Wiveliscombe RFC firsts and seconds both celebrate victories
Wiveliscombe RFC's first and second teams both celebrated victories in their recent matches.
The first XV secured a 31-14 win over Kingsbridge at the Wiveliscombe Rec, maintaining their fifth place in the Western Counties West League.
It was the team's ninth league victory of the season.
Wiveliscombe set the tone early on, using their set scrums to force Kingsbridge into conceding regular penalties.
Despite Kingsbridge competing well in open play, Wiveliscombe had the upper hand by half-time.
Tries from winger Thomas Lally, centre Tom Pearce, winger Will Ruell, and flanker Sam Habberfield, along with four conversions by centre Will Thorne, gave Wiveliscombe a commanding lead.
Kingsbridge's first-half points came from a try by prop Henry Rich, converted by fly-half Sam Jones.
In the second half, Kingsbridge had more of the play, thanks to the slope advantage.
However, Wiveliscombe's defence held firm, and they managed to score another try through Pearce.
Vice-captain Dan Jarvis scored Kingsbridge's second-half points, with a try converted by Sam Jones.
The first XV hope to finish their season strongly after their latest victory, with five home fixtures in their remaining eight league games.
Meanwhile, Wiveliscombe's second XV also celebrated a victory, defeating Somerset neighbours Minehead 32-3.
The second team have been in excellent form, winning 10 of their 11 games this season.
Top team Martock are 14 points ahead of Wiveliscombe and have three games in hand.
The two teams will meet in March in what could be the league decider.
Wiveliscombe's second team scored five tries in their league victory, with Paul Gridley, Josh White, Tom Caughey, Torin Keyte, Elliott Deeks, and Stephen Briggs all crossing the line. Cameron Palk added one conversion.
The first XV will travel to Bude on Saturday, January 25, with no game scheduled for the second XV.
