Newcastle United star Joelinton is a doubt for Wednesday night's clash with Arsenal after coming off with a knee injury against Fulham.

Howe confirmed that the ex-Hoffenheim man was suffering during the 2-1 defeat against the Cottagers and took action when taking Joelinton off on 64 minutes meaning the midfield enforcer is a doubt for the Carabao Cup decider. Pictures of Joelinton and his family emerged on Sunday with the 28-year-old's right leg in a brace.

With previous injuries, a brace has been used as a precaution but Howe and his medical team will be making a call on Joelinton's status later today. On Saturday night, Howe had said: "Joelinton was suffering with a knee injury. That was a shame, but he was clearly struggling in that second half."

Losing Joelinton will be a major blow for Newcastle with the South American missing just one game this season in the Premier League. That came when Joelinton reached the yellow card limit and sat out of the 4-0 victory at Ipswich Town in December.

Only on Friday, Howe hinted he may have to use Joelinton out wide after Miguel Almiron departed for Atlanta United last month. He said: "Joelinton has played wide for us this season, and that would be something to look at."

Howe turned to Joe Willock to replace Joelinton on Saturday afternoon and the ex-Arsenal man will be in contention for the cup clash at St James' Park while Lewis Miley and Sean Longstaff are also knocking on the door.
