As Lewis Miley thundered the ball home to equalise against Bromley in the FA Cup, there was an urgency to get back to the centre circle to restart the game. When Anthony Gordon dispatched his second-half penalty to put Newcastle United ahead, there was rippled applause as the Magpies got their nose in front as expected.

However, when William Osula netted a third with fierce drive in front of the Leazes End, there was a very different feeling on and off the pitch. The striker, who has struggled for first-team opportunities so far this term, was finally off the mark in black and white.

As Osula wheeled away to the corner, his team-mates followed. Bruno Guimaraes leaped on his back, Anthony Gordon wasn't too far behind and Dan Burn, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall all raced down the touchline to celebrate as the striker made a 'heart' symbol towards his friends and family in attendance.

The response to Osula's fine strike looked mightily similar to when Joe Willock claimed credit for Newcastle's second goal in the cup win over Chelsea back in October. That time it was Osula stood on the touchline beaming with pride at his close pal's involvement in doubling the lead at St James' Park.

Osula is clearly a very popular character on Tyneside. He has developed a close relationship with Willock and Gordon among others and already looks at home and comfortable in his new surroundings just months into his new challenge.

Eddie Howe has often sought out these characters who can have a positive impact on his dressing room and while signing Osula was a risk given his relative inexperience and previous goal struggles, it is a move that slowly looks as though it is paying off for the north east outfit.

Osula will likely now return to deputising for Alexander Isak in the coming weeks but has shown he is learning behind the scenes after a fine showing when thrust into action from the start.

"It was a big moment for Will,” Howe said of Osula's goal. “Any striker wants to score when they go to a new club – they want to score early just to settle them down. He’s been waiting and waiting, and needing that goal really. It was a spectacular one when it came – what a strike from him. I’m delighted for him personally, he needed that."
