Wimbledon 2024 LIVE! Carlos Alcaraz vs Tommy Paul latest score and updates
Wimbledon 2024 LIVE!
Carlos Alcaraz continues his quest to retain his Wimbledon title with a match against Tommy Paul today. The Spanish youngster has had to dig deep to reach the quarter-finals having dropped sets to both Ugo Humbert and Frances Tiafoe earlier in the competition, with this clash against the 12th seed set to be another major test.
Despite his lofty seeding, this is the first time American Paul has reached the last eight of a slam and he made light work of veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in the last round but was pushed to five sets by the unknown Finn Otto Virtanen in round two.
This match is second up on Court One and the roof will be closed as rain continues to hit SW19. You can follow all the latest updates from Alcaraz vs Paul right here with Standard Sport and our live tennis blog brought to you direct from south-west London!

Prediction
GAME, SET AND MATCH ALCARAZ — 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2
18:55 , Dom Smith
An unsuccessful challenge by Paul moves Alcaraz 30-0 up, and three match points duly arrive at 40-0.
A missed first serve by the Spaniard, but then Paul goes long. That’s it. The defending champion is into the semi-final, where he will meet Daniil Medvedev.
Paul pushed him oh-so hard, but the American is out.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 5-2 Paul
18:51 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz misses just long to hand Paul the 30-0 advantage.
Alcaraz gets back to 30-30 but Paul is too strong on his forehand and keeps himself in Wimbledon with a hold of serve.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 5-1 Paul
18:48 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz, already 30-0 in front, ROCKETS a winner down the line at full force — Paul nowhere near it and no doubt fearing another Alcaraz service game has passed him by at 40-0 down.
It has.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 4-1 Paul
18:43 , Dom Smith
SMASHED cross-court winner from Alcaraz denies Paul from running away with his service game, instead pulling him back to 30-15. Then 30-30...
And then 30-40 as the Spaniard passes the ball past the well-advanced Paul. Break point!
It’s saved by Paul with a smash from Alcaraz’s high looper, but he earns another with an inspired winner down the line. BROKEN AGAIN.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 3-1 Paul
18:39 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz starts off his service game as he means to go on: with an ace.
A sensational winner from Paul as he’s almost into the crowd, he’s so far off court, but it doesn’t stop Alcaraz heading 40-15 in front.
Alcaraz serves out the game and cups his ears! “How’s about that?”, he asks the crowd. It was good. Very good.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 2-1 Paul
18:33 , Dom Smith
Paul hits a wild backhand straight into the tramlines for 0-30, but the a clench of the fists from the American as he watches Alcaraz’s return drop long.
At 15-40, Paul approaches the net and digs out a superb drop shot. He’s fighting for his life here.
But it proves to be in vain as Alcaraz breaks again...
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 1-1 Paul
18:28 , Dom Smith
Too much spin on Paul’s forehand makes it 40-0 Alcaraz on serve.
And the winner is just too good from Alcaraz. A very welcome hold to love.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 0-1 Paul
18:25 , Dom Smith
It’s onto deuce on Paul’s service game as he goes long, but the advantage is his as Alcaraz returns the favour.
He takes the game.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 Paul
18:16 , Dom Smith
Swiped wide by Paul for 15-0 Alcaraz, and then the cutest drop shot from Alcaraz for 30-0. He’s into his groove now.
At 40-0, a rare ace and Alcaraz has the third set wrapped up.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 5-2 Paul
18:12 , Dom Smith
Paul has Alcaraz sprinting all over the court but taps over the net for 30-15, and then takes an uncontrolled swipe at the ball which lands out for 30-30, and soon it’s 30-40 and break point.
SENSATIONAL winner by Alcaraz. Brave as you like. He’s got the double break now in this third set.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 4-2 Paul
18:09 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz forgoes two game points to take his service game to deuce under little pressure, then soon enough it’s break point for Paul.
Alcaraz saves three and eventually holds, but it’s not pretty. This match has just been so tight.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 3-2 Paul
17:57 , Dom Smith
Paul is left cursing at himself as another of his slapped forehands goes long for 0-30, and Alcaraz doubles down to then earn three break points.
