Where Opta 'supercomputer' predicts Rovers will finish this season
Opta’s Championship ‘supercomputer’ predicts that Rovers will finish seventh and narrowly miss out on the play-offs.
John Eustace’s men are currently a point behind sixth-place West Brom and have played a game fewer than the Baggies.
However, Rovers have now gone five matches without victory following a tough run of fixtures over the Christmas period.
Opta uses a wide range of data from the campaign so far to simulate the remaining matches 10,000 times and then calculate the average positions for each club.
The ‘supercomputer’ claims that Rovers have a 43 per cent chance of making the top six compared to West Brom’s 56 per cent and Middlesbrough’s 55 per cent.
Current leaders Leeds are tipped to clinch the title, with Sheffield United securing the other automatic promotion spot and Burnley narrowly missing out.
However, it is expected to be extremely tight at the top. Leeds are predicted to finish on 90 points, with the Blades and the Clarets averaging 88.9 and 88.3 points respectively throughout the simulations.
Sunderland’s chances of breaking into the top two are rated at just 11 per cent despite the Black Cats only sitting a couple of points behind Burnley and Sheffield United at the time of writing.
Watford, Norwich and Bristol City are the other sides predicted to finish in the top 10 come the end of the season.

As for the relegation battle, it is no surprise that Plymouth are the favourites for the drop at this stage.
The Pilgrims find themselves bottom of the table and three points adrift as they search for a new boss after parting ways with Wayne Rooney.
Plymouth’s chances of going down are rated at 77 per cent, with Cardiff (61 per cent) and Hull (43 per cent) the other favourites for the drop. That means the likes of Portsmouth, Oxford and Luton would survive.
