Where are they now? The last Blues team to face Newcastle United in 2017

Ipswich Town last faced Newcastle United on Easter Monday in April 2017. Ross Halls takes a look at where the team from that game are now...

The Blues' produced a impressive victory over the Magpies at Portman Road back in the Championship as Mick McCarthy's side took on Rafael Benitez's promotion-chasing men.

Freddie Sears put Town in front just before half-time, before former Blues striker Daryl Murphy netted an equaliser just after the hour mark. But David McGoldrick gave Town the lead again seven minute.

The three points were sealed in style in injury time when Emyr Huws volleyed into the top corner before celebrating in front of the ecstatic Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

BARTOSZ BIALKOWSKI 

The Polish keeper made more than 150 appearances for Town and won the club’s Player of the Year award for three successive seasons.

Bialkowski retired from football this summer after five seasons at Millwall, having joined the Lions initially on loan from the Blues in the summer of 2019.

JORDAN SPENCE

The right-back spent three years at Town, where he made more than 50 appearances, before he was released at the end of the 2018/19 season.

Spence spent some time at Dutch side ADO Den Haag in 2020, but hasn't signed for another team since. He hasn't officially retired but now runs a production company in LA with his wife, actress Naomi Scott.

LUKE CHAMBERS

The former captain nearly made 400 appearances for the club before he was released in the summer of 2021. He subsequently spent two seasons at Colchester United.

Chambers retired from football last summer and has started his own clothing brand while still living in the area. He has also started doing work in the media.

CHRISTOPHE BERRA

The Scot made nearly 200 appearances during his four seasons at Portman Road before he departed to return to Scotland for spells at Hearts, Dundee and Raith Rovers.

Berra retired from football in 2022, where he has since gone into coaching. Most recently he was the interim head coach of Huntsville FC in the United States, but left in the summer and is now looking for his next role.

MYLES KENLOCK

The left-back made over 100 appearances for Town, before he was released in the summer of 2022, having spent time on loan at Colchester United.

Kenlock signed for Barnet on a three-year deal this summer after spending most of last season at fellow fifth tier side Ebbsfleet United. He also had spells at Barrow and Aldershot Town since he left Portman Road.

COLE SKUSE

The midfielder spent eight years at Portman Road, making more than 250 appearances and left the club to join Colchester United in the summer of 2021.

Skuse retired from playing at the end of the 2022/23 season and is now the manager of Suffolk non-league side Bury Town, who play in the eighth-tier of English football and are chasing promotion this season.

GRANT WARD

The winger burst onto the scene at Town, bagging a second half hat-trick on his debut against Barnsley in August 2016, but he never really hit those heights again, leaving the Blues in May 2019.

Ward went on to sign for Blackpool where he helped them win promotion to the Championship in 2021. He is now at League One side Bristol Rovers.

EMYR HUWS

The Welshman was on loan at Ipswich Town from Cardiff City, before he signed for the club on a much-trumpeted permanent deal. But injuries hampered his time at Town, as he made just 55 appearances during his four year spell.

Huws retired from football at the age of 30 last year, having spent two seasons at Colchester United. He now works alongside Chambers with their clothing brand.

FREDDIE SEARS

The forward scored 34 goals in 217 games during his time at Town before leaving Portman Road to return to Colchester United in 2021.

Sears signed for seventh-tier side Chatham Town this summer after spells at Braintree Town and Dagenham & Redbridge last campaign.

TOM LAWRENECE

The attacker impressed during his loan spell from Leicester City, netting 11 goals in 36 games.

Lawrence is now at Scottish giants Rangers, having joined them from Derby County in the summer of 2022.

DAVID MCGOLDRICK

The forward spent five years at Town, scoring 45 goals, before leaving the club to join Sheffield United, where he went on to play in the Premier League for the Blades.

McGoldrick returned to his boyhood club Notts County last summer, where he is still playing and scoring regularly at the age of 37.
