Why Adil Aouchiche's proposed Sunderland exit has stalled - and Regis Le Bris' plans
REGIS LE BRIS has confirmed Adil Aouchiche will be allowed to leave Sunderland ahead of Monday night’s transfer deadline.
However, the forward’s proposed move to Portsmouth is on hold, with the south coast club currently unable to complete the transfer because of the FA’s transfer rules.
The FA changed their rules in the wake of Brexit to reflect the increased difficulty in securing a work permit for overseas players looking to play in England.
Players who are unable to obtain a full work permit can apply for an Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) certificate, but Championship clubs can only have up to four ESC players within their squad.
Portsmouth are already at their full quota, so would need a free spot to be able to add Aouchiche to their squad. While Sunderland have agreed the terms of a loan deal that would see Aouchiche move to Fratton Park for the remainder of the season, the transfer will only be completed if Portsmouth are able to move one of their ESC-registered players out of the club before Monday night.

As things stand, Sunderland are exploring alternative options for Aouchiche, with Le Bris confirming that the 22-year-old does not form part of his plans for the second half of the campaign.
“We'll see what happens,” said Le Bris, who will not be considering Aouchiche for the squad that will head to Riverside to face Middlesbrough on Monday. “We have good players, which can provoke interest. At the end, we will decide.
“With Adil, we know each other very well and it's clear that his behaviour was absolutely perfect this season. He had an opportunity and he did well, even if not in his best position.
“He worked hard and deserved it. Now, for the last couple of months it could be better for him to play and be involved in the starting XI (at another club). If it fits, it will be a good solution.”
