Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has officially signed for PSV on loan for the remainder of the season, both clubs have confirmed on Tuesday evening.

PSV are understood to be willing to cover the full amount of Malacia's wages and the deal was finalised on Tuesday evening - after the UK deadline - because the Netherlands' winter window is open for an extra day.

The Manchester Evening News revealed on Monday that United were set to include an option to make the loan permanent, which has seen Malacia return to the Netherlands.

Malacia had previously agreed to join Benfica, but talks between the two clubs failed to reach an agreement, with the option to buy figure at the end of the season said to be a major stumbling block.

An Italian side also pulled out of talks to sign Malacia earlier in the window, but the Dutchman's move to PSV has been signed off and he will look to string starts together for his new club.

Malacia was keen to find a temporary switch away to rebuild his form and fitness, having spent 18 months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury that required two rounds of surgery.

He has made eight appearances since returning to action in November, but in five of his six starts he has been taken off at half-time, which also happened against FCSB in Romania.

United signed Malacia for €15million (£12.9m) from Feyenoord in the summer of 2022. There has been a suggestion that United have negotiated a 30 per cent sell-on clause into the transfer.
