Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Rafael Nadal defeats Botic van de Zandschulp after Nick Kyrgios and Simona Halep wins

Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Rafael Nadal defeats Botic van de Zandschulp after Nick Kyrgios and Simona Halep wins

Second seed Rafael Nadal took another step forward in his bid for a rare calendar-year Grand Slam on Monday by booking his spot in the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a commanding 6-4 6-2 7-6(6) win against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp.

The All England Club, where the Spaniard has won two of his 22 majors, has been the least rewarding place for Nadal but he arrived this year having won the Australian and French Open titles back-to-back for the first time in his career.

A third Wimbledon title and first since 2010 on the manicured lawns and a U.S. Open triumph would see the Mallorcan claim the calendar slam -- a feat last achieved in 1969 by Australian great Rod Laver.

Nadal broke 21st-seeded Van de Zandschulp’s serve five times in the final Centre Court match on Monday, dominating the contest from start to finish to win in two hours 21 minutes.

Serving for the match at 5-3, the 36-year-old Spaniard was broken but then got the job done in the tiebreak. He wil face American 11th seed Taylor Fritz for a place in Friday’s semi-finals.

Dominant Rafael Nadal produces Wimbledon masterclass to reach quarter-finals

Monday 4 July 2022 21:26 , Michael Jones

In perhaps his most dominant display yet at Wimbledon this year, Rafael Nadal displayed more signs that he is peaking at the right time to further elevate what has been an astonishing 2022.

Novak Djokovic, who has already demoralised his opponents with consistently clean, ruthless tennis at these Championships, remains the man to beat. But the Spaniard continues to polish his game and close the gap, rediscovering an immaculate touch and judgement went bolting from the baseline in what is his first time back in SW19 for three years.

Naturally there was rust as Francisco Cerundolo and Ričardas Berankis each stole a set in the first two rounds, but if a more ruthless side to Nadal came out against Lorenzo Sonego, then Botic van de Zandschulp felt the full force on Centre Court over almost two and a half hours. Bludgeoned ground strokes, deadly-accurate passes and delicate volleys; it was all on display on Monday evening.

Nick Kyrgios storms into Wimbledon quarter-finals after five-set battle with Brandon Nakashima

Monday 4 July 2022 21:20 , Michael Jones

Subdued for so long, Nick Kyrgios finally found his spark to extend his rollercoaster ride at Wimbledon and lock up a place in the quarter-finals for just the second time. Kyrgios inspired a feverish ride two nights earlier, but this afternoon proved more of an attritional affair against Brandon Nakashima, lacking the spice of his rivalry with Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The curiosity and excitement that swirled around this fourth-round match instead centred over whether Kyrgios would produce the sublime, ludicrous or, preferably, a mixture of both. Already hit with fines totalling £11,560 this fortnight for spitting and swearing, the Australian maverick has proved a divisive figure. Part of the ‘Fantastic Four’ Australians, alongside Alex de Minaur, Jason Kubler and Ajla Tomljanovic, to reach the last 16 for the first time since 1999, the pantomime villain of SW19 lacked a dance partner to mirror Saturday’s theatrics.

Instead, he found the unassuming Nakashima, the youngest American to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon since Andy Roddick in 2003, who had already evidenced his intense focus and polished game in a victory over last year’s semi-finalist Denis Shapovalov in the second round.

Simona Halep produces vintage Wimbledon display to stun Paula Badosa

Monday 4 July 2022 21:17 , Michael Jones

Former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep shone on Centre Court to ease past fourth seed Spaniard Paula Badosa 6-1 6-2 and advance to the quarter-finals at SW19.

Her first match on Centre Court since beating Serena Williams in the 2019 final, the 16th seed was sensational.

With 17 winners and five breaks of serve against Badosa, the Romanian barely needed an hour to skip into the last eight.

“It was the place that I wanted to be today. I think I played a great match,” Halep said. “It’s always tough to play against her, she’s a great player.

“[I was] nervous before, but I enjoyed a lot to be back on Centre Court, in front of this beautiful crowd, always supporting me. It’s a pleasure to be back here.”

Reaction from Rafael Nadal

Monday 4 July 2022 21:15 , Michael Jones

Rafael Nadal gave his post-match reaction to Centre Court after his win and spoke about his victoy, facing Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals and the Centenary celebrations of Centre Court on Sunday.

“I think I continued in a positive way. Until the end where I played a bad game.” he said, “I played a good match against a difficult opponent and I wish him all the best.

“In a personal way, for me to be able to be in quarter-finals after three years it’s amazing for me so very, very happy.

“Every match is different. He [Fritz] is playing well and having a very good year including a first Masters 1000 title, against me by the way, but we will be in the quarter-final of Wimbledon, so what will I expect.

“Yesterday was a beautiful thing sharing court with legends of our sport. Centre Court for 100 years is something very special.”

What are we watching? Some incredible tennis that’s what. Van de Zandschulp’s confidence has returned and he’s belting the ball at Nadal but also mixing it with a couple of exceptional drop shots to get the 36-year-old moving around the court.

It may be a little too late but the Dutchman has come alive in these last two games. He’s back on parity in the third set.

Rafa’s in a hurry. He fires down a service game to love and moves within one game of the victory. That’s a demolition from the 22x grand slam champion.

