Manchester United weren’t the only ones to benefit from Harry Maguire’s controversial late winner against Leicester City.

Ruben Amorim’s side were forced to come from a goal behind at Old Trafford as they booked their place in the FA Cup fifth round on Friday night. Bobby De Cordova-Reid had put Ruud van Nistelrooy's Foxes in front in the first half before Joshua Zirkzee levelled the tie for United.

The game was deadlocked and seemed set for extra time, but Maguire’s header in the 93rd minute sent the Red Devils through to the fifth round, where they'll host Fulham. United were fortunate, though, that VAR was not in use for the cup tie as Maguire was stood in an offside position – but the rules also saw one punter pocket a huge windfall.

One Ladbrokes customer had United to win and both teams to score as part of a five-fold accumulator. Their £100 stake looked lost before Bruno Fernandes floated his free-kick towards Maguire in injury time. The absence of VAR – which is introduced from the fifth round onwards – meant the lucky punter earned a staggering £82,911.14.

They had already survived an early scare. Their bet for Como vs Juventus to be level at half time and the visitors winning at full time was only settled by an injury-time equaliser before the break and an 89th-minute Randal Kolo Muani penalty to win the game for Juve.

Their bet slip also included Northampton Town beating Mansfield in League One, Rayo Vallecano winning against Real Valladolid after being level at the break, and Bayern Munich defeating Werder Bremen after being tied at half time.

"Lady Luck was smiling down – and then some – on one Ladbrokes customer on Friday night,” a Ladbrokes spokesperson said. “As if a first-half injury-time Como goal and a last-gasp Juve penalty weren't enough good fortune, a hugely controversial winner was the difference between an unlucky acca and a mouthwatering £83,000... Harry Maguire's Fan Club definitely has a new member!"

United’s comeback seemed unlikely following their dismal first-half display, in which they failed to register a shot on target. However, the FA Cup holders remain in the competition and will face Premier League Fulham – who United have beaten 1-0 twice this season already – at home for a place in the quarter-finals.

Maguire’s winning goal was the latest chapter in his redemption arc at United, having continued to establish himself as a key player under Amorim. "I have played pretty much every game when I have been available and I am looking forward to seeing where the future goes,” Maguire told MUTV. “I feel good, both mentally and physically.

"It is not just about me; it is more importantly about the team and winning football matches and trying to get this club back to where it should be. At the moment, we are not where we should be. Obviously tonight it's a good win to get through to the next round, and we look forward to it."
