It was noticeable after Manchester United's FA Cup penalty shootout victory against Arsenal that Ruben Amorim did not stick around for the celebrations.

Amorim shook hands with Mikel Arteta and members of the Arsenal coach's backroom staff before heading down the Emirates Stadium tunnel. United players predictably lingered on the pitch to savour a gutsy triumph with ten men.

Members of Amorim's backroom staff followed the players onto the pitch as they mobbed Joshua Zirkzee and Altay Bayindir, the heroes of the shootout. The United players and staff then applauded the 7,956 away-dayers stretched across the Clock End.

Amorim was conspicuous by his absence. He has been very visible in defeat, clapping practically all four corners of Old Trafford. He also approached the away end after his first match in charge at Portman Road.

There is meaning in Amorim's decision to eschew supporters in victory. The United head coach wants the players and staff to take the acclaim from supporters and he does not want to be the centre of attention.

If United suffer a negative result, be it a defeat or a disappointing draw, Amorim tends to head out onto the pitch, front up and make himself the centre of attention and he wants to shoulder the responsibility.

Amorim strode onto the Emirates pitch after United lost 2-0 to Arsenal in the Premier League last month. The United players and staff stood motionless for nearly two minutes as the away end emptied after the listless Boxing Day loss to Wolves at Molineux at Amorim's behest.

Following United's encouraging 2-2 draw at Anfield, Amorim disappeared straight down the tunnel after acknowledging Arne Slot to signal his approval of the performance and result.
