FORMER Premier League defender Ashley Williams questioned Southampton's defending which led to Marcus Edwards' winning goal for Burnley on Saturday.

Former Spurs winger Edwards netted on his Clarets debut to see the Championship side through to the FA Cup fifth round despite Saints having the best chances at St Mary's.

Edwards capitalised on Southampton's misshaped line and only had to tap in from five yards out after being teed up by Hannibal.

Burnley were praised by Williams and former goalkeeper Rob Green on Match of the Day for their defensive style, while Saints were slammed.

Watching the winning goal back, former Wales captain Williams said: “Southampton were a complete contrast (to Burnley). You can see their back three are out of shape already.

“Now they are already too deep. They get the deflection and Marcus Edwards gets the goal in the end. It summed it up really.

“Burnley were hard to beat and in the end, Southampton’s defence let them down because they were wide open, again.”
