Wigan vs Manchester United LIVE!

A frantic weekend of FA Cup action drew to a close tonight as League One side Wigan were beaten by north-west neighbours Man United in the third round. A classic cupset was not really on the cards at the DW Stadium with United the better team despite multiple missed chances.

The draw for the fourth round of the FA Cup took place before kick-off and either Eastleigh or Newport will welcome the Red Devils later this month.

United had Andre Onana available in goal after delaying his flight to the Africa Cup of Nations with a strong team named by Ten Hag featuring Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford in attack. Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes netted the goals for a relatively comfortable 2-0 win.

Wigan vs Man Utd highlights

  • GOAL! Dalot opens scoring for United

  • GOAL! Fernandes rolls home penalty

  • FA Cup draw: Potential non-league trip awaits United

Man Utd march on

22:15 , Marc Mayo

A superb finish from outside the box and a late penalty sent Manchester United into the next round of the FA Cup, on a night when they squandered many far easier chances against third-tier Wigan.

Diogo Dalot opened the scoring midway through the first half with a silky effort from 20 yards out that punctured a series of misses by the visitors.

A quieter second period at DW Stadium was enough for the Red Devils to seal the win, after Bruno Fernandes rolled home a somewhat kind penalty.

Callum McManaman straight into Alejandro Garnacho, who is basically the Spanish-Argentine version of his former self, with a bit of afters following a late tackle.

Nostalgic stuff from the 32-year-old.

Wigan 0-2 Man Utd | 79 mins

Callum McManaman (remember him?) off the bench for Wigan along with Jonny Smith as Jordan Jones and Liam Shaw depart.

Wigan 0-2 Man Utd | 75 mins

Bruno Fernandes tries for 3-0, as the boos from the home fans continue, and Sam Tickle spills his powerful effort for a corner.

GGGOOOAAALLL!!! Wigan 0-2 Man Utd | Fernandes, 74'

21:46 , Marc Mayo

There was a tickle of contact on Bruno Fernandes which forced him to tumble, and there's no VAR for a second look.

A classic penalty won by the attacker rather than given away by the defender.

Bruno Fernandes grabs the ball to step up himself...

GOAL! Bottom corner.

Penalty Man Utd!

21:45 , Marc Mayo

Bruno Fernandes goes down after checking back on a shot and Anthony Taylor points to the spot!

Scott McTominay once again pops up in the box but is once again denied, a smart Charlie Hughes block spinning his effort off target.

21:34 , Marc Mayo

Smart stop by Sam Tickle to divert Kobbie Mainoo's attempt from 20 yards.

A good, low drive and Marcus Rashford soon wins a corner as United look for a second goal.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 57 mins

21:29 , Marc Mayo

Superb work by the Wigan defence to force Marcus Rashford into touch as he looks to probe from the left flank.

Liam Morrison will be happy with that, just as Rashford looks frustrated to let himself run out of space.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 48 mins

Marcus Rashford slashes a bouncing shot wide from range.

Fourth-round opponents named

21:16 , Marc Mayo

Before the game, the draw for the next round took place.

Eastleigh or Newport await the winner of this game.

And both could maybe not be blamed for cheering on Manchester United in the second half!

Highlights: Alejandro Garnacho rattles the bar

21:12 , Marc Mayo

Twice United have hit the crossbar so far and this was certainly the best of the misses, as it were.

Wigan need an extra spark

21:08 , Marc Mayo

Unless the Latics can do a better job of keeping a lid on United, they need to fly out the traps after the break.

There is a vulnerability to the away defence but it's only been exposed a couple of times.

It should be more than one for Man Utd

21:04 , Marc Mayo

Diogo Dalot's fine strike punctured a series of misses from the away team, with Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay both guilty in front of goal.

Marcus Rashford has looked sharp though and United look decent in pressing Wigan's possession.

Another goal surely kills this tie.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | Half-time!

21:01 , Marc Mayo

Just the one-goal lead for a Manchester United team which has generated chances at will against their League One opponents.

One added minute as Bruno Fernandes fires well off target.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 43 mins

OFF THE BAR!

For the second time tonight, United rattle the woodwork - this time with a superb hit by Alejandro Garnacho from range.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 39 mins

20:53 , Marc Mayo

Chance for Wigan to make the Red Devils pay as Stephen Humphrys' shot is closed down from a free-kick, earning them a corner.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 37 mins

20:52 , Marc Mayo

And again, Scott McTominay this time fails to flick home a chance in the six-yard box after Rasmus Hojlund holds up the ball well.

United may rue these misses?

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 36 mins

20:51 , Marc Mayo

MISS!

Oh dear... Marcus Rashford's shot is parried by the keeper straight to Rasmus Hojlund who somehow controls the ball wide from four yards out!

That HAD to go in.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 35 mins

20:50 , Marc Mayo

It's been a busy one for Sam Tickle in the Wigan goal so far and they'll be happy to have just a one-goal deficit at the break.

Meanwhile, over on social media, everyone is making the same joke...

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 33 mins

20:47 , Marc Mayo

Marcus Rashford goes close with a free-kick across goal.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 30 mins

20:45 , Marc Mayo

OFF THE BAR!

Rasmus Hojlund powers a header at a delicious Alejandro Garnacho cross and it pings the top of the woodwork as it goes over.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 29 mins

20:44 , Marc Mayo

A bit of a reply from Wigan now as Stephen Humphrys drills a shot from range, which reaches Martial Godo unmarked at the far-post - and his flick cannot turn it home!

Highlights: Diogo Dalot puts Man Utd ahead

20:43 , Marc Mayo

It's, simply put, a really nice finish from the full-back.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 27 mins

20:42 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

United motoring now as Rasmus Hojlund gets on the end of a slick Marcus Rashford through ball.

