Coventry City boss Frank Lampard was pleased to come through a “difficult” test at Ewood Park with three points.

Lampard admitted that his side were not at their best in the opening 30 minutes as Oliver Dovin made a couple of important saves.

But the former Chelsea and Everton chief was delighted with the defensive effort to see the game out after quickfire goals from Ellis Simms and Brandon Thomas-Asante either side of half time.

“It was a difficult game, and it was always going to be,” Lampard told the club channels. “They are fifth in the league for a reason.

“It was a difficult first half and we were not at our best, for sure, but we get a goal. I think we deserved a moment like that because sometimes we haven’t got what we have deserved in games.

“We took the opportunity and we are one up at half time. Then, we get a second goal after the break which is a really good goal, and we had other chances as well.

“Then we do some of the difficult stuff, dig in and defend well, see out the game. I thought we saw it out really well, the substitutes had an impact. It was a good night and a good step forward.”

Coventry have now recorded back-to-back wins in the Championship and are up to 13th in the table.

“We didn’t play well in the first half hour, and we got into it later in the half, but we should be more confident to play,” the head coach added. “The players are better than what they showed in that period.

“We came through it and we get our goal, we get what we deserve in a way today. For some games, you think back to Norwich and those games, where we feel like things have gone against us but today we took our opportunities and we got something I think we deserved.

“It is step-by-step. We know we need to find consistency, something we have not found enough this season, so it is important we don’t get carried away.

“Our performances need to be good, keep battling and there is a good feeling in the group. We have to keep that no matter what comes round the corner.”
