Manchester City and PSG meet in the French capital next Wednesday in a fixture that is crucial for both clubs' seasons.

The clash at the Parc des Princes is the penultimate fixture in this campaign's new league phase. The competition was extended this season by UEFA meaning the Champions League's initial phase does not end until the final week of January.

Previously in the group stage format, clubs would have discovered their fates before the start of the new year. As such, this has created difficulties for clubs who have signed new players in the January transfer window.

Due to Champions League rules, clubs can only add players to their squad list at the beginning of the league phase and then again for the knockout phase. As such, PSG will not be able to call upon the services of their new signing from Napoli, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, next week.

The winger joined the Parisiens for £59m earlier this week but can only join his new team in the Champions League in the knockout phase, should they make it that far. PSG currently sit in the elimination zone a point behind City who desperately need a victory to fend off their own fears.

The Blues will end their campaign at home to Club Brugge on January 29. However, they will also be unable to register suspected new additions - Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov or Vitor Reis until the knockout stages.

Marmoush and Khusanov's involvement in the Europa League and Conference League qualifying respectively will not hinder their attempts to be registered for the Champions League when the knockout stages begin. UEFA rules dictate that a player cannot play in the same competition for more than one club during the course of a season.
