trust in the process if they are going to maintain their Premier League status.

"We talk about how we are in a process and we are building things," Selles said. "The first goal against Tottenham is a clear process. We had a chance after two minutes which showed the movement we want to do and we had more chances with those same movements which showed we didn't lose structure.

"Even though we were two goals down, we stuck to the plan. Even with the finishers, with the substitutions, we stuck to the plan. We knew we were going to score goals.

"There are ups and downs when you are trying to build something, but the points are there and I think we can get some more wins in the last 10 games."

David Moyes believes his West Ham players are ready to fight for their Premier League lives.

"Yes, I do, I think the players are ready," he said. "I think we're in a good frame of mind and we're ready to go and hopefully, go on and try and pick up the points to make sure that we're not near the bottom end of the league.

"Our results in Europe have been really, really good - 10 matches unbeaten - and that's kept us going a little bit, kept the belief.

"We're certainly not acting behind the scenes like we are a team in the wrong part of the league. I see the players around the club in good spirits and that's partly because of our results in Europe."

Score prediction

12:05 , Alex Young

The Hammers are in fine fettle at home, where they are unbeaten in four, and should have enough threat in front of goal through ex-Saints man Danny Ings to score some goals.

Southampton, meanwhile, are quite tough to predict right now but have too many issues at the back to make themselves favourites in east London.

West Ham to win, 2-1.

Early Southampton team news

11:56 , Alex Young

Southampton are hopeful both Mohammed Salisu and Che Adams will be available today following their return from international duty carrying minor issues.

Armel Bella-Kotchap (shoulder) is still sidelined, however, while defender Juan Larios (hamstring) has been ruled out for the season.

Early West Ham team news

11:48 , Marc Mayo

Lukasz Fabianski is set to be available again after recovering from a set of facial injuries suffered against Nottingham Forest, with Michail Antonio (calf) and Vladimir Coufal (heel) also likely to be involved.

However, the Hammers are sweating over the fitness of Emerson Palmieri, Gianluca Scamacca and Nayef Aguerd after they picked up knocks on international duty.

Hello and welcome!

Bournemouth’s win yesterday dropped the Hammers down to 19th making this a clash of the bottom two in the Premier League - yet three points would catapult either up the table.
