Kane searching for gold

Anyone who thought Mauricio Pochettino might be generous and hand Vincent Janssen a rare start on Thursday evening, clearly underestimated the willpower of a goal-thirsty Harry Kane in pursuit of another golden boot.

You try telling the England hitman that he’s on the bench, while Romelu Lukaku sits in realistic catching distance at the top of the scoring charts.

Sadly for Janssen, as it stands, the 22-year-old frontman is Cal Naughton to Kane’s Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights:

‘You know, I was thinking, though, one time, uh, it would be really awesome if, like, you could slingshot me in for a win.’

‘Yeah, but– Okay, but, if you won, how, how am I gonna win?’

Kane would be excused for feeding a similar logic to Pochettino, if he’d considered starting the young Dutchman ahead of him.

Four-star Harry

Few could argue with the decision. As if to openly reinforce the point that you don’t drop an in-form striker, the one-time Leicester loanee stormed ahead of Lukaku with a dizzying four-goal blitz against his former employers.

With a game to go, the Belgian remains on 24 with Kane now on 26.

As rain vomited from the heavens at the King Power, Harry’s groove just couldn’t be shaken. Even when Janssen came on, all he could do was watch in amazement while the net was slapped and inflated time and time again.

Once Spurs’ number 9 finally did push the ball over the line, after a neat exchange with Dele Alli, it was disallowed for offside.

Hueng-min Son added to his impressive haul for the season; that’s now Alli, Son and Kane all on 20+ goals, with Christian Eriksen pitching in with a further 12. The Dane has also recorded 20 assists, so we can forgive him for his relative shortcomings elsewhere.

A fun evening, that’s for sure.

Hull were relegated last weekend

Welcome to Hull

And so we face the final curtain. For the last time until August, this thrilling band of young stars take to the road.

Marco Silva’s relegated Hull are the hosts. Many casual observers were keen for the Portuguese coach to do the impossible and stop the Tigers from sliding back to the Championship this season. If only as an antidote for the parochial nonsense offered by some Sky Sports pundits upon his hiring. In the end, though, the rot proved irreversible.

It’s easy to forget the state Hull were in last summer. Steve Bruce quit less than three weeks before the opener with Leicester, and, like a departing tenant posting a ripe haddock behind the fridge, what Bruce left behind was a mess.

A squad lacking quality in practically every area imaginiable. A club so thin on assets that a transfer deadline day loan for Dieumerci Mbokani made up the total sum of their forward line.

Silva can’t be held entirely unaccountable, of course. It was mentioned before but losing to Sunderland should trigger automatic relegation, so he was lucky to have made it to last weekend. Not that he’ll be too bothered. A bigger job surely waits for him in the coming months.

For Spurs, well, it’s been a pleasure. Let’s finish off this remarkable season with a flourish.
