Torquay United were in front twice but had to settle for a point at Weymouth in their National League South Boxing Day derby in Dorset this afternoon.

The Gulls, still top of the table, went ahead through Will Jenkins Davies right at the end of the first half, but Weymouth leveled through Btandon Goodship in the 49th minute. Torquay went ahead again through Cody Cooke in the 58th minute - but Goodship made it 2-2 in the 79th minute.

It was top against bottom of course, so a disappointing result for the Gulls, but they will now focus on the New Year Day home derby against Truro City,

Paul Wotton made two changes to the team that started the 1-0 win against Hemel Hempstead Town. Jordan Thomas was back after the minor injury that kept him out of the last game, with Finn Tonks dropping out of the 16 altogether. Left-back Jay Foulston limped from the pitch against Hemel so Matt Carson came into the defence. Lirak Hasani returned to the squad after finishing his three-match ban - to sit on the bench.

There were around 1,000 Gulls fans in the Bob Lucas Stadium for this Boxing Day South West derby for which Torquay wore their white third kit. A very early shot by Omar Mussa was blocked on its way to goal. A Dan Hayfield free kick hit the wall. A decent strike by Hayfield went just wide in the eighth minute. When the ball went into the Torquay box, it was defended well. James Hamon had to make a smart low save from a Charlie Rowan header in the 20th minute.

Right-side attacker Jordan Young was proving a handful for the Weymouth defence and Thomas had a shot deflected wide in the 33rd minute. Torquay survived a spell going into the last five minutes of the first half when they had to throw bodies in the way of a series of shots after a bad pass by Oscar Threlkeld. But it was 1-0 in the 48th minute, just before half time, when Jenkins Davies got on the end of a lovely ball by Threlkeld to score from the back post.

It was 1-1 quickly after the restart though. Torquay were caught on the counter attack four minutes into the second half when Goodship struck well - and Hamon couldn’t stop the ball going past him.

A foul on Cooke in the 58th minute gave Young the chance to cross the ball into the box and Cooke made it 2-1 when he met the ball with a brilliant header - for his 10th goal of the season.

A Thomas cross was deflected onto the bar as Torquay upped the pressure after Cooke’s goal. Mussa was replaced by Dylan Morgan in the 63nd minute. A Hayfield shot from the halfway line was stopped by Will Buse. A Jake McCarthy header flashed over the bar as Torquay got a bit sloppy. Craske came on for Carson in the 76th minute.

Craske came on for Carson in the 76th minute and within three minutes he was beaten down the right hand side and Goodship drilled the ball home at the end of a cross for 2-2. Jack Wood came on for Young in the 83rd minute, and Hasani replaced Jenkins Davies in the 87th. Brooklyn Genesini went close with a shot that flew just wide as the game went into injury time.

Five minutes were added on and a free-kick was chopped away by the Weymouth defence as Torquay failed to fashion a chance to get ahead for a third time.
