World Cup winner names Liverpool's Ryan Gravenberch as joint-best midfielder in Premier League
Emmanuel Petit believes Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch is the best midfielder in the Premier League right now - although he does have to share the title with a Chelsea star.
Gravenberch has enjoyed a superb season since Arne Slot arrived as head coach at Anfield. Having struggled to make an impact in his first season under Jurgen Klopp after making the move from Bayern Munich, the 22-year-old has been given a new lease of life as the Reds’ No.6.
It’s a role he might not have been handed if Martin Zubimendi had completed a move to Anfield, but he has made the most of his opportunity and turned himself into an ever-present in the Premier League this season, having started every league game for Liverpool.

His performances have earned him plenty of plaudits, with World Cup winner Petit even going as far as crowning him the best in England at the moment - although he has to share the honor with Moises Caicedo.
"Well, I would probably say Gravenberch from Liverpool and Caicedo at Chelsea [are the best right now]," Petit told Casino Utan Spelpaus.
"Caicedo, from what happened since he joined Chelsea, this season he has been a rock in the midfield. He was a little bit tired recently, but from the start of the season, I think he has been amazing.
"Gravenberch changed his position as well. You can see that the confidence is completely different with [current Liverpool manager Arne] Slot than it was with [former Liverpool boss Jurgen] Klopp. I think he needed one year to settle perfectly into the first eleven.
"Also, Slot changed the way they played. They play with more composure; you know it’s not now in transition all the time. They control the ball more, in terms of position. So that suits him the most.
"You can see that he has become a very, very good player at Liverpool and is a crucial part of the midfield and the way that Slot wants to play."
Liverpool.com says: Liverpool fans might not be too thrilled to have Gravenberch being compared to Caicedo, considering he’s yet another player that turned down a move to Anfield. Still, we all knew the former Brighton man would probably come good at Stamford Bridge at some point.
For Gravenberch to be placed on the same level as Caicedo is therefore a signal of just how well he has done this season, especially when you consider most didn’t anticipate him becoming a No.6. It’s certainly helped to soften the blow of missing out on Zubimendi, even if he ends up going to Arsenal.
