Liverpool will be aiming to return to winning ways in the Premier League against Brentford today - although they’ll have to do it without Diogo Jota.

The Reds are yet to pick up a league victory in 2025, but they can extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Aston Villa if they can rediscover their best form today.

Arne Slot has made just one change to his side following the midweek draw at Nottingham Forest, with Kostas Tsimikas replacing Andy Robertson at left-back. The Greek international earns a start after providing the assist to the equalizer just seconds after coming on at the City Ground.

The player who was on the end of his corner though is absent, with Jota unable to make the trip to London after his bright cameo against Forest.

The Portuguese is out injured, having missed training during the week after complaining of a knock following Tuesday’s night’s clash. Jota had been hoped to be able to take part in the Reds’ final session on Friday before today’s game, but he hasn’t been able to take his place in the matchday squad.

"He felt a little niggle (midweek),” Slot explained during his press conference. “There is no doubt about Jota's importance for us but he wasn't training. He finished the game but complained a bit about it."

Given Jota’s injury record since arriving at Liverpool, his latest knock will come as a major concern. The forward missed 11 games earlier in the season after picking up a rib injury against Chelsea, although it’s not yet known how long this latest knock might keep him out for.

The games keep coming thick and fast for Liverpool, with the Reds facing Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday after today’s clash with Brentford, before games against Ipswich and PSV Eindhoven the following week.

Slot though has been boosted by the inclusion of Luis Diaz, who had been a doubt to face Brentford after missing training with a sore throat. Joe Gomez remains out after picking up a hamstring injury against West Ham before the turn of the year.
