Why Enzo Maresca was unhappy with Tyrique George and Pedro Neto Chelsea disappointment vs Wolves
Chelsea secured their first Premier League victory of 2025 with a 3-1 win over Wolves on Monday evening. Following a late Reece James goal to secure a point against Bournemouth six days ago, Blues boss Enzo Maresca made a total of five changes to his team for the Wolves showdown.
The west London club did take the lead on 25 minutes as Tosin Adarabioyo finished from close range after James' volley from a corner was deflected into his path. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before a VAR check deemed that the centre-back was indeed in an onside position.
Despite Chelsea creating plenty of openings in the first half, Wolves restored parity in stoppage time after Matt Doherty capitalised on Robert Sanchez fumbling a corner to prod the ball home. The hosts were to restore their lead on the hour mark as Marc Cucurella was in the right position to convert in the six-yard box from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's flicked header from Noni Madueke's cross.

Moments later Chelsea put the game out of sight as Madueke helped himself to yet another goal against Wolves after converting from practically on the line just as Trevoh Chalobah's header from Cole Palmer's free-kick looked set to go in. Here are five things we spotted in the game at Stamford Bridge:
Chalobah's big performance
Recalled from his successful loan spell at Crystal Palace, Chalobah came straight into the Chelsea team for their encounter against Wolves. Amid the possibility of him just returning from Selhurst Park to watch on from the Chelsea bench, the Blues academy graduate partnered Tosin at the heart of defence as fellow defenders Axel Disasi and Josh Acheampong took their place as substitutes.
Previously Chelsea's No.14, Chalobah has had to take on a new Chelsea number following his return as Joao Felix is now the owner of the shirt. The defender opted for No.23, which has been vacant since Conor Gallagher headed for Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window.
Chalobah was immediately involved in the action as he produced a fine tackle on Jorgen Strand Larsen outside the area to stop the frontman from running clean through into the box. The home supporters certainly appreciated his timely tackle as it was greeted with a huge cheer from those inside Stamford Bridge, with a heavy landing from the striker making it a sore one for Chalobah.
The returning player was inches away from marking his comeback with a goal after rising highest to head Palmer's free-kick towards goals, only for Madueke to steam in and convert just as the ball looked to be going in. Maybe unfortunate not to cap off his Chelsea start with a goal, he produced a big performance across the 90 minutes that he deserves so much credit for.
Dewsbury-Hall chance
Dewsbury-Hall has had to be incredibly patient since joining Chelsea from Leicester City in the summer as first-team opportunities have been few and far between. Even though Maresca is well aware of what the midfielder can produce following his pivotal role in Leicester's Championship title win last season, there have been a number of occasions where the 26-year-old has not even made the matchday squad in the Premier League.
Last appearing off the bench for the Blues in the 5-1 win at Southampton in December, Dewsbury-Hall came in for his first Premier League start for Chelsea due to a lack of options in the position at present. Speaking about the Chelsea player ahead of the game, Maresca said: "I want to see the same thing he was showing last year when we were together. The same thing he has shown in some games this season, especially in the Conference League."
Dewsbury-Hall was to have a key say on the game with his flicked header from Madueke's cross converted by Cucurella on the hour mark. The midfielder certainly enjoyed the moment and you could tell how much it meant to him with his reaction to the left-back's goal.
A future role for Tosin?
If Chelsea are ever short up front and Maresca is in need of a forward then the Chelsea boss may want to consider naming Tosin as a striker going on his current form in front of goal. Opening his Blues account at the start of the year in the 5-0 FA Cup third round win over Morecambe with a deflected shot from distance, it wouldn't be too long until the defender doubled his tally.
Tosin once again let fly from outside the area and found the net with a curling effort that gave the Morecambe goalkeeper no chance. The summer signing was to make it three goals in three games as he fired Chelsea into the lead in the first half against Wolves with a good finish from close range.
The defender's total of three for the season now means he is ahead of attacker Jadon Sancho by one. Having only managed five goals in 132 appearances for Fulham, the 27-year-old is well on his way to surpassing the numbers he posted for the Cottagers.
Neto disappointment
It just didn't quite happen for Pedro Neto against his former club. Such an important player for the side from the West Midlands during his time at Molineux, Chelsea are still waiting to see the very best of the Portuguese ace.
Handed a start on the left flank against his former employers, the 24-year-old just couldn't influence proceedings and didn't do enough when he was in possession of the ball. His performance resulted in an early substitution as Sancho replaced him on 62 minutes.
After making his way across the pitch to the Chelsea dugout, Neto hugged Maresca and shared a moment with the Chelsea boss as they spoke. He did look disappointed but it was perhaps more to do with his own performance when he would have intent on wowing against Wolves.
Maresca unhappy with George
Leading 3-1 courtesy of those second-half goals from Cucurella and Madueke, Maresca made a host of Chelsea changes in the closing stages with the Blues in a rather healthy position. Introducing Disasi and Malo Gusto in place of James and Dewsbury-Hall in the 77th minute, the Italian was to make a further two changes seven minutes later.
Felix and Tyrique George were the two players to enter the fray, replacing Palmer and Madueke. At a time when the Portuguese ace was stood on the sidelines ready to come on, George was still in the dugout and had not even put his shirt on, thus resulting in Maresca having a bit of a go at the youngster for not being ready.
It was a small moment that left the head coach unhappy but the academy ace did manage to get playing time to his name as he finally made his Premier League debut for the club.
