Wimbledon 2023 LIVE! Latest reaction and results after Andy Murray and Cam Norrie win on day two
Wimbledon LIVE!
Day two at the All England Club should have been an action-packed one, but was largely disrupted by rain. That didn’t slow Andy Murray down though, as he returned to Centre Court and swept aside Ryan Peniston in that all-British clash, before Cameron Norrie joined him in the second round with a more hard-fought victory over Tomas Machac.
World number one Carlos Alcaraz certainly did his job, cruising to a straight-sets victory over Jeremy Chardy on Court One. 2022 finalist Ons Jabeur followed him with a routine win of her own against Magdalena Frech, while Elena Rybakina began her title defence with a battling win over Shelby Rogers and Aryna Sabalenka also breezed through.
British interest was earlier in the day was halted by the weather. Katie Boulter was serving to stay in the first set again Daria Saville, while wildcard George Loffhagen lost an opening tie-break to Holger Rune. Follow all the action LIVE below with Matt Verri!

Thanks for following!

Under the watchful eye of Roger Federer, Andy Murray showed he might just have a few more Wimbledon chapters yet to write.
In only his second all-British encounter in 15 years at SW19, he eased past Ryan Peniston 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 and into the second round.
The last time he faced a Brit at Wimbledon, he went on to win the title. That seems too fanciful with a metal hip and years spent trying to claw his way back to the top of a sport he briefly dominated.

Job done!

Game, set and match!
19:42 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 6-4 Machac
They trade forehand errors, before Norrie forces Machac wide and the attempt to lob the ball up lands long. 30-15.
Two match points! Machac guesses correctly as Norrie fires the forehand crosscourt, can’t make the pass though. He’s made to wait, nets a backhand and there goes one of the match points.
Takes the second! Return flies off the frame of Machac’s racket and Norrie has come through a real test.
Break for Norrie!
19:38 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 *5-4 Machac
Those saved break points looking even bigger now - Norrie has two of his own.
Machac saves the first with a big forehand down the line, but Norrie takes the second! Machac nets the volley.
Norrie will serve for the match!
Norrie saves break points
19:35 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 4-4* Machac
These two continue to throw themselves around - Machac at full stretch on the baseline and somehow makes the forehand. He’s got two break points here, would leave him serving for the set.
Norrie saves one, timely first serve. And he saves the second too - big fist pump. Deuce.
Another break point coming up, this is a huge game in the match. Norrie to the net, Machac reads it but gets cramped and can’t flick the ball back.
Big, big hold from Norrie. Level in the fourth.
19:28 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 *3-4 Machac
Two big first serves get Machac up in the game, but the latest crosscourt winner from Norrie makes it 30-30.
And that’s not quite as clean, but still effective. Down the line, nice angle and Norrie has a break point... which he doesn’t take. Machac was very close to volleying that, realised at the last second it was sailing long.
Norrie will have a second chance, dropping the backhand at Machac’s toes. Again though the return is long. Back to deuce.
Machac holds, Norrie with more opportunities to make the pass but can’t pull it off this time.
Still on serve
19:22 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 3-3* Machac
Machac’s regular charge to the net is ensuring the crowd are getting plenty of entertainment. Another stunning pass down the line from Norrie, who is getting a shot at that pretty much every point.
Anything you can do... Machac responds with one of his own! Crosscourt this time, as Norrie tries to move up the court. Deuce.
A timely ace from Norrie, and he holds to level it up.
Machac hollds
19:18 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 *2-3 Machac
Big hold.
Serve and volley not required this time, as Machac thuds down an ace. Looks like he’s still struggling with cramp, been handed more salt to put in his water at the changeover.
19:16 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 2-2* Machac
Two break points for Norrie, chance for him to take a big step towards winning this match. Just over two hours played and it’s been anything but comfortable.
Deuce, Norrie unable to take either opportunity. Makes up the ground and the space is there for the pass down the line, too much on it though.
And that’s then brilliant from Machac. Coming to the net pretty much every point, does so well to get across and put the volley away. Superb response though! Norrie sees him coming again, this time produces the winner.
Break point! Serve and volley is predictable from Machac, Norrie able to really attack the return and it’s another great passing shot.
Deuce again though - Norrie loses his balance as he goes to run down a drop shot. Long, long game.
Back on serve!
19:06 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 *1-2 Machac
Court One rises to applause an outrageous volley from Machac, at full stretch and barely looking at the ball as he threw himself at it. Norrie also clapping that.
The Brit responds though, forehand winner as Machac loses his footing behind the baseline and it’s back on serve.
