Wimbledon 2024 LIVE: Tennis scores and updates as Novak Djokovic given walkover after De Minaur withdrawal

Novak Djokovic will face Lorenzo Musetti in the Wimbledon semi-finals after his quarter-final opponent, Alex de Minaur, withdrew due to injury.

De Minaur, the boyfriend of British No 1 Katie Boulter, sustained the issue at the end of his fourth-round victory over Arthur Fils on Monday. The ninth seed played down the scare despite an initial shake of the head in the direction of his box on Court One, but shortly after midday on the day of his scheduled Centre Court clash with Djokovic, De Minaur pulled out of the Championships.

"Obviously not an announcement I wanted to make by any means," De Minaur said. "Yeah, I'm devastated but had to pull out due to a hip injury. I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against Fils and got a scan yesterday. It confirmed this was the injury and with high risk of making it worse if I was to step on court.

Djokovic will play Musetti on Friday after the Italian reached his first grand slam semi-final with a five-set win over Taylor Fritz. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz faces Daniil Medvedev in the other men’s semi-final.

The women’s semi-finals are also set: the 2022 champion Elena Rybakina will face Barbora Krejcikova after thrashing Elina Svitolina in straight sets on Centre Court. Krejcikova, a former French Open champion, defeated Jelena Ostapenko, while the other semi-final will be between Jasmine Paolini and Donna Vekic, two first-time Wimbledon semi-finalists.

Who is playing at Wimbledon today? Full order of play and schedule

Wednesday 10 July 2024 23:21 , Jamie Braidwood

The Wimbledon semi-finals begin on Thursday with former champion Elena Rybakina looking a strong favourite to win the women’s singles title.

Rybakina, the champion two years ago, takes on former French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova on women’s semi-finals day on Centre Court, while Jasmine Paolini meets Donna Vekic in a meeting of two first-time Wimbledon semi-finalists.

Rybakina was in impressive form as she dismissed Elina Sviolina on Wednesday while Krejcikova also had a good win against the in-form Jelena Ostapenko. Krejcikova leads the head-to-head 2-0 against Rybakina but this will be their first clash on grass.

The other semi-final will produce an unexpected finalist as Paolini takes on Vekic. Paolini, who reached the French Open final last month, is the first Italian to play in the Wimbledon semi-finals while Vekic is through to her first grand slam final after 43 attempts.

The winners of the two semi-finals will contend for the Venus Rosewater Dish in Saturday’s final, starting at 2pm.

Jannik Sinner explains illness during Wimbledon quarter-final defeat

Wednesday 10 July 2024 22:01 , Kieran Jackson

Jannik Sinner has revealed he was experiencing dizziness out on court during his five-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The world No 1 was clearly under the weather from the start and, with the match at one set apiece, left the court at the start of the third set for more than 10 minutes.

A doctor checked his pulse and blood pressure and thought the Italian returned and continued to battle - forcing a deciding fifth set - Medvedev prevailed after four hours of action.

Alex de Minaur withdraws from Wimbledon prior to quarter-final against Novak Djokovic

Wednesday 10 July 2024 20:58 , Kieran Jackson

Alex de Minaur has pulled out of Wimbledon prior to his quarter-final against Novak Djokovic on Wednesday due to injury.

The Australian No 1, enjoying the best season of his career, sustained an injury on match point against Arthur Fils in his fourth-round match on Monday.

De Minaur’s persona immediately changed and despite playing down the hip injury in his press conference afterwards, his withdrawal was confirmed on Wednesday lunchtime.

Seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic therefore receives a walkover to Friday’s semi-finals, where he will play either Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti.

The high-risk style that makes reluctant Wimbledon favourite Elena Rybakina unbeatable

Wednesday 10 July 2024 19:58 , Kieran Jackson

The Elena Rybakina experience rarely lasts long. Which is not to say you don’t get value for money when watching the Kazakh star – quite the opposite. She’s a whirling dervish of entertainment.

