World record bid expected at west Cumbria strongman show
A world record bid will be made when some of the strongest men in the world perform in west Cumbria this weekend.
The Cumbrian Pro Invitational will see under-105kg stars in action in a major strongman show.
And those behind Saturday’s show are predicting that the world deadlift record could come under serious threat at the event.
“The line-up is absolutely stacked, and we're hoping that the world deadlift record in the 105kg class is going to get broken,” sad organiser Dave Straughton.
“The world record is currently 420 kilos, and one of the lads, Chris Otero from America, has just done 414kg in training.
“I honestly think he’s going to break the world record here. That would be absolutely amazing.”
The professional strongman show will see top competitors from the UK as well as a host of other countries competing.
There will also be local interest with Workington’s Karl Gorman, Cumbria’s strongest man, competing.
Others on the card include Polish powerhouse Przemyslaw Marcewski, Czech Republic’s Vojtech Kucera and Latvia’s Maris Krievelis, plus a host of competitors from England and Wales.
They include Andrew Lumley, formerly the UK’s strongest man at U105kg, Scott McGowan, one-time England’s strongest man and Welsh champion Luke Williams.
They will show off their strength in disciplines such as the max deadlift, log press at 150kg, farmers walk at 140-160kg, 1,000lb yoke run and natural stone load up to 400lb.
Dave says the latest strongman show, which is held at CRL, Lillyhall, promises to be an event to remember.
“It's amazing that our little shows in Cumbria have got such a worldwide pull.
“People want to come and compete in our shows because they kook so good and the crowds are ahead of anywhere else – they’re bigger, noisier and really passionate.
“We'll have a big crowd again on Saturday night.”
Dave added that plenty of planning has gone into making the show a top-class event.
“We try and make it a strongman show – we don't just want it to be a strongman competition,” he added.
“A lot of them happen in car parks and things like that. I like to put mine in a proper venue, with a bar, and make a day of it. We try and make sure it looks good and visually appealing.
“We always have DJs and music. The set-up for this is going to be amazing. It's going to look like a pro strongman show.”
The doors open at 2pm and the first event starts at 3pm. Some tickets are still available – visit Cumbrian Strongman Promotions or Cumbrian Invitational U105 on Instagram.