Surely he can’t let all three pass him by? Oh he can.
But then a glorious lob earns him a fourth. Again he can’t capitalise.
Paul holds!
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 3-1 Paul
17:51
Alcaraz desperately needs to hold serve in order to stay ahead in this third set, and a big serve which Paul cannot return helps for 40-15.
Soon it’s game and Alcaraz moves 3-1 ahead in the second set. It’s not been a brilliant performance by him but he’s starting to turn the screw now.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 0-1 Paul
17:46 , Dom Smith
Horrendous miss by Paul with the American well advanced at the net and having all the time in the world to crack the ball into the court. Instead, he can only find the tramlines. And then he nets and concedes two break points at 15-40 down.
Alcaraz wastes the first but takes the second. WHAT IS THIS MATCH?
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 1-1 Paul
17:42 , Dom Smith
Hold on though. You can’t take anything for granted in this barmy match, as Alcaraz snags the tape and it’s 0-30 on his serve just like that!
Immediate break back from Paul. Blimey!
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 Paul
17:37 , Dom Smith
Paul is there to slap down a weak Alcaraz return and move to 40-30.
But in the blink of an eye it’s deuce and then break point Alcaraz. A thumping forehand down the line sees him take it. A break immediately.
Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4 Paul
17:31 , Dom Smith
Ace to begin with for Alcaraz, though Paul’s return is dangerously close to landing on the line.
At 40-0, three set points arrive for Alcaraz, who only needs one.
Alcaraz 5-7, 5-4 Paul
17:27 , Dom Smith
Amazing shot by Paul, who is really digging in here, to calve a winner round the net and into the corner, past Alcaraz darting the other way.
40-0 Paul.
40-15 Paul.
Game Paul.
Alcaraz 5-7, 5-3 Paul
17:24 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz takes the game and there’s a roar after the way he does so, winning a classic point in which at least three shots looked destined to be winners before Paul somehow returned them.
Finally he passes into the open court. A game away from levelling the match.
Alcaraz 5-7, 4-3 Paul
17:19 , Dom Smith
Brilliant from the defending champion, twisting into the corner to force a safe Paul return before slapping it down into the unguarded court.
That makes it 0-30, but Paul is back in business as Alcaraz nets.
But then break points for Alcaraz at 15-30, and he takes the second. Advantage Alcaraz now in the second set!
Alcaraz 5-7, 3-3 Paul
17:15 , Dom Smith
Stunning ace on the line from Alcaraz, with Paul absolutely nowhere near it. Both players, after being broken, now hold to love in strong shows of serving.
About time too.
This match could go on and on at this rate. Level pegging in the second.
Alcaraz 5-7, 2-3 Paul
17:12 , Dom Smith
Just long by Alcaraz for 30-0 Paul — the Spaniard gazing down at the turf in frustration, and Paul works to 40-0, dodging out the way of Alcaraz’s missed return to hold to love.
Important hold by the 13th seed.
Alcaraz 5-7, 2-2 Paul
17:10 , Dom Smith
Exceptional line winner on the backhand by Alcaraz moves him to 30-0 on serve. Then the return of serve is into the tape but not over from Paul.
Powerful ace gets Alcaraz over the line. He’s back level in this second set.
Alcaraz 5-7, 1-2 Paul
17:06 , Dom Smith
Hope immediately after disappointment for Alcaraz, at 0-30, and then 0-40 for three break points.
The first is saved with a neat net approach. The second is saved as Alcaraz backhands wide. But as Paul nets, Alcaraz knows he’s back in this second set.
Alcaraz 5-7, 0-2 Paul
17:02 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz still not right and allows Paul a glimmer at 15-30, and it proves much more of a glimmer.
Soon enough, it’s 15-40, and then Alcaraz is smashing wildly into the tramlines cross-court as Paul takes the first break of the second set. He’s in control at the mo...
Alcaraz 5-7, 0-1 Paul
17:00 , Dom Smith
Paul takes the first game of the second set, on serve, adding to the good work that saw him nick that first set with a break of Alcaraz’s serve in its 12th game.
