Wimbledon draw LIVE: Latest updates as Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu learn fate
Andy Murray will play Tomas Machac in the first round of Wimbledon, should the two-time champion be fit enough to take part in what is expected to be his final Championships. Murray took his place in the singles draw despite admitting he may not be ready to compete after undergoing an operation on his spine.
Should Murray decide to play, he will face the 23-year-old Czech Machac for the third time this year. Machac, ranked 38 in the world, won both meetings, including an epic in Miami that was notable for Murray rupturing ankle ligaments late in the third set. Importantly for Murray, his match would be on Tuesday, which could give the 37-year-old an extra day to win his fitness race.
Emma Raducanu will play 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round as the former US Open champion returns to SW19 after missing last year due to injury. Katie Boulter, seeded for the first time, opens against Tatjana Maria and could play Harriet Dart in round two. Likewise, British No 1 Jack Draper opens against qualifier Elias Ymer and would face fellow Brit Cameron Norrie in round two if both men win.
Elsewhere, women’s No 1 Iga Swiatek and men’s No 1 Jannik Sinner are top seeds, with Marketa Vondrousova and Carlos Alcaraz the defending champions of the singles titles. Novak Djokovic is seeded second as the 37-year-old attempts to win Wimbledon for a record eighth time following a five-set defeat to Alcaraz in a thrilling men’s final last year.

Andy Murray given potential Wimbledon boost as draw reveals first-round opponent
Friday 28 June 2024 11:53 , Jamie Braidwood
Andy Murray has been given an extra day to recover for his final Wimbledon after learning that his opening match against Tomas Machac would not be until Tuesday.
Murray took his place in the singles draw despite admitting he may not be ready to compete after undergoing an operation on his spine, and was handed a first-round tie against the 23-year-old Machac, who is ranked 38 in the world.
Murray, 37, has lost twice to Machac this year, including in a final-set tiebreak at Miami where the former World No 1 suffered an ankle ligament injury that ruled him out for six weeks.
But as Murray landed on the bottom side of the draw, the news that the two-time Wimbledon champion will not play on Tuesday was a bonus to his chances of being fit enough to compete. With defending Carlos Alcaraz taking his place in the top half of the draw and opening play on Centre Court on Monday, the bottom half of the draw will follow on Tuesday.
Murray is prepared to wait until the last moment before making a decision on whether to play in the singles as he recovers from surgery on a spinal cyst, but a Tuesday start in the singles allows Murray more time to assess his condition. He has taken a wildcard alongside brother Jamie Murray for the doubles, which starts later in the first week.

Emma Raducanu handed tough opening draw ahead of Wimbledon return
Friday 28 June 2024 12:15 , Jamie Braidwood
Emma Raducanu’s first Wimbledon match for two years will be against Russian 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The former US Open champion missed last year’s tournament following surgery on both wrists and one ankle but has shown good form in the build-up.
It is quite a tough draw, though, with Alexandrova having reached the fourth round last year.
British number one Katie Boulter, seeded at the All England Club for the first time, opens her campaign against former semi-finalist Tatjana Maria and could play compatriot Harriet Dart in the second round, while fifth seed Jessica Pegula looms in round three.
Dart will play Chinese qualifier Bai Zhuoxuan, while Francesca Jones is likely to find world number one Iga Swiatek waiting if she can get past Croatian Petra Martic.