Norrie broken!
19:01 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 0-2* Machac
That’s a wild game from Norrie and he’s been punished.
Unforced error after unforced error, he has a moan to his box. Not sure they’re to blame for those few minutes.
Machac a break up in the fourth.
Machac up and running
18:57 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 *0-1 Machac
Machac looks to be over his troubles, judging by the soft hands at the net to drop the volley over.
He’s up again, this time just has to watch as Norrie slaps a backhand into the net and it’s a routine hold for Machac.
18:54 , Matt Verri
Machac looks to have been suffering from cramp - he’s been taking on some salt between sets.
We’ll see if that helps him, he’s serving first at the start of the fourth.
Norrie takes the third set!
18:49 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 6-1 Machac
A swift hold to love and Norrie has taken the third set. Machac barely moved a muscle in that final game.
He’s going to go off court between sets, Norrie one set away from victory now.
Double break for Norrie
18:47 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 *5-1 Machac
Tenth ace from Machac, might want to stick with pure power. Goes for a delicate drop shot and doesn’t clear the net - 30-30.
Break point Norrie! He watches the ball land just beyond the baseline, big change in the pattern of the match since Machac won that second set. All Norrie. That’s not his best though, goes for a deep backhand and it’s long. Deuce.
Second break point coming up, again Machac saves it. Norrie scrambles after the drop shot, but he can only flick it up and Machac can knock the ball into the empty court.
Third time lucky - in strange circumstances. Norrie a double break up, but Machac has dropped his racket and is holding his hand. Not sure what happened there.
Norrie looking strong
18:40 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 4-1* Machac
Norrie finding these service games a lot easier now. Forehand dominating points... backhand not too bad either as he hits a flat winner.
Big first serve seals a comfortable hold, he’s closing in on this third set.
On the march
18:34 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 3-0* Machac
As good as Norrie has looked all match. Getting the first serves in, and that’s setting up his forehand.
He breezes to a hold to love, and things are looking a lot more comfortable than they were 15 minutes ago.
Norrie secures early break
18:33 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 *2-0 Machac
Big fist pump from Norrie as he makes a brilliant pass - less positive reaction as he then slaps a forehand long.
Pressure being put on the Machac serve, unforced error from the qualifier and it’s deuce. Norrie pushing for the perfect start to the third set.
And it’s another superb crosscourt winner! Sprints after the volley, does well to even get there. Break poiont for the British number one.
Taken! Machac again to the net, can’t get the volley over and Norrie is in business in the third.
Over on Centre...
18:30 , Matt Verri
Udvardy *0-3 Sabalenka
Sabalenka has got her Wimbledon campaign up and running under the roof on Centre Court.
Fair to say things are going pretty smoothly for the second set, she’s a break up and well on her way to the opening set.
One set all on Court 1
18:24 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-6 Machac
Big return from Norrie, stepped in and attacked the second serve. Machac can’t get that back, 30-30. Huge couple of points coming up.
Set point! Norrie goes for the pass down the line, unable to get another whip on the forehand. Machac can’t take it though, tamely into the net. Deuce.
Ace brings up another set point for Machac, and he converts this one after a poor return from Norrie. It’s one set all!
Norrie saves set points
18:18 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 4-5* Machac
More like it from Norrie, has Machac chasing after the slice and then puts away the volley really nicely at the net. Follows it by almost swinging at thin air with the forehand, duly looks down to blame the grass.
Machac then leans into a huge backhand down the line. Deuce, he’s just a couple of points away from the set. Make that one point away. Another awful Norrie forehand, another look at the surface. Set point.
Norrie saves that one, but there’s more work to be done as he nets the smash. Again the Brit holds firm though. There’s the hold too, a couple of nice forehands ensure the grass does not need to be blamed.
18:13 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 *3-5 Machac
Neither player looking comfortable on serve here. There will still be chances for Norrie to get himself back level in this set.
He can only watch that 125mph serve though, just what Machac needed at 30-30. Another good serve is returned this time by Norrie, but the Brit then frames a forehand long.
Serving to stay in the set.
Machac a break up again!
18:10 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 3-4* Machac
Still all fairly sloppy from Norrie, who has some strapping around his left knee.
He’s also got two break points to deal with now, backhand winner from Machac and he has the chance to move ahead in this set again.
And he does! Norrie on the run, goes for the pass down the line but it’s slapped into the net.
Level again
18:07 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 *3-3 Machac
Here we go, forehand is out from Machac and Norrie has a break point.