Alcaraz 5-7 Paul
16:55 , Dom Smith
Paul knows that if he wins this game he’s won the first set, but it’s easier said than done to break Alcaraz.
HOWEVER, the 21-year-old fires beyond the baseline and offers up set point to Paul. Will he take it? He does! What a winner to seal it too!
Alcaraz 5-6 Paul
16:51 , Dom Smith
Paul, I’d say, has been the more reliable player on serve in this match so far and would no doubt be gutted if he doesn’t take this first set, but he throws away a 30-0 lead to allow Alcaraz to equalise here.
But Paul takes it. Game.
Alcaraz 5-5 Paul
16:47 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz puts away a lovely cross-court volley at the net, out of Paul’s reach, and moves to 40-30 on serve.
For once, it’s a simple route to the game from there.
Alcaraz 4-5 Paul
16:41 , Dom Smith
Into the tramlines by Alcaraz for 30-0 Paul on serve, yet the defending Wimbledon champion displays brute force to climb back to 30-15.
Almost every game is going to deuce at the moment, and this one is no exception.
Both players win finely worked points once there, Paul holds. Some of the tennis being played here is outstanding.
Alcaraz 4-4 Paul
16:35 , Dom Smith
Slightly better service game by Alcaraz this — but only slightly — as he works up to 40-30 and, from there, aces his way to another hold.
It’s 4-4 now.
Alcaraz 3-4 Paul
16:29 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz has an incredible ability to reach almost every shot, but even he can’t get to that winner from Paul, who moves to 15-0.
SUPER point by Alcaraz to force Paul into the forehand mistake and claim a break point, but the tramlines are there to deny the Spaniard.
Game Paul.
Alcaraz 3-3 Paul
16:24 , Dom Smith
Something is not quite right for Alcaraz at the moment. He approaches at the net but goes long, for 15-30 Paul, but is then lucky as the No12 seed can’t keep it in court and it’s 30-30.
Then a wild slash of things by Alcaraz on the backhand which is not even close to the court. Break point!
Saved as Paul winds up a two-handed backhand but it goes wide.
Paul is pushing, with another break point. Paul slips, Alcaraz drop-shots, deuce again.
Frustration from Alcaraz as he serves up another break point by firing long, but the Spaniard slaps a two-handed backhand winner down the line to bring this long game back to deuce.
Alcaraz then wastes four game points. It’s getting ridiculous how long this game is taking to win.
Seventh deuce.
Eighth deuce.
Ninth deuce.
EVENTUALLY, Alcaraz holds.
Alcaraz 2-3 Paul
16:05 , Dom Smith
Alcaraz nets and it looks like being a relatively easy hold of serve for his American opponent. Sure enough, Paul takes the decisive point and moved 3-2 ahead — no lead on serve but the momentum with him at the moment.
Alcaraz 2-2 Paul
16:02 , Dom Smith
Hang on a minute! Paul is soon clenching his fists in jubilation as Alcaraz hands him a 0-30 advantage.
Then Alcaraz comes to the net but can only watch as Paul pummels a winner down the line and past him. 0-40!
Alcaraz nets and Paul has taken it at the first opportunity. An immediate response.
Alcaraz 2-1 Paul
15:57 , Dom Smith
It’s trouble again for Paul as a net volley lands in the tramlines, offering up break point for Alcaraz. You know the rest... he doesn’t take it.
Paul goes long and it’s another break point. This time it IS taken. The first break is Alcaraz’s.
Alcaraz 1-1 Paul
15:53 , Dom Smith
Much more controlled by Alcaraz on serve than by Paul, as the Spaniard takes his first service game to love.
Alcaraz 0-1 Paul
15:49 , Dom Smith
Alacaraz pushes the ball into the far reaches of the court, prompting Paul to swing wildly long at 15-15, then Paul goes long again.
Winner by Alcaraz just evades Paul to set up two break points, but the first is saved well before Alcaraz wastes the second.
Excellent backhand smash hands Alcaraz a third break point. Again, not taken.
Then a fourth, with the Spaniard really pushing. Saved AGAIN!
Stunning precision from Paul wins him the game. WOW!