Obscene. Two aces sent out wide bring Nadal 40-0 up in the next game but he’s caught on the baseline and Van de Zandschulp chips a drop shot to the opposite side of court and picks up a point.

It’s a good shot but it counts for nothing as Nadal targets the backhand in the next rally and wins the game with a drop shot of his own.

That’s just the response that Van de Zandschulp needed. Another fast game comes and goes as he holds to love and draws level in the third.

He needs to keep doing that. Hold his own serve and attack Nadal’s. It’s a lot easier said than done obviously.

The Spaniard takes it and quickly steps up to advantage.

Oh great shot! Another fine rally develops with Halep working Badosa over to the right. Badosa scoops a forehand back but Halep fizzes one down the line and brings the match back to deuce.

This is a big game. If Halep wins it could be game over for Badosa.

Simona Halep is just starting to make the odd mistake. She goes long and brings the game level at deuce. Badosa is fighting hard.

Badosa is planting herself just behind the baseline and adding a bit more top spin on the ball, forcing Halep to generate her own pace. Halep attempts an ambitious cross court forehand but it lands on the wrong side of the line and Badosa has a break point!

Paula Badosa takes her the game! It’s her first one since the opening game of the match and is a much needed halt to Halep’s momentum.

The crowd on Centre Court is backing her. They want to see a match develop here.

Oh my. What hitting from Simona Halep. Paula Badosa is forced into defensive play, looping and lobbing balls back across to Halep who sets herself each time and smashes her forehand back at the Spaniard.

It’s too much for Badosa who’s resilience comes to an end with a forehand into the net.

15-0 to Halep.

No she cant! A double fault brings Halep up to deuce and the pressure seems to land firmly on Paula Badosa.

Halep skillfully takes the next point before keeping the ball in play and forcing another error from Badosa who fires one into the net and loses the set.

Less than half and hour on court and Halep is one set up.

Better from Badosa!

She’s more accurate from the serve and has forced a couple of wayward strokes out of Simona Halep on her way to 40-15. Halep then latches onto a second serve and forces Badosa into stretching to make the return which ends up in the net.

Can the Spaniard hold serve?

Five in a row for Simona Halep. Paula Badosa has made 10 errors already in this match after only making 11 in her victory against Petra Kvitova.

Halep holds serve to love and is one game away from taking the first set.

They’ve been playing for 20 minutes.

Utterly dominant from Simona Halep who breaks to love!

Paula Badosa is really struggling with errors and Halep’s calm demeanour is allowing her to capitalise. Two breaks in the set for the former champion.

Halep gifts a couple of points to Badosa but fights back well. She’s helped by Badosa’s wayward accuracy and the Spaniard goes long twice from 30-30 to give the game to the Romanian.

Three in a row for Halep now.

Break for Halep! Incredible tennis from the 2019 champion who wins the next two points from behind the baseline. The game-winning point is wonderful back hand that she whips across court.

Badosa has come up to the net and can only watch as the ball passes her and bounces in play.

Break point saved! Simona Halep has the chance to break early but Paula Badosa steps onto the front foot and works Halep side-to-side.

It’s decent defensive play from Halep but she errs with a cross court forehand that finds the net.

These two met at the Madrid Open back a couple of months ago and Halep came through as the victor. That match was played on clay though and grass provides a different challenge.

Paula Badosa rolls her shoulder through a powerful backhand that she whips across court and draws level in the game.

15-15.

Badosa 1-1 Halep*

Nicely done from Halep. A decent serve puts her on the front foot in the rally and she pushes up to the net before blowing a backhand down the line to claim the point.

Badosa fails to return the next serve and Halep takes the game.

Two gentle opening rallies end with Paula Badosa taking the points. The Spaniard serves down the T-line and latches onto Halep’s return to work the ball to the back corner. Halep stretches to reach it but fires on into the net.

Badosa then serves out the game and moves into the lead.

The players are welcomed onto court and start going through their warm-ups. Halep has won 10 successive matches at SW19 since losing to Hsieh Su-wei in the third round in 2018.

She lifted the trophy in 2019 before the competition was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19. Halep then missed the 2021 version due to injury but she’s back and facing the opening serve.

Paula Badosa vs Simona Halep

Monday 4 July 2022 17:09 , Michael Jones

There’s another cracking match coming up - at least on paper.

2019 Wimbledon ladies champion Simona Halep is back on Centre Court and she’s taking on fourth seed Paula Badosa who’s flown up the rankings in the last couple of years.

Both are big hitters and it’ll be a battle to see which woman manages to come out on top.

Reaction from Nick Kyrgios

Monday 4 July 2022 17:06 , Michael Jones

“First I want to say hell of an effort from Brandon, he’s 20 years old and he’s going to do some special things that’s for sure.

“[It was] nowhere near my best performance, but I fought through, the crowd were amazing.

“I have played a lot of tennis in the last month and a half. His level didn’t drop. My five-set level is pretty good and I’ve been here before, done it before and that is what I was thinking about.

“I was really excited to play De Minaur to be honest, he’s been flying the Aussie flag for so long and he was two sets up when I came on court. I need a large glass of wine tonight for sure.

“I stepped out here amongst the greatest of all time and I beat Nadal [in 2014]. All these experiences that I’ve had got me over the line today.”