It’s just that, especially on grass, she has no interest in engaging in long rallies, preferring a “no guts, no glory”, “blink-and-you’ll-miss-her” approach to most points which means the winner and unforced error counts both ratchet up pretty quickly. When she’s more hit than miss – as she was en route to the Wimbledon title in 2022 and appears to be again this year – it’s tough to work out how to stop her.

Elina Svitolina tried in this quarter-final, she really did, but her opponent’s point-ending flashes of racquet were generally finding the lines rather than the grass beyond. Combined with a ferocious serve that pumped down six aces to reach a tournament-high total of 31 and saw her win 84 per cent of points on first serve, the result was a ruthless 6-3, 6-2 win in just 61 minutes.

Meet Lorenzo Musetti, the humble Italian eyeing Wimbledon final after beating Taylor Fritz

Wednesday 10 July 2024 19:24 , Kieran Jackson

Prior to his first Grand Slam quarter-final against Taylor Fritz on Wednesday at Wimbledon, Lorenzo Musetti was asked about the important topics at hand: his tattoos. The 22-year-old has three. The first is a heart with a tennis racket in the middle, the second is a ship’s anchor with “family” written on it and the third is a phrase shared with his coach: “Il meglio deve ancora venire.”

It translates: the best is yet to come.

Well, Musetti has saved the best tennis of his fledgling career for the grass of the All England Club and, to be specific, in the fifth set of a three-and-a-half hour marathon against American favourite Fritz. After four sets of back and forth, momentum swings aplenty, Musetti wiped out Fritz 6-1 in the final set with a stunning array of old-school, grass-court tennis.

Musetti on playing Djokovic in the semi-finals:

“He probably knows the surface and the stadium better than me, for sure... I mean, jokes [aside], he’s a legend – everywhere, but especially here at Wimbledon.

“In the last years, [he’s done] something really unthinkable for anyone [here], and I’ve had the chance to play against him many times, so we know each other really well.

“They’ve always been huge fights, so I expect a big, big fight. I think it’s gonna be one of the toughest challenges on tour, but I’m an ambitious guy and I like to be challenged.”

Djokovic leads his head-to-head with Musetti 5-1. The pair have gone to five sets twice (at the French Open in 2021 and this year); Djokovic won both of those meetings.

Musetti, the 22-year-old Italian, speaking on court:

“I mean, I probably have no words. It’s tough to speak, but I’ll try my best. I think I [haven’t] realised yet what I’ve done.

“First of all, I want to say thanks to all the people, all the Italian crowd who’s here to support us.

“I think this victory... We were talking with my team, joking about trying to play on the big stage here at Wimbledon, because I never [got to] No 1 Court or Centre Court. So, to have the opportunity to walk on court in this really amazing stadium, it was really an honour for me.

“And I think I really played a fantastic match, because Taylor was really in great shape.

“Really, really happy to be in my first semi-final here, and I just want to say thanks to my team and all my fans who came from my hometown to support me.

“Probably I played my best tennis [in the final set], I kept the best for the end. Probably it was not the best start [before that], because Taylor was really leading the game, especially with the serve.”

How about this from Lorenzo Musetti! He wins the longest point of the match, a 23-point rally, with a beautiful forehand volley that dipepd onto the line. That was to get to 15-15.

From there, Fritz continued to make mistakes as Musetti closed it out. He’s looking so free out there. Can he keep it up now he’s a set away from the semi-finals?

And Musetti hooks a forehand wide! Fritz breaks to start the second set!

“The medics have come out. She looked in some distress half-a-minute or so ago.”

It’s hot out there today.

Now play will resume, as a pair of medics have escorted the lady in question out of the court.

Some powerful hitting from Fritz, but he goes in a bit too hard on one forehand! He pushes it long. 30-0.

30-15 as Musetti is sent into the corner, where he can only slice a forehand long.

The pair trade points, and we move to 40-30.

Eventually Fritz shovels a backhand long, and Musetti holds to stay in this set.

Now Fritz will serve for the first frame.

