Willie Collum has issued a sincere apology to a former colleague after WhatsApp messages of the SFA referee chief mocking a former colleague were leaked online.

Collum sent messages into a group chat on WhatsApp named 'Referee Operations' - which also includes a number of other high profile officials in Scotland about former assistant Ross Haswell, who recently returned to action to officiate at the Masters Football Tournament in Aberdeen back in November. And leaked screenshots from the chat have now shown Collum making fun of Haswell's physical appearance. After a GIF of Haswell was shared, Collum replied with several laughing emojis and the message: "I’m shocked at the size of him."

Referee chief Collum himself has confirmed he has reached out to Haswell to offer his sincere apologies. Speaking to The Sun, he said: “I have spoken to Ross to apologise personally and while I fully understand how the comments could be perceived it was not my intention for them to come across as insensitive. I should have known better than to articulate my thoughts in that way and I reiterate my sincere and heartfelt apologies to Ross.”

Collum's bosses also say they have been made aware of the messages. An SFA spokesperson said: "We are aware of screenshots distributed to the media by a former employee of the Referee Operations department and have reminded staff of their responsibilities with regard to communication. William has contacted Ross personally to apologise but also to provide context."
