I won three Royal Rumbles and fought Hulk Hogan - I know who is greatest wrestler ever
The WWE Royal Rumble is held for the 38th time this weekend when the event rolls into the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. It's one of the most long-standing fixtures in wrestling history.
It will be shown live on Netflix for the first time after WWE struck a deal with the streaming giant. Starting at 11pm UK time, 30 men and 30 women will battle it out until only one is left standing in the ring.
The 2025 men's Royal Rumble match is arguably among the most stacked in WWE history in terms of top-end talent. Many of the greatest WWE Superstars of all time will be part of the bout, including John Cena, CM Punk, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and a host of others like Drew McIntyre and Rey Mysterio, and will also feature an appearance by Logan Paul.

The event has become one of the most-watched, and keenly-contested, over the years. Stone Cold Steve Austin is the only person to win three Royal Rumbles. Having got the better of Bret Hart in 1997, he followed it up a year later by besting Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, to become only the third WWE star to win back-to-back Royal Rumbles. He then claimed his third and final Rumble in 2001.
A number of fighters have claimed two Rumble successes. Hulk Hogan (1990, 1991), Shawn Michaels, (1995, 1996), Triple H (2002, 2016), Brock Lesnar (2003, 2022), Batista (2005, 2014), John Cena (2008, 2013), Randy Orton (2009, 2017), Edge (2010, 2021), and Cody Rhodes (2023, 2024) have all got double successes, and Rhodes has the chance to become the first man to win three in a row when he steps into the ring on Saturday night.
Austin emerged as the dominant force in WWE during the late 1990s and early 200s, taking over the mantle from the likes of Hulk Hogan, Michaels and Undertaker to be considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Despite the intensity between the two of them, however, Hogan and Austin never faced off against each other in a one-on-one bout, with a planned showdown at Wrestlemania 18 cancelled. They did take part in the same tag team match, however, with Austin teaming with The Rock against Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash on Raw in 2002.
"Was there some legitimate heat [between Austin and I]? There was," claimed Hogan. "I never got to work with him, but Stone Cold always said, 'If there's money to be made, let's make it'."
Austin and Hogan are both considered by supporters as among the greatest wrestlers of all time. Certainly, the duo took the levels up with Hogan making millions for WWF in the 1980s as he almost transcended the sport, and Austin who helped change the face of WWE forever with his no-nonsense style.
However, both are in agreement over who should be considered the GOAT - Ric Flair.
Flair, now aged 75, had a 50-year career as a wrestler, spanning six decades and is officially recognised as a 16-time world champion. He won Royal Rumble in 1992 and claimed his last world title, the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, in 2000.
"Flair is the absolute greatest of all-time to ever lace-up a pair of boots and the greatest world champion of all-time," Austin told TMZ Sports. "Hulk Hogan was such a huge name in putting wrestling on the map and taking it to the heights that he did but Ric Flair is someone that I hold near and dear to me.
"Many people know Ric better than I do but we've become such good friends and I have such admiration for him. I've been down in the dumps too and I've had guys reach out to me and it's helped me when I've been in a bad time. Any kind of support that I can be there for Ric, I'm glad and proud to be his friend.
"I wish him nothing but the best. He's a very special human being. They broke the mold when they made that guy."
Hogan holds the same opinion as his old rival. Having competed against Flair on several occasions during both men's extraordinary careers, he says that Flair is his 'hero' despite some people claiming he is the No.1
“Well, you know, I will gracefully accept and acknowledge that compliment because it means so much, especially coming from my peers, to say that," said Hogan. "The guy who is my hero, and who I think is the greatest wrestler of all time, that’s Ric Flair.
"So I do appreciate the comment but I have a different opinion about who is the best wrestler and the greatest of all time, I have to go with Flair. It’s in his blood. He laid the groundwork. He raised the bar that no one has really been able to follow as far as work ethic.”
Flair will go down in history as perhaps the greatest wrestler of all time, due to a combination of in-ring skill, longevity and charisma But even he had to admit that there are more famous people to have emerged from the entertainment, recognising Hogan and Austin's impact.
He said: "I think Hulk is one of two or three guys that are the most famous people to ever be around, part of, or participate in the history of WWE. The others being, in my estimation, Steve Austin and The Undertaker. The three of them, I think, stand out more than anybody I can think of."