Frtiz’s impressive serving form continues, and he eases to 40-0.

But Musetti propels a forehand long, and Fritz holds. He’s one game away from taking the set.

Wimbledon 2024: Taylor Fritz* 4-2 Lorenzo Musetti

Wednesday 10 July 2024 15:43 , Alex Pattle

Effective serve-and-volleying from Musetti, and the Italian forces a backhand error out of Fritz. 15-0.

This time it’s the American who forces an error from Musetti, though, pushing back the underdog. 15-15.

Powerful body serve, 30-15. But we move to 30-30, as Musetti slices a weak backhand into the net.

Fritz brings up another break point, but he sends a forehand long after some lovely baseline hitting from Musetti. Deuce.

Another forehand from Fritz goes long after a decent drop shot from his opponent. Advantage Musetti.

And the Italian holds serve with some more impressive net play.

Terrific lob from Fritz! It arches beautifully over Musetti’s head and even swerves in the air. 0-15.

0-30 now as Musetti errs, but he narrows the gap with a lovely step-in forehand! It’s a winner that bounces right on the inside tramline. 30-30.

30-40, break point as Musetti tries to put away a forehand at the net but slaps it into the tape! It was a trickier shot than it appeared, but he’ll be kicking himself anyway.

And there’s the break, as Musetti slices into the net!

Wonderful backhand winner down the line now, as Musetti makes it 30-30!

Great defence from Musetti, as he returns a powerful forehand, a smash, and gets to a drop shot... but eventually he puts his own overhead in the net. 40-30.

And another strong serve from Fritz has Musetti returning into the net. There’s the hold.

Alex de Minaur withdraws from Wimbledon prior to quarter-final against Novak Djokovic

Wednesday 10 July 2024 12:36 , Luke Baker

More from De Minaur on his withdrawal

Wednesday 10 July 2024 12:32 , Luke Baker

Here’s what Alex de Minaur had to say about his withdrawal:

“Obviously not an announcement I wanted to make by any means. Yeah, I'm devastated but had to pull out due to a hip injury.

"I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against Fils and got a scan yesterday. It confirmed this was the injury and with high risk of making it worse if I was to step on court. It is no secret that at this stage of my career, it was the biggest match of my career.

"I knew the results yesterday but hoped I would wake up today and feel some sort of miracle.

"The problem with me going out and playing is one stretch, one slide, one anything can make this injury go from three to six weeks to four months."

Alex De Minaur happy to take role of Wimbledon’s honorary Briton

Wednesday 10 July 2024 12:15 , Luke Baker

Alex De Minaur is happy to be an honorary Briton for the rest of the tournament after reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time

The ninth seed from Australia beat Arthur Fils on Court One in the fourth round and had plenty of support from his box, which contained long-term girlfriend and British No 1 Katie Boulter.

De Minaur hopes that relationship means he will receive support from the crowd in SW19 after Emma Raducanu’s defeat on Sunday ended the home nation’s participation in the singles draw.

“Oh, 100 per cent. I’ll take all the support I can get. I can be the honorary Brit here at Wimbledon,” De Minaur said. “I do feel very loved out there, I must say. I always love coming here to Wimbledon and playing here. I always feel like I play some of my best tennis.

“Over the years I feel like the support I’ve had has grown significantly. It’s a great feeling as a player to know you’ve got a lot of people in that stadium backing you in, having your back when essentially you’re so far away from home.

“Yeah, definitely over the years I’ve learnt a lot more about the British culture thanks to Katie.”

Wimbledon 2024 commentators and presenters: BBC line-up including Nick Kyrgios, Clare Balding and John McEnroe

Wimbledon returns to our screens over the next fortnight after a thrilling tournament last year that culminated in Carlos Alcaraz defeating Novak Djokovic in an epic men’s final watched by an audience of over 15 million.

There was a significant change in the BBC’s coverage last year, as Clare Balding succeeded Sue Barker as the face of Wimbledon. Barker had been the BBC’s lead Wimbledon presenter for 30 years.