Sam Tickle is there to deny the Dane with his feet.

Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | 24 mins

20:40 , Marc Mayo

CLOSE!

Almost 2-0 as Marcus Rashford fires an effort at the far-post, which Sam Tickle spills at first...

It bounces back off the post and the grateful goalkeeper leaps on it with goalline technology sparing his blushes!

GGGOOOOAAALLL!!! Wigan 0-1 Man Utd | Dalot, 22'

20:38 , Marc Mayo

LOVELY FINISH!

Diogo Dalot punishes Wigan with the cleanest of hits after a tee up by Marcus Rashford.

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 20 mins

20:35 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Nice little battle forming between Marcus Rashford and Sean Clare, who was given a really rough night in a Carabao Cup trip to United with Charlton a year ago.

United bring it through Bruno Fernandes on the left flank and Scott McTominay pops up by the penalty spot... he skews it wide!

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 18 mins

20:33 , Marc Mayo

Spell of United corners ends with Sean Clare schooling Jonny Evans by the Wigan corner flag.

Excellent work by the Latics to play their way out of danger.

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 16 mins

20:32 , Marc Mayo

Handball prevents Jordan Jones from blocking Aaron Wan-Bissaka's pass to create a clear run into the United half.

A harsh one, you may say... but without it ricocheting off his chest onto his arm the chance certainly doesn't happen.

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 14 mins

20:30 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

Sam Tickle gets down low to match Marcus Rashford's effort on target! Good footwork from the winger to open the space on his right side.

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 12 mins

20:27 , Marc Mayo

Perfectly competent start from Wigan, they've knocked the ball around well enough to at least avoid giving it away near their own goal.

United not too worried by the Latics' possession in their own half yet, though.

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 9 mins

20:25 , Marc Mayo

Sean Clare is shown inside the United box and happily jaunts onwards, yet has the right-back's instinct when it comes to pulling the trigger - aka not very much.

Kobbie Mainoo back well to clear, and Alejandro Garnacho caught offside from the visitors' break.

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 7 mins

20:21 , Marc Mayo

Marcus Rashford with plenty of space down the left to run at the box but his ball in is cleared.

Wigan fans behind both goals tonight, the United faithful having been given a whole one side of the DW Stadium.

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 5 mins

20:19 , Marc Mayo

Now it's Jonny Evans leading the charge in reply from the away team.

Neat looking cross, headed out well.

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 4 mins

20:18 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

A bit too easy for the Latics to run it clear via Martial Godo, who slots a lovely cross in for Thelo Aasgaard...

He hits it low but Andre Onana makes a smart stop!

Wigan 0-0 Man Utd | 2 mins

20:17 , Marc Mayo

First minor look at an attack for Wigan but Diogo Dalot is back well to mop up.

Cracking noise here, United swallowing much of the early possession in response.

The visitors get the ball rolling as the smoke from the fireworks settles.

Shaun Maloney previews Wigan vs Man Utd on ITV

19:44 , Marc Mayo

"Our captain tonight, Charlie Hughes, and our goalkeeper Sam Tickle, if we have any chance tonight we'll need big moments from the defenders and goalkeepers.

"We have talent in attack, we're going to need it tonight.

"They have to have a belief they can win the game, I hope I have transmitted that. I understand the levels between us - if Manchester United turn up and play well it'll be extremely hard. But we'll have moments."

Who will these teams want in the draw?

19:41 , Marc Mayo

It's hard to pick a better draw for Wigan in round four than the one they already have tonight!

Of course, they will not be expecting to reach the next stage so a good draw will be a mere footnote should they win tonight.

For United, it's strictly business. Arsenal are so far the only big dog eliminated in round three, so avoiding the likes of Liverpool will probably be preferred as they chase silverware.

'No excuses' for Man Utd

19:37 , Marc Mayo

Roy Keane just telling ITV there can be "no excuses" for Manchester United tonight.

It's hard to argue, and the line-up shows the Red Devils mean business.

You sense an early goal will be massive for United here, particularly with space likely to be at a premium for Rasmus Hojlund and Co to stretch their legs into.

The warm-ups are just getting underway on the DW Stadium pitch...

Two changes for Wigan

19:27 , Marc Mayo

Thelo Aasgaard comes into the attack along with the fit-again Stephen Humphrys for the Latics.

A few names you may recognise on the bench, including former Premier League winger Callum McManaman and James 'son of Jamie' Carragher.

Strong line-up named by Man Utd

19:23 , Marc Mayo

Just two changes made by Erik ten Hag tonight as Rasmus Hojlund returns to lead the line and Scott McTominay gets the nod in midfield.

Antony and Christian Eriksen drop out of the squad completely with a very youthful bench named.

Shola Shoretire and Joe Hugill among the homegrown options United will have late in the game.

How Wigan line up tonight

19:19 , Marc Mayo

Wigan XI: Tickle; Clare, Hughes, Morrison, Sessegnon; Jones, Shaw, Adeeko; Godo, Humphrys, Aasgard

Subs: Amos, Kerr, Carragher, Robinson, McManaman, Smith, Lang, Magennis, Wyke

Right then, the line-ups are coming up in just a moment before we turn our full attention to the fourth-round draw.

Minnows left in the competition

19:01 , Marc Mayo

Maidstone are the only non-league club guaranteed to be in the next round of the FA Cup.

They are joined by Eastleigh in the hat tonight, but they face a replay against Newport first.

Not many lower-league teams are in the mix, in truth, with Wrexham and Bolton (who face a replay at home to Luton) looking out for their names later on.
