Christian Walton has been told he was overdue his big chance as he helped cause a major Premier League shock.

The former Albion goalkeeper came into the Ipswich Town side and helped them beat Chelsea 2-0.

Ironically, his call-up came on the night former Seagulls colleague Robert Sanchez was left out by Chelsea.

Sanchez leapfrogged Walton in the Albion pecking order under former boss Graham Potter.

But it was Walton who was celebrating at Portman Road after playing his part in the club’s first home win since returning the Prem.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna said: “Christian deserved it.

"He has been training really really well, he has been so professional, so supportive in the group, is a very good goalkeeper, played well when he had his opportunity at the start of the season (against Liverpool) and he has knuckled down and kept himself ready.

"Part of it was him deserving his opportunity, to be honest, to come into the team and show what he can do.

“He has probably deserved that opportunity for quite a while. Even last season, to be honest.

"And Aro (Muric) had a small issue in his thigh that he's been playing through in the last couple of weeks that has been limiting him a bit with his kicking.

“That and a few other factors meant it was a good time from him to get a break tonight and for Christian to get his opportunity. He came in and did an excellent job."

Walton will hope to still be first choice by the time the Seagulls go to Portman Road later this month.