And it’s one he takes! Machac goes for the serve and volley, but it comes at him fast and he can’t keep the ball in play.
Back on serve in the second.
Norrie stays in touch
18:03 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 2-3* Machac
Norrie gets things back on track, steadying the ship with a routine hold.
Plenty of expectation on the British number one, particularly after his run to the semi-finals last year. Will want to ease through this as quickly and as comfortably as possible - first task, get it back on serve.
Norrie broken
17:57 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 1-2* Machac
Well then...
Atfer a fairly routine first set, Norrie has been broken early in the second. That wasn’t quite in the plan.
The first break point Machac has had all match and he’s taken it!
Game, set and match!
17:52 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 6-0 6-1 Peniston
Peniston serving to extend the match for at least a few more minutes. He’s under pressure though, again the ball dropped perfectly at his feet by Murray.
And now two match points for Murray. The first set began in relatively tight fashion, but it’s been a stroll since then. First one goes, backhand dragged out.
Second is taken! Murray breezes into the second round, job well done on Centre Court.
Murray closing in...
17:47 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 6-0 5-1* Peniston
Murray dominating the longer rally, moves to the net well and puts away the volley. More big hitting with the forehand and he has a 40-0 lead in no time at all.
And there’s the hold to love. Murray a game away from victory.
Norrie takes the first set!
17:45 , Matt Verri
Norrie 6-3 Machac
Machac serving to stay in the first set over on Court 1... can’t do it!
Norrie breaks again to take the opener, confident start from the British number one.
Murray breaks again
17:43 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 6-0 *4-1 Peniston
Murray fairly agitated as he gives his box some thoughts. Not particularly positive ones.
Just a shake of his racket this time, as Peniston produces two very cheap unforced errors. 15-30, Murray with a chance to effectively wrap things up here.
Shot! Sensational crosscourt winner, Peniston doesn’t bother to move for that. Two break points for Murray. First one goes, as he slice fails to clear the net.
Takes the second though, Peniston long with the backhand. It’s a double break.
Peniston unable to break back
17:38 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 6-0 3-1* Peniston
Peniston has hit some lovely winners throughout the match, another backhand clips the outside of the line. Shame they’ve been swamped overall by the number of unforced errors.
Murray joins that particular party, slice floats out. Deuce, energy levels just starting to go up against from Peniston. Senses his moment.
And that moment has gone, Murray dropping the backhand at Peniston’s feet and he cannot lift it over the net. Murray holds.
Norrie gets the break
17:33 , Matt Verri
Norrie 4-2* Machac
It’s advantage Cam Norrie over on Court 1.
The British number secured the break and has consolidated it, he’s firmly in control of the first set against Machac. Going well for the home hopes at the moment...
Peniston on the board in the third
17:30 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 6-1 *2-1 Peniston
Another swift hold for Murray, who sets about securing yet another break of the Peniston serve.
Superb defence as ever, charging around the court and somehow getting it back in play with the 30th shot of the rally. The 31st is simple for Peniston though, into the empty court.
Return from Murray doesn’t clear the net, 40-0. A Peniston hold on the cards? That doesn’t help, double fault. Nor that, goes for the big forehand down the line but it’s long. 40-30. Make that deuce, Murray on top at the end of another gruelling rally.
Peniston holds though, a couple of very welcome Murray unforced errors from his perspective.
Norrie underway
17:23 , Matt Verri
Norrie *1-2 Machac
Cam Norrie is up and running on Court 1, as he gets his Wimbledon campaign up and running.
After wins for Carlos Alcaraz and Ons Jabeur, he’s the final match on that court today. Tomas Macach his opponent this evening.
Remains on serve in the very early stages.
Early break for Murray
17:21 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 6-0 *1-0 Peniston
This is a rout on Centre now. Murray with a big ‘come on’ to his box as he breaks in the first game of the third, he knows victory is fast approaching.
It’s been a long, long time since Peniston last won a game.
Murray one set away!
17:15 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 6-0 Peniston
Loose from Murray, forehand is long, but he makes up for it next point. The softest of hands to drop the ball over the net, Peniston does brilliantly to get there but can’t catch up with the lob that follows.
Return from Peniston tamely into the net, brings up a set point for Murray. Goes for a very cute drop shot, doesn’t make it. Deuce.
He’ll get a second chance though, unforced errors continue to flow from the Peniston racket.
And Murray takes this one! Two sets up now.
Another break!
17:08 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 *5-0 Peniston
Another wild Peniston forehand, another Murray break point.
And this one he takes! Brilliant angle on the forehand, backhand down the line from Peniston flies out. Murray to serve for the second set.
