Wontumi brings national title to Brighton to cap club's best year

Brighton and Hove amateur boxing club have their second national champion of the season in Kiarn Wontumi.

The super heavyweight won gold in the NAGBC Championships, where he boxed three times to win the title.

Wontumi boxed past three opponents en route to winning his first national title, all of which were previous national champions.

He is the second Wontumi to medal in the national championships with his brother Mattise cementing a bronze medal in the national championships earlier this year.

There was also success with Remy Martin picking up a silver medal in the finals after losing to a top opponent.

Ethan Clifford and Brad Karkar both picked up bronze medals in the same competition Francesca Skerritt represented the club in its first inclusion into the England Boxing Women’s Winter Boxing Cup in Leigh.

She put on a class performance in the semi-finals, winning unanimously and moved into the finals the next day where she was victorious bringing the gold back to Brighton.

Skerritt has had 14 bouts for Brighton ABC and won 12. Her amateur career continues to soar and the club look forward to seeing her bright future.

The club managed to have a record seven development Southern Counties champions this season, which is the best they have ever had.

On the pro side, Bridgerweight Tommy Welch received a rankings boost.

He moved up to 11th in the world at the 62nd WBC convention held in Hamburg.

Welch will be fighting in January, marking the first appearance of a busy 2025 schedule ahead of him.

The world ranked Bridgerweight will be hoping for titles in 2025, with a shot a world title looking promising for the end of the year.
