Why Newcastle United axe threat still looms despite victory over Nottingham Forest
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has dropped a big hint to his players about what he is looking for in this season's run-in.
Howe wielded the axe for the clash against Nottingham Forest and made three big changes with Martin Dubravka benched, Sandro Tonali rested from the start and also Kieran Trippier coming out of the team with Tino Livramento favoured at right-back.
Before the win over Forest, Howe had spoken about the need for "more bravery" and he used the word again when talking about Lewis Miley's performance in the seven-goal clash.

Howe said: "I thought he was excellent in that first half. I thought he showed all his qualities, his technical ability, his bravery to get on the ball, his tactical understanding. He scored a goal, which is great to see again at the Gallowgate End, great finish. He's got really big character on the pitch."
Yet Howe did not feel that the performance from any player, including the Stanley teenager, was perfect after the break. Howe added: "Again, he's another player that probably suffered with the team in the second half, so there will be a lot to take from that game for Lewie."
What happens next at Anfield in terms of selection will be interesting from Howe. Given the Magpies ended the game in shaky manner against Forest and could have arguably surrendered what looked an unassailable lead at one stage, Howe could think about further alterations.
Miley done himself no harm overall and impressed the backroom team sufficiently enough to be sent out for media duties after the game. But defensively there were clear issues and whether Howe considers changing keepers is up for debate in the eyes of some fans.