17:06 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 4-0* Peniston
Peniston wins the first point of the game - “You’ve got him now, Ryan” is the shout from the crowd. That man still believes.
Maybe not after Murray drops the ball perfectly over the net, Peniston unable to get there as he scrambles up the court. 30-30.
And now another break point. Really good hitting on the backhand from Peniston, but then sends the forehand into the net. Bagel very much on the cards.
Or not, Murray shanks a forehand miles into the air, spins out. And then he swings at thin air, as the Peniston second serve clipped the line. A couple of points to give everyone watching hope that they too could be a two-time Wimbledon champion.
Another break point coming up though, just too many unforced errors from Peniston. Saves it well, forehand delivers when he needs it. Back to deuce.
Murray marches on
16:58 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 4-0* Peniston
This is getting away from Peniston. Rapidly. 40-0 in less than a minute, Peniston unable to even get in a rally at the moment.
Murray thinks he’s held with a forehand winner, called out. Challenged but it was indeed out. That’s in though, lovely shot from Peniston down the line. 40-30. And now deuce, as Murray slaps a forehand into the net. Don’t call it a comeback...
No really, don’t. Ace from Murray is followed by a very fortunate net cord and that’s the hold.
Double break!
16:52 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 *3-0 Peniston
Murray reads the smash, gets there too and looks to have made the pass down the line, doesn’t quite clear the net though. Would have been some shot.
Again Peniston gifts a point to Murray, floating a slice long. He gets another couple of attempts at the smash, Muray happy to keep lobbing it up. Peniston fortunate the latest clips the top of the net and drops over. 30-30.
Break point for Murray! Super aggressive with the forehand, forcing the issue and he lets the ball go as he moves to the net, confident it is flying long.
Taken! There’s the double break, forehand punching through Peniston.
Murray consolidates break
16:47 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 2-0* Peniston
Puff of chalk tells you all you need to know about that serve from Murray. He’s increasingly taking control of the longer rallies too, unforced errors building from the Peniston racket.
Nothing he can do that with that serve either, easy hold for Murray. He’s on the charge on Centre.
Jabeur cruises through
16:45 , Matt Verri
Job done for last year’s runner-up. Ons Jabeur has eased to a straight-sets win in an hour and 18 minutes, seeing off Magdalena Frech with a 6-3 6-3 victory on Court One.
Next up under the roof will be British number one Cam Norrie...
Early break for Murray
16:44 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 *1-0 Peniston
Quick start to the second set from Murray. Comes out on top at the end of the long rally, 0-30 up on the Peniston serve.
And that’s turned into two break points, with a large helping hand from the net. Flicked off the top and nothing Peniston could do with that volley.
First one saved, but Murray takes the second! A set and a break up, in real control now.
First set Murray!
16:37 , Matt Verri
Murray 6-3 Peniston
Huge forehand winner from Peniston, perfect start to the game for him. Murray looks to match it, fairly wild though and it’s 0-30. Chance here for Peniston.
Good response though from Murray, serve gets him out of trouble and then a flat backhand gets him back to 30-30.
Set point - brilliant drop volley and Peniston gets nowhere near it. 45 minutes on the clock and Murray has his chance to take the opener.
Which he does! Return is long from Peniston and that seals it for Murray.
Peniston stays in it
16:33 , Matt Verri
Murray *5-3 Peniston
Double fault from Peniston, who having been firmly in this set is all of a sudden serving to stay in it.
That helps though, Murray backhand into the net, and Peniston seals the hold with a flat backhand crosscourt. Great shot.
Over to Murray to serve this set out...
Elsewhere at Wimbledon...
16:31 , Matt Verri
Still no play on the outside courts, rain has ruined the schedule today.
Court 1 is the only other place to watch tennis at Wimbledon at the moment - Ons Jabeur a set up and level in the second against Magdalena Frech.
Cam Norrie next on at the conclusion of that match.
One game away
16:29 , Matt Verri
Murray 5-2* Peniston
Chance now for Murray to quickly move through this set, after that fairly tricky start. Comes up to the net well, Peniston unable to make the pass. 30-0.
Great drop shot, big first serve and that’s a swift hold to love. Murray in charge.
Murray breaks!
16:27 , Matt Verri
Murray *4-2 Peniston
Murray’s backhand just about catches the line, skids on and Peniston sends his wide. 30-30 and the first small opening on the Peniston serve for Murray.
More than a small opening now, forehand down the line brings up a first break point of the match for Murray. He can’t take it though, bounces up and down in frustration after the unforced error. Deuce.
