Worcester Wolves fight back from the brink to snatch victory
WORCESTER Wolves claimed their fourth win from five games as they fought to a razor-thin 78-74 victory.
Wolves claimed victory at Liverpool Basketball Club on Saturday (February 1) in NBL Division Two North action.
Wolves were trailing 74-68 with only a few minutes left but rallied to score 10 points without reply, snatching the win from Liverpool.
Coach Dean Blake, who could only field six players due to injuries and illness, was full of praise for his team.
Mr Blake said: "Liverpool really gave us a game today.
"We went down, but the biggest thing I stressed to the players was to stick together and keep communicating.
"A couple of plays went our way at the end – they threw the ball out of bounds, a ball went off someone’s foot, and we took advantage.
"The guys were disciplined, smart and worked for each other knowing they didn’t have to reach and foul because someone else would still be there to help them if they got beat.
"I can’t thank the players enough, I’m so happy for them."
The visitors started strong with Fin Rennie at the heart of the action, setting up James Davis for early points.
A Wilfrid Santhe shot put Worcester 20-15 ahead at the end of the first quarter.
Multiple lead changes thanks to heroics from veteran Max Jones along with a few others saw Liverpool start the last quarter 62-57 in front.
However, Wolves mounted a comeback with baskets from Davis and Rennie.
With only seconds remaining, Santhe made a dynamic dash to the hoop to give Worcester the lead.
Rennie ended the game with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Davis, battling illness, notched up 15 points and 16 rebounds.
Blake added: "Everyone gave their all today.
"I have to especially praise Jacob Dearman and Wilfrid Santhe – in games like this where they have to play the full forty minutes I have to give them the grace to make mistakes because they’re going to get tired.
"But they’re so experienced and so know what they’re doing that they make my job easy.
"I’m privileged to work with them."
Wolves are now seventh in the league and next face fourth-placed Derbyshire Arrows at the University of Worcester Arena on Saturday (February 8).