Novak Djokovic set for record Wimbledon bid
Friday 28 June 2024 14:45 , Jamie Braidwood
Novak Djokovic will get his bid for an eighth Wimbledon title underway against Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva.
It’s a favourable draw for Djokovic, who comes into Wimbledon having appeared to have recovered from knee surgery.
When asked about his chances this week, Djokovic said: “I didn’t come here to play a few rounds.
“If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I’ll play. If not, then I’ll give somebody else a chance to play.
“I really will only play if I know I am in a state which is good enough to go far in the tournament and fight for the title, so that’s the condition.
“Rehab is going in the right direction every single day, a few per cent better and better. That’s what’s giving me hope and encouragement to keep going.
“I’m taking things gradually. I’m not pushing myself yet 100 per cent but I’m hoping that’s going to come in the next few days.”
Iga Swiatek to face Sofia Kenin in opening round
Friday 28 June 2024 13:56 , Jamie Braidwood
Iga Swiatek will be in action on Tuesday, with the World No 1 facing Sofia Kenin in one of the picks of the opening round.
Swiatek faced Kenin in the French Open final in 2020, where the Polish player won her first grand slam title. Kenin is a former Australian Open champion, who has fallen down the rankings due to injury.
It’s a difficult draw for Swiatek, who arrives at Wimbledon having won her third French Open in a row but without ever showing the same dominance on grass.
Swiatek could face British player Fran Jones in round two, but things get tougher from there as defending champion Marketa Vondrousova and former winner Elena Rybakina are in her section.
Carlos Alcaraz to open play on Centre Court on Monday
Friday 28 June 2024 13:05 , Jamie Braidwood
Carlos Alcaraz will open play on Centre Court against qualifier Mark Lajal on Monday. The defending champion will be first up, as it tradition, and has landed in the same half of the draw as top seed Jannik Sinner.
Sinner could face former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in round two in what would be a sensational clash for the Italians.

It’s a similar story for Katie Boulter, who is also seeded at Wimbledon for the first time. She opens against Tatjana Maria and would play fellow Brit Harriet Dart in round two, if Dart beats qualifier Zhuoxuan Bai.