Second chance coming up, lob has Peniston scrambling back to the baseline and he sends the overhead into the bottom of the net.
“Let’s go” is the shout, as Murray watches the ball fly long. He has the break!
Another break point saved
16:21 , Matt Verri
Murray 3-2* Peniston
Murray’s turn to race through the first couple of points of the game, but he then gets a bit too cute with the drop shot and doesn’t clear the net. Net cord not in his favour the next point, dribbles back onto his side of the court. 30-30.
And now it’s break point, forehand down the line is wide. It’s the Murray serve coming under pressure in this match so far.
Again he saves it though, slice from Peniston is long. First ‘come on’ shout of the match from Murray... won’t be the last. Swiftly followed by the second and third, as Murray battles to an important hold.
Another break point saved
16:21 , Matt Verri
Murray 3-2* Peniston

16:20 , Matt Verri
Easy hold
16:14 , Matt Verri
Murray *2-2 Peniston
Too good, flat backhand down the line and Murray gives up on that fairly early. Peniston then has Murray scrambling around the court, unable to get the ball back on the stretch.
Smash at the net from Peniston and that’s a rapid hole to love.
Murray saves break point
16:10 , Matt Verri
Murray 2-1* Peniston
Big hitting from Peniston, best point of the match so far. Forehand a real weapon, Murray unable to get the slice in play. The two-time champion has already looked at the court a couple of times... don’t tell me we’re going to need the leaf-blowers again.
First opening on the Murray serve for Peniston, deep return forces the error. 30-30. And that’s a tame forehand into the net from Murray, break point. Equally tame from Peniston. Second serve to attack but the return is comfortably long. Deuce.
Murray struggling to get out of this game, but he’ll have another chance after putting away the smash at the net. And this time he does hold, as Peniston nets the backhand.
Comfortable hold
15:59 , Matt Verri
Murray *1-1 Peniston
Peniston keen to move up the court, Murray just long with the lob and then frames the attempt at a pass. 30-0.
Neither player yet to get going, Peniston again finds the net before Murray’s slice floats beyond the baseline. Good first serve sets up the put-away at the net, and that’s an opening hold for Peniston.
Murray up and running
15:56 , Matt Verri
Murray 1-0* Peniston
Lovely drop shot from Murray, but he follows it with a bit of a wild forehand. Unforced errors from both in the opening game.
The rain is absolutely hammering down at Wimbledon, very loud inside Centre Court as it bounces off the roof.
Another unforced error from Peniston and that’s a comfortable enough hold for Murray to kick things off.
15:50 , Matt Verri
Roger Federer has taken his seat in the royal box, to warm applause.
We are ready to get up and running on Centre. Murray to serve first at the start of the opening set.
Here we go!
15:44 , Matt Verri
Huge ovation as Murray and Peniston stroll out onto Centre Court.
Rain has stopped at Wimbledon, but the roof remains closed. Probably for the best after yesterday’s showing...
Big occasion for Rybakina...

Next up... Andy Murray!
15:34 , Matt Verri
Andy Murray and Ryan Peniston are next on Centre Court.
An all-British clash, with the winner facing Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem in the second round.
Thiem took the opening set of that one this morning, before the rain began to fall.
Game, set and match!
15:24 , Matt Verri
Rogers 6-4 1-6 6-2 Rybakina
Rybakina in a rush now, ace out wide followed by a Rogers forehand into the net and it’s three match points.
One will do! The defending champion lost the first set but she has marched through in the end - a big relief for her.
Rybakina to serve for the match
15:21 , Matt Verri
Rogers 6-4 1-6 *2-5 Rybakina
Unforced errors flowing from the Rogers racket now. Three break points for Rybakina, these almost feel like match points at this stage.
One down, two to go. Forehand from Rybakina sails beyond the baseline. And another one saved, big forehand from Rogers. Make that all three saved! Ace catches the line, with the help of a challenge. Deuce.
That’s wild though, swinging volley is long. Another break point for Rybakina coming up.
Double fault. Disastrous from Rogers, Rybakina a double break up and will serve for the match.
Finish line close
15:16 , Matt Verri
Rogers 6-4 1-6 *2-4 Rybakina
Rybakina’s serve has very much clicked into gear now. Rogers nets the backhand return and it’s another hold for the defending champion.
She’s just two games away from victory now - Murray and Peniston might want to get those warm-ups finished off.
What’s to come
15:13 , Matt Verri
On Court 1, Ons Jabeur is up next as she takes on Magdalena Frech, before British number one Cam Norrie gets his Wimbledon campaign up and running against Tomas Machac.