And there is a controversial addition to the coverage this year, with Nick Kyrgios, the Australian star and Wimbledon runner-up two years ago, joining the BBC to offer commentary while he remains sidelined by injury.

Wimbledon 2024 prize money: How much do players earn round-by-round?

Wednesday 10 July 2024 11:45 , Luke Baker

The winner of the men’s and women’s singles titles will take home a record £2.7m each, with the runner-ups earning £1.4m.

The prize money increases round-by-round, starting from £60,000 for reaching the first round - even if you don’t win.

This Wimbledon dark horse has ‘broken new ground’ – Novak Djokovic, beware

Wednesday 10 July 2024 11:30 , Luke Baker

It was almost cruel how Alex de Minaur repeatedly sent lob shots up and over Arthur Fils’ head to defuse the Frenchman’s explosive approach. This is new ground for the Australian: a first grand slam quarter-final.

One of the fastest players in the sport is gathering momentum. After four successive fourth-round matches in the sport’s most prestigious events, a run that confirmed the world No 9 was knocking on the door, Monday’s polished victory (6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3) suggests he might be ready to knock it clean off its hinges.

Ashleigh Barty triumphed in 2021, but it’s been 22 years since a male Australian has won the singles at SW19. Lleyton Hewitt, serving as a mentor to De Minaur, passionately lived through each point in the box, barking encouragement down below when the 25-year-old ventured over to his towel to wipe away sweat.

Hewitt will be bullish about De Minaur’s chances to go one better than Mark Philippoussis and Nick Kyrgios. If he can continue to marry his skill and “luck”, as he gleefully described it when handed a walkover in the last round following Lucas Pouille’s injury, then Novak Djokovic better watch out this afternoon.

Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti are the other contenders on his side of the draw, and while the Serb is a daunting opponent, he is evidently hobbled barely a few weeks since surgery on his right knee.

Carlos Alcaraz ‘didn’t feel comfortable’ on Court One during quarter-final win

Wednesday 10 July 2024 11:15 , Luke Baker

Carlos Alcaraz admitted to not feeling comfortable on Court One but was happy to win when not at his best after he roared back to down Tommy Paul and reach the Wimbledon semi-finals yesterday.

“I felt the difference playing on Centre Court and on Court One. The grass is different,” Alcaraz said. “Obviously I feel like it was more sand on Court One than Centre Court. I don’t want to say holes.

“There were more matches on Court One than Centre Court, I had to adapt my game on that. I didn’t feel comfortable at all playing on Court One with the conditions on it. As I said, I had to adapt my game on it. I tried to play my best tennis on it.

“Yeah, I think at the end I found it, I found my best tennis and my good tennis just to feel comfortable on it.”

Wimbledon 2024: An early start amid schedule chaos

The roofs on Centre Court and Court One have ensured both senior singles draws are on schedule but persistent rain means the other events are playing catch-up.

The mixed doubles final had already been pushed back from Thursday to Sunday before barely any play took place on the outside courts on Tuesday, leaving the doubles and juniors behind schedule while the wheelchair competitions have yet to start.

Wimbledon chief executive Sally Bolton said on Monday: “We’re confident we can still (get through the Championships) despite the continuing variability of the weather. We’ve got a range of contingencies. Going indoors is one of those options but that really would be a bit of a last resort.”

They are not at that stage yet, but today’s play on the outside courts began 30 minutes earlier at 10.30am.

Elina Svitolina prepared to shake hands with Elena Rybakina

Wednesday 10 July 2024 10:30 , Luke Baker

The first match on Centre Court today sees 2022 champion Elena Rybakina facing a major test against two-time semi-finalist Elina Svitolina.

Rybakina has won 18 of her 20 matches at the All England Club and is in a third successive Wimbledon quarter-final. She faces Ukraine’s Svitolina, a semi-finalist in 2019 who, after giving birth to her first child, reached the last four again as a wildcard last year.

