Liverpool was due to play Everton at Goodison Park today but the fixture has been postponed as a result of Storm Darragh and the dangerous weather conditions impacting travel across the Merseyside region.

"Liverpool FC can confirm today’s Premier League fixture against Everton at Goodison Park, scheduled for a 12.30pm kick-off, has been postponed," a statement from the club posted on its official website confirmed. "This is due to severe weather and high winds, which have also resulted in severe travel disruption in and around Merseyside."

Heading into the weekend, there was a strong risk that the match could be called off. Travel across Merseyside had been disrupted and an amber weather warning for wind was issued by the Met Office a few days ago.

Very high winds have been forecast throughout the day and the horse racing at Aintree had already been called off when the decision on the Merseyside derby was made. An amber weather warning (for an "increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather, which could potentially disrupt your plans") remains in place and it was determined that fans should not be taking unnecessary journeys.

On Saturday morning, Merseyrail train services between Hunts Cross in the south of the city and Liverpool Central were suspended because of the storm. A bus replacement service was put in place. The wind and the rain are predicted to get worse before they improve.

The derby will be rearranged for later in the campaign. Liverpool plays Girona next on Tuesday in the Champions League. It will next be in Premier League action against Fulham next weekend, when Alexis Mac Allister will now serve his one-match ban.

Liverpool.com says: While it is disappointing for the game not to be happening, it could work out in some ways for Liverpool. Playing a Sean Dyche team in high winds would be a big leveler and there are quite a few injuries among the Reds' roster at the moment. The match being postponed should mean better weather and more players being available.