Once Rybakins vs Rogers is over, the focus shifts to the small matter of Andy Murray, in action against fellow Brit Ryan Peniston. Aryna Sabalenka then rounds off the day against Panna Udvardy.
Lots to enjoy!
Rybakina in charge
15:06 , Matt Verri
Rogers 6-4 1-6 1-2* Rybakina
Over on Centre, Rybakina has control of her match against Rogers. Really good fightback from the defending champion after dropping the first set.
She has an early break in the third, playing in front of a man who knows more than pretty much anyone about winning on that particular court...

Game, set and match!
15:01 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 7-5 Chardy
To say that return from Chardy came off the frame would be an understatement. Just as well the roof was closed, that would still be travelling. Wind has gone out of his sails now, 30-0 and Alcaraz is a couple of points away.
Ace. Three match points. Alcaraz sprinting to the finish line.
And there it is! Ace out wide and the world number one has cruised into the second round.
14:57 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 *6-5 Chardy
Trouble. Wayward toss from Chardy, he continues with the second serve anyway and Alcaraz is waiting. Punches the backhand winner into the empty court and that’s 0-30.
Make it 0-40 and three break points, Chardy falling apart all of a sudden. Not really the time for it...
Good first serve saves one of those break points, but that’s all it is. Forehand into the net and Alcaraz will serve for the match.
Third set in the balance
14:55 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 5-5* Chardy
Unfair really from Alcaraz. Thinks the ball is going long, waits for it to bounce and sees it land bang on the line. Quickly sets himself, and slaps a forehand winner down the line before Chardy can move.
Nice point from the Frenchman pulls it back to 40-30, he’s hanging in there. Or at least he was, return flies long and that’s a hold.
All the pressure back on the Chardy serve...
All level on Centre
14:51 , Matt Verri
Rogers 6-4 1-6 Rybakina
Serious display from Rybakina in that second set, and she needed it.
Raced into a 5-0 lead, and while Rogers at least prevented the bagel, the set was effectively done by that point.
They head to a decider!
14:50 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 *4-5 Chardy
This game is never going to end. Every time Chardy wins a point, he follows it with an awful one. A fifth deuce coming up after a particularly awful slice.
And it’s a hold this time! First serve finds the line and Alcaraz can only frame that out. Good effort this from Chardy.
14:47 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 4-4* Chardy
Dangerous territory for Chardy. One break here and the match could be over in just a few minutes. Forehand winner from Alcaraz makes it 30-30, he’s stepped up the intensity here.
And that is outrageous! On the run, full stretch and he’s somehow sent a stunning backhand winner crosscourt. Chardy applauding that, along with the rest of Court 1. Unable to take the break point though.
Chardy just about finds the line with the volley, but the drop shot from Alcaraz is then too good. Deuce for a third time. Big, big game.
Rybakina responds
14:38 , Matt Verri
Rogers 6-4 *0-3 Rybakina
She lost the first set, but Rybakina has responded really well and she’s made a flying start to the second.
The defending champion is a break up and on her way to sending that Centre Court clash to a decider. Andy Murray being made to wait...
14:36 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 *3-4 Chardy
That just seems to have annoyed Alcaraz. Perfect drop volley and it’s 0-30 in a matter of seconds.
But Chardy responds with two really good points, Alcaraz given the run around on the second and the Frenchman is there waiting at the net for a simple volley. 30-30.
Shot. Second serve, sits up to be hit and Alcaraz does just that. Clean winner and he has break point.
Chardy with a tame slice into the net, Alcaraz breaks and it’s immediately back on serve. Ruthless.
Chardy breaks!
14:33 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 2-4* Chardy
Has Chardy’s chance come and gone. Has to break here to at least have hope of taking this to a fourth set.
Maybe not. A third break point coming up, as Alcaraz chucks in a double fault. Again it’s saved! Alcaraz up to the net behind a forehand and Chardy can’t make the pass.
That’s superb though, lovely winner down the line. A fourth break point, this game has now lasted ten minutes. Whole of the first set wasn’t far off that.
And he takes it! Massive return, right on the baseline and Chardy is a break up. Wow.
Alcaraz saves break points
14:28 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 *2-3 Chardy
Alcaraz nets his attempt at a drop shot - 15-30 and this might be as close as Chardy has come to a break!
And now he has a break point, poor backhand from Alcaraz. The first one Chardy has had all match. And it lasts about a second, he stands motionless as the ace out wide flies past him. Deuce.