The pair are 2-2 in career meetings, with Rybakina winning their French Open clash this year and their only previous match on grass at Eastbourne in 2021.

Svitolina refuses to shake hands with Russian and Belarusian players due to the ongoing war in her homeland but, despite Rybakina being born and raised in Moscow before switching to represent Kazakhstan six years ago, the 21st seed will have no problems doing so today.

“She changed her nationality, so it means she doesn’t want to represent her original country, so it works,” Svitolina said.

What time is Novak Djokovic playing at Wimbledon today against Alex de Minaur?

Wednesday 10 July 2024 10:01 , Luke Baker

at Wimbledon as the seven-time champion faces “honorary Brit” Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals today.

Djokovic’s reaction to the Wimbledon crowd was the biggest talking point of his straight-sets victory over Holger Rune on Monday night, with the 37-year-old warning the crowd: “You can’t touch me.”

It adds an edge to his match against the Australian De Minaur on Centre Court, with the ninth seed defeating Frenchman Arthur Fils in four sets in his last-16 match.

The 25-year-old looked to pick up an injury on match point, however, even as he played down fears afterwards. The boyfriend of British No 1 Katie Boulter, De Minaur is happy to fly the British flag at Wimbledon.

“Oh, 100%,” he said. “I’ll take all the support I can get. I can be the honorary Brit here at Wimbledon. I’ll take all the support I can get.”

Donna Vekic eclipses Lulu Sun to reach first Wimbledon semi-final

Wednesday 10 July 2024 09:30 , Luke Baker

An emotional Donna Vekic ended the fairytale Wimbledon run of qualifier Lulu Sun to reach her first grand slam semi-final yesterday.

SW19 sensation Sun won the first set and looked on course to become only the second woman to come through qualifying and reach the last four. But Vekic, the 28-year-old from Croatia, took a tight second set and then ran away with the third for a 5-7 6-4 6-1 victory.

Sun had lit up the All England Club with her fearless tennis, even though she knocked out home favourite Emma Raducanu in the previous round, but Vekic is a remarkable story in her own right as she reached her first grand slam semi-final at the 43rd attempt.

“It was a really tough match, she played unbelievable, I feel like she really pushed me to my limits,” said a tearful Vekic. “I felt like I was dying out there in the first two sets but I just kept going, hoping to have a chance and it came in the end. I have a full box of people there and I wouldn’t be here without them.”

Jasmine Paolini makes history for Italy with dominant quarter-final victory

Wednesday 10 July 2024 09:15 , Luke Baker

Jasmine Paolini kept the Italian flag flying at Wimbledon by thrashing Emma Navarro to reach the semi-finals.

Centre Court was still reeling from the defeat suffered by Italy’s poster boy and world number one Jannik Sinner, at the hands of Daniil Medvedev, when Paolini entered the fray.

The 28-year-old seventh seed duly dispatched American Navarro 6-2 6-1 to become the first Italian woman to make the last four in SW19.

“It’s amazing to get the win on this special court and I’m so happy to be in the semi-final,” she said. “It’s so special, a dream to be here in this position. I was watching finals on this court when I was a kid, it’s strange to be here.”

Before this year Paolini had never won a match on grass, or gone beyond the second round of a major tournament. But she was a surprise runner-up at the French Open last month and has proved that run was no flash in the pan by standing on the brink of a second final in a matter of weeks.

Jannik Sinner explains illness during Wimbledon quarter-final defeat

Wednesday 10 July 2024 09:00 , Luke Baker

Jannik Sinner has revealed he was experiencing dizziness out on court during his five-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarter-finals on Tuesday.

The world No 1 was clearly under the weather from the start and, with the match at one set apiece, left the court at the start of the third set for more than 10 minutes.

A doctor checked his pulse and blood pressure and thought the Italian returned and continued to battle - forcing a deciding fifth set - Medvedev prevailed after four hours of action.

Speaking in his press conference afterwards, the 22-year-old revealed how he was feeling out on court.