When is the Wimbledon draw?
Friday 28 June 2024 09:22 , Jamie Braidwood
The Wimbledon main draw will take place on Friday 28 June at 10pm BST, one day after the end of qualifying. It will be conducted at SW19. Fans can watch the men’s and women’s singles draws on wimbledon.com from 10am BST. You can also follow The Independent’s live blog which will have all the updates and key first-round ties.
How does Wimbledon determine the seeds?
The AELTC used to use a grass court seeding formula to determine the seeding for Wimbledon, however that was discontinued ahead of the Championships in 2021 and seedings now following the Tour rankings for both men’s and women’s singles draws.
Ons Jabeur ready for Wimbledon return despite heartbreak in back-to-back finals
Friday 28 June 2024 08:36 , Jack Rathborn
“I think it’s going to be a tough moment coming back, but also a nice moment,” Ons Jabeur told Sky Sports.
“The last time I walked off the court at Wimbledon, it was really sad and I was really crying, so I hope I don’t get those memories back
“But I’m really looking forward to playing at Wimbledon. It’s one of those places which is my own paradise.”
Elena Rybakina pleased with form ahead of Wimbledon
Friday 28 June 2024 08:24 , Jack Rathborn
With Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka having had little preparation on grass this season and injuries and illnesses wreaking havoc on the women’s tour, several players will be eyeing up Wimbledon as an opportunity for Grand Slam success.
Chief among the contenders is former champion Elena Rybakina, who has had a positive 2024, despite having to contend with illnesses throughout her campaign.
The big-serving Kazakh has won three titles in 2024 - Brisbane, Abu Dhabi and Stuttgart - and has recorded wins over top 10 players Swiatek, Sabalenka and Maria Sakkari.
“I’m really happy with the results this year,” Rybakina told reporters after her French Open quarter-final loss to eventual finalist Jasmine Paolini.
“I played so many matches. Also, good wins against top players. It’s a lot of ups and downs from my side, missing some events.
“I would like to play everything, but if the body is on the limit, I cannot do anything. For now I’m pretty happy.”
Aryna Sabalenka aims to make Wimbledon breakthrough
Friday 28 June 2024 08:12 , Jack Rathborn
World number three Aryna Sabalenka will look to put the disappointment of two Wimbledon semi-final finishes behind her as she launches yet another bid to conquer the final frontier and win the first grasscourt title of her career.
“We just don’t play enough time on grass so I don’t have enough time to win a title,” the Belarusian told reporters this month, speaking ahead of her first-round win over Daria Kasatkina in Berlin.
“It’s not like I feel bad, I’ve made some good results on the grass and I feel really good. I think grass actually suits my game really well.
“So it’s not about the surface, it’s about the month of tournaments, the amount of opportunities that I have on a grass court.”
Jannik Sinner becomes Italy’s first top seed at Wimbledon
Friday 28 June 2024 08:00 , Jack Rathborn
Millions of Italians, long known for their obsession with soccer, are about to find themselves torn between following their beloved Azzurri at Euro 2024 and tuning into Wimbledon to root for Jannik Sinner, Italy's first top seed in the tournament's history.
Sinner, who this month snatched the world number one ranking from Novak Djokovic, geared up perfectly for the challenge when he won his first grasscourt trophy at Halle in Germany last weekend.
Yet while the ginger-haired 22-year-old is grabbing most of the headlines, he is only the tip of the iceberg in a much broader Italian tennis renaissance, with a flourishing grass roots movement and seven men in the world's top 60.
That strength in depth is matched only by the United States, which has the same number of top-60 players, while France and Russia boast five and Argentina four.
The Italians on average are younger, however, ensuring a pool of talent for years to come. Of the nine Italian men in the top 100, six are between 20 and 23 years old.
The turnaround has been dramatic for a nation that has traditionally struggled to produce top tier performers. Until Sinner won this year's Australian Open no Italian man had lifted a Grand Slam trophy since Adriano Panatta in Paris in 1976.
In 2010, the country still had no men in the world's top 50 and only three in the top 100.
Wimbledon: Ten players to watch
Friday 28 June 2024 13:36 , Jamie Braidwood
Jack Draper
Tommy Paul edged out Draper in the quarter-finals at Queen’s, bringing to an end the best week of the 22-year-old’s career. The young British star claimed his first ATP Tour title in style in Stuttgart before earning his biggest win against Alcaraz on home soil. Just as encouragingly, he has stayed fit this year, and he will be seeded at a slam for the first time.
First round: Elias Ymer
Hannah Klugman, 15, misses out on Wimbledon main draw after qualifying defeat
Thursday 27 June 2024 17:54 , Jack Rathborn
One strikingly long row of makeshift grass tennis courts in the glistening surroundings of a south London public park. The £40m National Tennis Centre – with the luxury of year-round tennis courts – overlooking the scene, up the hill. Players on the periphery below the top-100 in the world slugging it out for one of 16 spots at The Championships next week. A serene environment, save for the agony and ecstasy of the players on court: welcome to the final day of Wimbledon qualifying.
It is a uniqueness to Wimbledon that qualifying does not take place at the site of the tournament, in order to save the grass courts wear and tear ahead of the fortnight. Instead, it takes place a few miles away in Roehampton at the aptly named ‘Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Centre’, formerly the Bank of England Sports Centre. Look closer and you’ll see the likes of David Goffin and Richard Gasquet – both former top-10 players – grinding it out over the final round.
But amid that grind, there is no room for pedigree and stature: both lost in four sets.

Andy Murray offers mixed update on Wimbledon plans after spinal surgery
Thursday 27 June 2024 17:54 , Jack Rathborn
Andy Murray remains hopeful of playing at Wimbledon but admits it is unlikely to be in singles.
The 37-year-old, who confirmed he is planning for the Olympics in Paris to be the final event of his career, had surgery on a spinal cyst on Saturday after experiencing weakness in his right leg during a second-round match against Jordan Thompson at Queen’s Club.
Murray called it a day after only five games and revealed he had no choice but to go under the knife.

When is the Wimbledon draw? Start time, confirmed seeds, wildcards and more
Thursday 27 June 2024 17:53 , Jack Rathborn
The Wimbledon draw takes place this week as Andy Murray awaits his first-round opponent amid uncertainty over whether the 37-year-old will be fit to appear at the Championships for what could be the final time.
Murray, should he be fit enough to enter the draw, and the returning Emma Raducanu, who missed Wimbledon last year due to injury, will be unseeded ahead of the Championships and could therefore face anyone in the field.
Britain’s Jack Draper will be hoping for a favourable draw after lifting his first grass-court title in Stuttgart and then beating Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s while Katie Boulter is also set to be seeded for the first time after defending her title in Nottingham.