Chardy will have another chance though, Alcaraz can’t make the pass. Can’t take this one either, despite a very optimistic challenge.
Deuce for a third time - Alcaraz being made to work for this game.
Rogers take the opener!
14:22 , Matt Verri
Rogers 6-4 Rybakina
The defending champion has problems.
Rogers has moved a set up after just over 40 minutes on Centre Court, she’s looked really good.
Rybakina has been suffering with illness in recent weeks - is that still hampering her?
Chardy hanging on
14:16 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 2-2* Chardy
Chardy is at least keeping this third set competition... for now. The Alcaraz forehand is punching through the Frenchman’s defence at will though.
It’s another rapid hold - Chardy hasn’t been able to put any pressure on the Alcaraz serve all match. Not a single break point.
Over on Centre Court
14:10 , Matt Verri
Rogers *4-3 Rybakina
The defending champion Rybakina has got her Wimbledon campaign underway on Centre Court, and she’s in some early trouble.
Rogers has the break in the first set and is just a couple of games away from taking it.
The rain is absolutely pouring down now at Wimbledon - don’t expect any play on the outside courts soon.
A Chardy hold!
14:06 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 *0-1 Chardy
Chardy to serve first at the start of the third. More of the same though, as he sends a forehand tamely into the net. He’s about an inch from gifting Alcaraz another break point, but the smash just about clips the line.
The Spaniard unable to get the return back in play there, and Chardy does indeed have an early lead in the set.
Two sets up!
14:01 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 6-2 Chardy
First serve lands perfectly on the line, skids on and Chardy can do nothing about it. Sums things up. He thinks he’s done so again, but nobody knows what the call is. Both players seemingly want to challenge - it was out.
Some more brutal hitting from the Alcaraz forehand brings up three set points. One will do, lob flies long.
One set away from the second round, we’ve played 54 minutes.
Inevitable delayed...
13:57 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 *5-2 Chardy
So, just over 45 minutes played and Chardy is serving to stay in the second set. Tough old afternoon.
The Frenchman has fixed the double fault issue and isn’t really serving terribly - the problem is what’s coming back from the other side of the net. Lovely slice from Alcaraz and it’s 30-30, the Spaniard two points away from the set.
Chardy holds, as he watches the ball sail beyond the baseline.
Normal service resumed
13:50 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 *4-1 Chardy
A hold to love for Alcaraz means the pressure is swiftly back on the Chardy serve.
And pressure there is, as the Frenchman dumps two forehands halfway up the net. 15-30 and the warning lights have returned.
Two break points.... one will do. Stunning return from Alcaraz and he has the double break. Again.
Chardy up and running!
13:43 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 *2-1 Chardy
Right. Here we go with Chardy’s latest attempt to hold serve. Court 1 willing him on.
A couple of loose returns from Alcaraz, 30-15. This already might be the Frenchman’s best game of the match. And now the big serve out wide, 40-15.
He’s on the board! Forehand dispatched. Big smiles from his box, and from Chardy too.
The dominance continues
13:39 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 *1-0 Chardy
Here we go again. A break point for Alcaraz in the opening game of the second set, just getting on the board seems a challenge for Chardy. Forehand from Alcaraz flies long though, back to deuce.
There is the break though, at the third time of asking. This is brutal stuff.
First set in the bag!
13:32 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz 6-0 Chardy
Well that was ridiculously easy. Just over 20 minutes on the clock and Alcaraz has the first set won.
Seven double faults from Chardy in the opener, this is going to be over very swiftly if that doesn’t improve.
Chardy falling apart
13:26 , Matt Verri
Chardy 0-5* Alcaraz
Yet another double fault from Chardy, huge problems for the Frenchman at 0-30 down. Dear me, and another one! Three break points for Alcaraz, he really doesn’y need any gifts.
Well there’s another one. A third double fault in a row and Alcaraz will serve for a first-set bagel. We’ve not played 20 minutes yet.
Ruthless from Alcaraz
13:20 , Matt Verri
Chardy 0-3* Alcaraz
A forehand flies long from Alcaraz, giving Chardy the chance to win his first game. Can’t take it, another double fault. His fourth already, which is fairly disastrous.
Alcaraz is not letting him get out of this game, brilliant forehand winner crosscourt. Deuce for a second time.
And now a break point, that forehand from Alcaraz is proving far too good in the early stages. Taken! Slice from Chardy doesn’t reach the net and it’s a double break.
Rain update
13:13 , Matt Verri
It’s still here.
There will be no play on the outside courts before 2pm BST - could be a fair bit longer than that too considering the current conditions.
Will do well to get much more play away from Centre Court and Court 1 today.
Ominous start
13:11 , Matt Verri
Alcaraz *1-0 Chardy
Well that didn’t take long...
Doubles faults an issue for Chardy in his opening service game. A lovely forehand volley keeps him in it, but Alcaraz gets the break at the second time of asking.
Here we go!
13:05 , Matt Verri
It's go time!

Norrie eyes deep Wimbledon run
12:59 , Matt Verri
Cameron Norrie is hungry to replicate his run to the Wimbledon semi-finals from a year ago.
The 27-year-old made the last four 12 months ago, taking a first set off Novak Djokovic in their semi-final encounter before eventually being outplayed.
Norrie’s build-up has been a little indifferent this time around but he is confident of giving the British public something to cheer about.
“It was great to do that,” he said of last year, “but it’s made me hungrier and I want more and more.
“I didn’t gain from the rankings side of things at all [ranking points were annulled in response to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players]. But it felt good to get through to the second week.”
Not long now!
12:53 , Matt Verri
We will soon have some tennis, I promise.
No sign yet of play on the outside courts, covers still very much on as the rain continues to fall.
Carlos Alcaraz will be on Court 1 in just under ten minutes, as the world number gets his Wimbledon campaign up and running against Jeremy Chardy.
It’s not particularly warm...

Still to come
12:36 , Matt Verri
Rain has ruined things on the outside courts, but not long until the action gets up and running on Court 1 and Centre.
Defending champion Elena Rybakina is first up on Centre at 1:30pm, taking on American Shelby Rogers. After that, Andy Murray faces Ryan Peniston and Aryna Sabalenka goes up against Panna Udvardy.
On Court 1, it’s world number one Carlos Alcaraz kicking things off, Jeremy Chardy the man on the other side of the net. Ons Jabeur, runner-up a year ago, then faces Magdalena Frech, before Cam Norrie takes on Tomas Machac.
Round-up of the action...
12:25 , Matt Verri
So, umbrellas are up and covers are on. Time for a recap of what’s happened so far this morning.
Thiem took the opening set off Tsitsipas on Court 2 and it’s on serve in the second - reminder that the winner of that could face Andy Murray in the second round.
Berrettini is up against fellow Italian Sonego and has dropped the first set in a tie-break, while Ruud also needed a breaker to take the opener against British wildcard Loffhagen.
British number one Boulter is 6-5 down in her first set, serving to take it to a tie-break against Saville when they return.
Play interrupted
12:15 , Matt Verri
As we feared.
The rain has started to fall at Wimbledon and play has been brought to a swift halt across the outside courts.
No play on Court 1 until 1pm, so looks like we’ll be without tennis until then...
Rune edges ahead
12:09 , Matt Verri
Loffhagen 6-7 Rune
Big effort from Loffhagen to take it to a tie-break, but it’s Rune who has taken the first set in that match.
The British wildcard saved all six of the break points he faced... still wasn’t enough. The sixth seed has moved ahead.
Later today...
12:03 , Matt Verri
Panna Udvardy v Aryna Sabalenka
The last match of the day on Centre Court is a first chance to see Australian Open champion Sabalenka, who is among the favourites to win this year’s women’s singles title. Sabalenka was in the spotlight at the French Open for her nation Belarus’s support of the Ukrainian invasion.
A year on from Belarus and Russia players being banned from Wimbledon, the No2 seed may attract more attention.
Heather Watson v Barbora Krejcikova
That Russia ban had major consequences for Watson, with Wimbledon denied ranking points by the WTA Tour. Her run to the fourth round would have paved the way for her to automatically qualify for a host of other tournaments. She has a really tough opener against the No10 seed, who won the French Open title in 2021.
Still on serve...
11:54 , Matt Verri
Boulter 4-4* Saville
A relatively comfortable hold to 15 and Boulter levels the first set up once again.
They’ve played for 45 minutes so far and it’s still firmly in the balance, impossible to predict how this one will go.
Thiem a set up
11:47 , Matt Verri
Thiem 6-3 Tsitsipas
Dominic Thiem has flown out of the blocks on Court 2, taking the first set against fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Reminder that the winner of that one will face Andy Murray or Ryan Peniston in the second round...
Rain has arrived...
11:43 , Matt Verri
A couple of matches have been briefly paused as the rain starts to fall. Nothing too heavy, so players are staying out for now.
The forecast for today is not good at all, so it is almost inevitable that we will have a delay at some point.
Looks like we’re good to carry on for now though, play continuing.
